3 Music Video Analyses
Coldplay – The Scientist When this music video starts it is an extreme close up of the singer with the band playing the music in the background. The singing is diagetic but the band instruments are non-diagetic. The singer is staring right into the camera that could portray that he is trying to make the song sound like it is being sung to someone behind the camera; possibly someone in the audience. This direct address to the audience creates a sense of involvement for the audience. As the birds eye camera zooms out it is evident that the artist is wearing a white long sleeve tee-shirt. White symbolises purity. Regarding this music video it could show that the artist wants the audience to realise that he believes in what he is singing and isn’t lying. This is also evident as he is lying on a blue mattress, blue also signifies truth. The artist is also wearing black trousers which symbolises death. In this video this doesn’t necessarily mean that the singer is dead or going to die, but the audience may find out the answer further into the music video. Finally the singer starts to move out of his original position and it is then apparent that the movement in the music video is reversed. The only thing that isn’t in reverse in the music video is the singer’s mouth singing the music. The video matches the music as it is talking about ‘going back to the start’ this is also being represented in the video. There is another example of going back to the start of something in the music video and this is evident in the basketball game. The players and the ball are all going back in time; again following the lyrics of the song. This music video is of the cinematic genre as it tells a story. This is evident as he is travelling back in time and this is shown by him walking backwards in many different scenes. To add to the cinematic genre, the light composition changes to dark to emphasis night-time. This again emphasises the passing of time throughout the video. This time passing effect is shown again by it turning for night time to day time. In terms of Sven E Carlsson’s theories this music video is a narrative clip as it is a short silence movie to a musical background. This is true to this music video as it is a short movie of a man who has been in a car crash and the artist has lip synced the lyrics into the narrative. The artist continues to walk backwards in the background of the shot. In the foreground of the same shot is a girl lying on the floor and appears to be dead. All of the clothes that she is wearing are black. This could refer back to the man’s clothes of him wearing black trousers, and could infer that he had something to do with her death. At the end of the video, the man gets back into a black car – also symbolising death and fades into a trace. The lyrics then stop and the video continue to play. Still in reverse it shows that the two people were in a car crash and the car has rolled down a big hill. When the two people are back in the car the women removes her jacket to reveal a pink tee-shirt. But in real life this would be the women putting on a black jacket. The black jacket could symbolise her later death that she will experience. YouTube Video Link
Plan B – She Said In the opening moments of the music video straight away the audience can clearly see that this video is going to have a cinematic genre and tell a short story. This is evident as the opening scene is a long shot of two people kissing in an elevator. This is unlike most music videos where the opening moments are of the band about to play the music. The next scene is of the band’s singer standing in a court room, the words that he used in the court room are the non diagetic sounds of the lyrics. As the singer is behind a glass screen, this shows that he is in the wrong; but his vision isn’t restricted by the screen. This could show that even though someone has done wrong, they can still see everything that is going on around them and they cannot hide. The colour of the singers tie is a mixture of red and orange. The colour red symbolise danger, war and love. Within this music video the danger is that he could be going to jail for his actions. The war within this music video could be better the accused and the judge and the jury. Finally, the love within this music video could be between the women in cream that sits in the viewing area of the court. At the same time as the music being played over the top non-diagetically the characters in the music video make gestures that correlate with the music. An example of this when they jury hits his hammer and when the jury are clicking their fingers and pens. All of these shots are close-ups to really emphasise the action and the sound happening at the same time. This technique could have been used to make the music sound like it could be within the film thereby making it diagetic. The flashbacks in the music video have brighter lights and colours and this could represent that things were better in the past and now have got worse. They emphasise these things have got worse by using harsher and darker lighting. Within the court room, the policeman that are guarding the singer are dancing to the music, but everyone else in the court room doesn’t seem fazed by this, this shows that within the music video it isn’t like normal life and everyone lives a more musical life. According to Sven Carlsson’s theory this makes the music video a televised bard and has a hint of electronic shaman as the music video is a little unrealistic. Overall, this music video seems normal when you watch it but after a small amount of analyse it is clear that the world portrayed in the music video is different of that of the normal world. This is evident in the video when the singer is standing in the court room singing the lyrics to the girl, but she can’t hear what he is saying. This makes the video unreal as in real life she would of be able to hear him singing. YouTube Video Link
