While it is not the first thing that comes to mind when the sins are brought up, gluttony is a huge
aspect of our society, referring to the overconsumption of goods and resources to the point of
waste. Society today literally runs off of gluttony, where people on a daily basis are always after

The poem Caged Bird by Maya Angelou tells the story of two birds: one bird has the luxury of
freedom and the second bird lives its life caged and maltreated by an unknown tyrant. Maya
Angelou wrote this poem during the Civil Rights Era, the period when black activists in the 1950
s and 1960 s fought for desegregation of African Americans. This poem parallels the oppression
that African Americans were fighting during this time period. In Caged Bird , Angelou builds a
strong contrast that shows the historical context of discrimination and segregation through the use
of mood, symbolism, and theme. The mood of Caged Bird changes drastically from stanza to
stanza. Angelou s specific diction choices help to reflect the change from being positive to
negative with some elements of hope involved. The parts of the poem involving the free bird
provide the reader with a feeling of self government.In contrast, the mood associated with the caged
bird is confinment. Despite the negative mood tied to the caged bird there are still elements of
hope woven into these stanzas. The first stanza of the poem introduce the free bird. Angelou uses
words such as leaps . . . and floats (Line 1 3) in description of this character s movements. These
actions relate directly to moving without restrictions. The words leaped and floats are contradicted

Throughout a normal day, the body uses glucose in the form of energy. The glucose that the body
uses is attained from carbohydrates that one receives from a meal eaten during the day. However,
when glucose begins to run out, especially if a person is rigorously exercising, and is not
restocked, the body must use its energy supplies, glycogen. Glycogen is one of the most important
polysaccharides in the human body. It is the body s stored energy; with the highest storing sites
being the muscles and liver. Glycogen is important to the liver because it is able to provide a
backup supply of glucoseso that blood glucose concentration is maintained at a sufficient level to
supply the brain during times of starvation. Glycogen s function in sustaining blood glucose
levels is imperative because glucose is essentially the only fuel source used by the brain. The
primary function of muscle glycogen is to supply fuel for the contraction of the muscles during
exercise. However, insufficient amount of glycogen in the liver and muscles can lead to numerous
diseases, diseases like Glycogen Storage Disorders (GSD). Glycogen synthesis and breakdown
occur by distinctive pathways that are catalyzed by different enzymes. Glycogen phosphorylation
involves three steps: the first is the release of glucose 1 phosphate from glycogen, then altering of
the glycogen substrate to allow additional phosphorylation, and last is the conversion of glucose 1
