Sam Dawson is a single father, who has a developmental disability but is well adjusted to society.
Although, Sam often encounters limitations due to his mental disability, nevertheless he is able to take
care of Lucy. Sadly, his life deviates when Lucy turned eight and a judge assume that Mr. Dawson was
not competent to care for Lucy s wellbeing. It was not until the family court realized that it was in
Lucy s best interest to reside with her dad. The film shows a contrast in Sam idea of being a decent
father and the perspective of the government system. The language, images, and themes used in the
film to portray Sam as a childlike, lacking basic scholastic skills, who is not capable of fulfilling his
parental obligations. The government only sees Sam s disability and the limitations he would place on
Lucy. Sadly, the movie leaves a taste of dissatisfaction because negativity and judgement are the

Every establishment that she applies would rather hire her as a waitress because she is white and
speaks English. When applying to Hearthside, Ehrenreich even downgrades herself in order to attain a
job as a housekeeper. I mutter about being woefully out of practice as a waitress, but he s already on to

To ensure internal validity of the study, we employed trained research assistants who at the time of the
study were registrars in psychiatry as research assistants. They had also received 2 weeks training on
the research proctocol. The interviewers had equal level of training and have been involved in similar