Robbie Williams - Feel This whole of this music video is in black and white, this could represent that the artist, Robbie Williams is trying to portray opposites. The first viewing we get of the artist is a low shot looking up at the artist on top of a sandy hill. This low angle shot may well have been used to make Robbie Williams seem powerful. This symbolism of power is continued through into the next shot. The next shot is a mid shot and a dolly shot. The artist is staring into the camera with a stern face; this could also be portraying the artist’s power. The artist costume also resembles power as he is wearing a long black leather coat. As well as black symbolising power it also symbolises sexuality which is relevant to this music video. From the landscape shots and the dress sense of the artist is apparent that they are in the outback of America or somewhere else that is very rural. It is portrayed that the artist is the only person here for miles when he is sitting in the bath looking out to the horizon and there is no other human life or building. This shows a ‘care-free’ attitude of the artist and is shown by the artist bathing outside. This music video is different to others that I have analysed as all of the sound is non-diagetic and there is also no lip sync involved. This is unusual of a music video of this genre. Due to this I would say that according to Sven E Carlsson’s theories the performer is a commercial exhibitionist. This is where an artist is trying to sell themselves and make themselves look sexual. This is relevant to this music video as the artist torso is on show a lot and this will appeal to the female audience. Throughout the music video there are cuts to a woman who is riding a horse, standing at a fence and in a house. These cuts could emphasise that the artist is singing the song to her. As there are obvious cuts this could show that the artist is unaware of her presence and he is trying to find her. When it cuts back to the singer in the bath tub; he submerges his head under the water at the same time the lyrics says, ‘I scary myself to death.’ At this point in the music video the lyrics match the moving images as he could be scaring himself by going underwater and he could die as he could drown. The next shot is a low angle shot of the woman standing in the opening of a barn, immediately after this a high angle shot is shown of this singer. This emphasis the fact that the woman is looking down on the artist and that he is submissive to her. The horses in the music video have connotations themselves. Horses are powerful creatures which symbolise power, beauty and freedom. All three of these symbolisms are apparent in this music video. Horses also take a while to be tamed and this could be the same with the artist as it takes him a long time to end up in a relationship with the woman. As well as the sort of love story happening in this music video, there are cuts to people getting ready to train horses. They too are dressed in western outfits and fit into the environment well. This could be used in the music video so that it makes it feel more realistic. When the camera films both the man and the woman on horseback the man is coming from the left and side of the frame; and the woman is coming from the right. This could infer that as they keep on riding they are eventually going to meet each other. After the horseback scene, the man and the woman are seen to have met and the mood of the song changes. The singer and the woman now both smile in the next shots of them. This tells the audience that they have met. The passionate scene of them kissing in the back of the car infers that they have finally found each other and they are ‘Mr and Mrs Right’ when they are together. The extreme close ups of his hands going over her body emphasises that he really likes the woman and feels passionately about her. These camera angles makes the audience feel a part of their sexual lifestyles. The camera shots and angles makes the audience feel like they are present inside the car. The car implies that they don’t want the outside world to see what they are doing inside. The use of the bingo balls shows that they have travelled away from the rural area that they were in and have together. This is the first time either of the people have come out of their home surrounds. This could infer that the two people were meant for each other and have ‘come out of their shell’ because of it. Song: All Time LowArtist: The Wanted CONCEPTThe artist that we have chosen to produce a music video for is ‘The Wanted’. They are a new and upcoming band of 2010. We shall produce a music video of their debut single ‘All Time Low’. As well as a Digi Pack which will include a Magazine Advert for the artist and a CD Cover. As we cannot use the artist themselves, we shall use actors to represent the characters needed. LOCATIONSThe song is about a boyfriend (the singer) who comes home one day to find his girlfriend sleeping with another man. In the latter part of the music video there will be scenes of just the boyfriend singing in the middle of the field. As well as the short story that will go on within the music video, there is also going to be the band performing the song as though they were singing it live. In the opening moments of the music video there will be scenes of the band performing the song on a stage. The music video will start with an extreme close up a cello being played. The camera will then zoom out to a long shot with the rest of the band. The singer will be in the middle of the frame and the piano player will be to the right. The camera will then cut to different types of shots, there will be shots from all different angles and levels. As well as this there will be mid shots, close ups and extreme close ups of the artist. The camera will then cut to a different location of the singer standing in the middle of a field. The camera will shoot the singer from different angles and circle him. The artist will be singing with his arms out wide in some shots; as well as singing directly into the camera for others. The next scene will be outside of a house and there will be an extreme long shot showing the singer approaching the house from his car and opening the front door. The front door will then be opened and shoots from both inside and outside of the house will be filmed. As the singer opens the front door he will see that there are clothes scattered all over the floor. His face will look angry but also concerned. Following this scene will be of two people making love in bed underneath the covers. The bedroom scene will be filmed with a long shot from the end of the bed. Another cut will bring the camera back to the artist who sees that there has been activity in the lounge but there is no one present. He then turns to run upstairs as he thinks of the worst. The camera then goes back to filming the people in bed who are too busy to hear the artist running up the stairs. To build suspense, the story will be left on a cliff hanger and there will be a cut back to the band playing on the stage. Again there will be different shot compositions of the band singing on the stage so as the video keeps a fast pace. It will then cut back to the artist about to open the door on his girlfriend in bed. As he goes to open the door, the two people are startled and the camera switched to them in bed. The camera switches to a mid-shot or close up of the boyfriends face and he is stunned. The man then jumps out of the bed and tried to get dressed and run out the door, but the boyfriend is standing in the way and punches him to the floor when the man tries to run out. The camera turns back to the girlfriend on the bed who then jumps up to the injured man on the floor. The boyfriend then turns around and runs back down the stairs out of the house, up an alley way and continues running until he reaches the field again. The camera films the singer in the field again singing into his hands to show that he is damaged and hurt by what he has just seen. When there is a jolt in the music stopping, the singer falls to the floor at the same time. The camera switches back to the band performing on the stage. The whole time in these shots the singer is staring directly into the camera. There will be a number of different angles and shot compositions here to make it interesting. Finally the camera cuts to the singer lying down in the field on his side. The camera will be in the position of where he is and will be singing on the girlfriend who is happy. Immediately after a long shot will show to the audience that the singer is singing alone and his girlfriend is not lying behind him. The singer has imagined the girlfriend lying next to him. The music video ends with the band performing in the tithe barn and the lights will fade to darkness. COLOUR/TONE The music video will be in colour to make the audience feel like the music video is realistic. The CD Cover and Magazine Advert will have the same colour scheme for continuity; the colours chosen will also have connotations and symbolism attached to them. LOCATIONS There will be several locations for this music video. The band will be performing in the Tithe Barn which is at our College. The Tithe Barn will be dark when shooting to emphasis loneliness and emptiness. Another location will be a field. This location is key to this music video as the openness symbolises the singer feels alone. The green grass will also symbolise the ‘green-eyed monster’ and envy that the singer has over the new man. These are the two main locations. As well as these locations, the music video will also feature the outside, hall way and lounge of a house. The intimate scene will be filmed in the bedroom as this is a conventional place for intimacy to happen. The other location will be an alley way in Marlow, the alley will symbolise the loneliness that the singer will behold now that he doesn’t have a girlfriend.
THE ARTIST/STYLE AND FORM The look that we want to singer (Tom) to have is an indie rugged look. We want him to look sexually so as he will appeal to our target audience. We can portray the artist in this way with his clothing and accessories. Our music video is going to be an illustration music video. This means that it will have straightforward performances within the music video as well as a short simple narrative. The music video will have both parts of an illustration music video so that the audience feel connected with the song. There will be links between the lyrics and the visuals as well as the music and the visuals. We are going to do this as it is a convention of other music videos on the market. Some other conventions of music videos that we are going to follow are: The artist will be shown performing – In our music video it will be of the band in the barn scenes. The lyrics of the song relate to the video – In our music video this will be done when the artist is in the field singing and is depressed and upset. The pace of the editing fits the pace of the music – In our music video we will make sure that the editing fits the pace and tempo of the music Regarding the CD Cover and the Magazine Advert we shall portray the artist in a positive and forcefully way. This will be done as having his face as the main focus on both of the mediums. We are going to do this as this is a new artist/band and we want to get the target audience to recognise the artist. The CD Cover will have links to the album name which we have called ‘Backwards’ in the album cover this may be inferred with a image of the artists back but have a mirror on the wall with the artist face in it. This will then link the image to the text. MISE-EN-SCENE Artist/Band Costume: The artist and the band are going to have a rugged but smart look. There look is also going to be very stylish so that they appeal to their target audience. They will appeal to females in our target audience as they may well be a sex symbol; as well as appealing to males in our target audience as they will aspire to look like them. Female Costume: In the bedroom scene the girlfriend is going to be wear very little to portray that she is comfortable with the new man and open with her sexuality; as well as inferring that she is slutty. But in the final scene when the boyfriend is imagining her she is going to be fully dressed in leggings and a girly top. This will emphasise that she used to be modest and not flaunt her body to everyone. Lighting: In the performance scene on the stage there will be very harsh lighting and only the band will be lit with light. This will make the band stand out from the surrounds so that they are the only thing the audience is going to concentrate on. In the bedroom scene the lights will be dimmed to give the scene a sexual feel. The scenes of the singer in the field will be in day light so that the scenery is clear and shows the emptiness as no one else is around. TARGET AUDIENCE Our target audience is both males and females aged 14 to mid 20’s. The reason we have chosen this age range is because that range of people is the age that you’re most affected by the media and change their appearance according to the media that they see. The females of this target audience will look up to the artist and band members as they will think that they are very attractive. The males of this age range will inspire to look the band members as they will be stylish and attractive. All of the boys will want to look like them so that they will be seen as stylish and attractive themselves. We also decided to target this age range of people as they are the ones that could relate most to the issues within the music video. Therefore, they may feel they are not the only one that has been cheated on by a boyfriend or girlfriend as they are watching it in a music video. The song will appeal to all ethnicities and races as it isn’t specific to one. This is because whatever race or ethnicity you are they can still relate to the issues brought up in this music video. As well as age, gender, race or ethnicity we have also classified our music video as being targeted at the working, middle and upper classes of people. The music video doesn’t relate to money in any way so people can relate to it from whichever background they come from. We will make the music video appeal to the target audience in a variety of different ways. One of which is the locations. We will use locations such as houses, bedrooms and fields. These different locations will appeal to the different sectors of our target audience in different ways. As well as locations we will relate to the target audience via the clothes and accessories used. This will relate to the target audience as it will be similar to what they will wear themselves.
AUDIENCE RESEARCH We wanted to know what our target audiences expected when they watched music videos, and in particular what the expected of pop genre music videos. We wanted to know what they expected so that when we come round to making ours we base the filming and the editing on what the target audience expect. In doing this, we hopefully will create a music video that our target audience will enjoy and want to watch. The last question on the questionnaire was ‘Describe what you expect in a Pop/Rock music Video?’ Below the topics of the answers that we got. Good Music Bodies On Show Decent Performances Screaming Entertaining Video Sexy and Attractive People Band playing Love Story Short Story Colour Black Guitars Rock Band Lively Lots Of Things Happening Fast Edits Sex Special Effects Drugs Atmospheric Lighting Dancing Fit Girls Instruments Playing
Shooting Schedule
Changes to the Shooting Schedule As it happens, we didn’t stick to our shooting schedule. Due to snow we had to postpone our filming as we could not get all of the actors and actresses together. Instead of filming in the Tithe Barn (shots 1/8/16/19), we changed the performance scene to being at the same location of the narrative part of the music video. We filmed the majority of the scenes that we needed in one day, but due to fading light we decided to call it a day and resume at another point. The second days worth of filming was shooting shots 14 – 19 taking out the performance shots that we had already filmed.

DATA OBTAINED FROM QUESTIONNAIRE When we conducted our questionnaire, we wanted to get a variety of answers from a wide range of people. But as our target audience is both males and females between the ages of 14 to mid 20’s; we mainly asked people to fill in the questionnaire who were in this class. We felt this was necessary to get accurate and reliable data. From our results it is clear that the majority of the people that we asked were in the 17-20 age class. A total of 15 people out of the 22 that we asked were in this age range. (GRAPH 1) We wanted the answers from the questionnaire to be as random as possible so that we could get an unbiased set of results. From the randomisation of people answering the questions there were 13 males and 9 females. Another question that was in our questionnaire was asking about favourite genre of music. It was clear that from the group the favoured music genre was Pop. When people answered the questionnaire they circled more than one answered. This meant that the results weren’t as accurate as they could have been. (GRAPH 2) A music video can either be narrative or be performance, from the results data we can see that 14 out of the 22 questioned preferred a music video that included both the band performing and including the narrative of a short story that fits with the lyrics. 10 out of 22 people preferred the artist to be male over the 7 who preferred female artists. This could be because the males we questioned aspire to be like the males artist and the females could find the male artist sexually attractive. We asked people where they mainly watch music videos, this question was so that we would know which is the best platform to upload our music video so as it will get the most views. From the questionnaire we found out that the best platform to use would be ‘YouTube’ as 14 people said that is their favoured place to watch a music video. (GRAPH 3) During the planning and construction of our music video we needed to know what type of music video that we wanted to produce. After looking at the results from the questionnaire it is clear that our target audience prefer music videos where the moving image relates to the lyrics and the melody. Out of 22 people, 11 people said they preferred music videos that fitted the music. Our music video is going to fit the music as it is going to be a short story where they lyrics relate to the moving images. Another question that we wanted to get answers for was whether people enjoyed watching realistic or non-realistic music videos. From the bar graph on the right hand side, it is clear to see that people prefer watching realistic music videos over non-realistic. But there was also a high amount of people that said they liked music video that had a mix of both realistic and non-realistic. We are going to take this into account and possibly incorporate a non-realistic element to our music video. We will then appeal to a wider target audience. (GRAPH 4) GRAPH 1 GRAPH 2 GRAPH 3 GRAPH 4
DATA OBTAINED FROM QUESTIONNAIRE We also wanted to focus on the song itself and what sort of sound is going to be produced. All music videos have either diagetic or non-diagetic sound depending on how the artist/band is portrayed. In our music video we want diagetic sound when the band is performing on the stage and non-diagetic sound when the narrative is being played on the screen. From the results that we have collected this choice has been backed up with good evidence that 12 out of 22 people like a mix of diagetic and non-diagetic sound. We need our music video to appeal to our target audience and therefore asked our audience what they felt was the biggest factor to buying new music. They most favoured answer was the song itself with 16 out of 22 votes. This meant that we had to choose our song wisely and pick a popular song. (GRAPH 5) Our questionnaire came back with the result that 12 out of 22 people watch music videos daily. This gave us the indication that if we produced an appealing music video that our target audience like then we are guaranteed for it to be watched a fair amount. GRAPH 5 If we were to sell our music video and the song, we would need to know where a good place to market the product would be. 7 out of 22 people said they bought their music from iTunes. This would be a good place to market our song. As well as this 14 people said their downloaded their music from illegal sources. We would want to have our music on a few of these sites but not all if we could help it, the more illegal downloads of our song and music video the more revenue that we would be losing.

Digipak Production
Research into Digipaks The specific sizing for a Digipak are located on the left. I want my Digipak to be appealing to the audience and it has to entice potential people to buy it. This is going to be the main challenge to come across as most people download music and no longer purchase hard copies. With an intriguing Digipak people will be more interested to purchase a hard copy Digipak as it will potential have a positive visual effect. When I am designing my Digipak, I have to consider: ,[object Object]

COLOUR SCHEMES
DOES IT APPEAL TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE?	From researching Digipaks on the internet, I found the majority use an image or a graphic representation of the band/singer rather than a photograph of the singer/band. On this note, I am going to use an image of outside as my main image on the outside and inside of my Digipak. I shall then use an editing software to make the image look more graphic and animated.
These are initial ideas that I have come up with for the outside of my Digipak. To comply with the forms and conventions of existing Digipaks they all include ,[object Object]
