SHADING DEVICES
 Shading devices are equipments that are used
externally and internally or in between the
building spaces to protect from direct sunlight.
 The main objective behind using shading
devices is to create comfortable internal
environment.
 It has been proved that
shading devices could
improve building energy
performance, prevent
glare, increase useful
daylight activity and
create sense of security.
USE OF SHADING DEVICES
 To reduce heat gain during summer, reduce
the cooling loads and therefore minimizing the
costs.
 Improving internal environment for greater
comfort.
 Some shading devices improve the internal
and external aesthetics of building.
 Realizing these potential benefits, a varied of
shading configuration have been invented and
put into the market, such as manual, fixed,
internal and external shading device.
 Therefore it is essential to use shading
devices.
SOLAR RADIATION
When sunlight hits a pane of a glass, it
splits into three components-
• Reflected- no effect on
heating.
• Absorbed- glass heats up
which would transfer heat
by conduction and also
emits heat.
• Transmitted- heat up the
surface behind it.
CONSTRAINTS:
 Sun path and wind direction are usually are
usually different. Maintenance of air flow through
the non air conditioned buildings during the
cooler hours of the day.
 There is a need for admitting controlled levels of
diffused air light.
 In most of the cases there will be the requirement
of views out of the window.
TYPES OF SHADING
DEVICES
 INTERNAL
 EXTERNAL
INTERNAL SHADING DEVICES
 Limit the glare resulting from solar
radiation.
 Usually are adjustable and allow
occupants to regulate the amount of
direct sunlight entering their space.
 Internal shading can be provided using
curtain, blinds, louvered shutters etc.
 Internal shading devices should be made
or designed to be durable.

EXTERNAL SHADING DEVICES
 External shading device is primary used
to control sunlight penetration to the
interior of the building.
 Most thermally efficient as it controls the
amount of radiation entering the building
externally.
 The three main types of external shading
devices are:
HORIZONTAL
VERTICAL
EGG-CRATE
Horizontal shading Vertical shading
Egg-crate
shading
HORIZONTAL SHADING
DEVICE
 Horizontal Shading Devices
are usually in the form of
canopies, long verandas,
movable horizontal louver
blades or roof overhangs.
 They are best suited to
southern and northern
elevations and their
performance is measured by
the vertical shadow angle
(epsilon).
Basic Typology of Horizontal Shading Devices for Southern
Exposures
SHADING ISSUES FOR EAST AND WEST FACADE
HORIZONTAL SHADING DEVICE-
OVERHANGS
 These are placed horizontally in front of the
window.
 Their shape, type, depth
and height all differs,
depending upon the sun
condition.
 A window overhung is
usually a horizontal
surface that juts out over
the window to shade it
from the sun.
 This is desirable in order
to reduce glare or solar
heat gain during warm
season.
VERTICAL SHADING
DEVICE
 Vertical Shading Devices
consist of pilasters, louvre
blades or projecting fins in
45" a vertical position.
 Their performance is
measured by the horizontal
shadow angle (delta).
 They are commonly
referred to as fins and are
most effective on western
and eastern elevation.
SHADING DEVICES FOR NON SOUTHERN EXPOSURE
Vertical fin strategy for on north facade
CONFIGURATION OF NON SOUTH
FACING FACADE
 For reasons
of both heat
avoidance
and
economy, it
is often best
to “gang”
the south
facing
shading
devices.
 In order to obtain shading in the late morning and early
afternoon when the sun is not at its high point, the
shading device should be extended either side of the
window opening.
BASIC SHADING STRATEGY FOR SOUTH ELEVATION
EGG-CRATE SHADING
DEVICE
 They are combinations of
vertical and horizontal
devices.
 They are usually in the
form of grill blocks or
decorative screens.
 Their performance is
determined by both the
horizontal and vertical
shadow angles and
(delta and epsilon).
EGG-CRATE SHADING DEVICE
SHADING THROUGH
VEGETATION
 Shading needs to be provided in the way of
landscaping and foliage.
 Deciduous trees are effective as they block the
sun in the summer when it is not desired and
allow sun penetration during the winter.
 The natural environment can be used to shade
low rise buildings.
 Deciduous trees can effectively shade the facade
when heat avoidance is desired, and permit solar
penetration where passive solar gain is sought.
VEGETATIVE SHADING
DESIGN OF SHADING
DEVICE
 STEP ONE
It is necessary to determine when shading is
required, that is at what times of the year and
during what hours of the day. This is usually done
by defining the overheated and underheated
periods.
 STEP TWO
The position of the sun at the times when shading
is required must be established. This is usually
done with the aid of a sun-path diagram.
 STEP THREE
The dimensions and proportions of the shading
device that will provide shading during the period
earlier defined is found. This is done with the aid
of a shadow angle protractor.
 STEP FOUR
The choice of prefabricated devices or the design
of new ones. The design of shading devices takes
not only the require.d geometry into consideration
but also aesthetic and structural factors.
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL
SHADING DEVICES
Shading devices should be selected
according to the orientation of window.
 Vertical shading devices is most effective
when sun is to one side of elevation and at
low angle, such as eastern or western
elevation.
 Horizontal shading devices is most
effective when sun is opposite to the
building façade considered at an high
angle, such as north or south facing walls.
HORIZONTAL SHADOW ANGLE
 The Horizontal Shadow Angle (HSA) is required
for vertical shading devices.
HAS=wall azimuth - solar azimuth
VERTICAL SHADOW ANGLE
 The Vertical Shadow Angle (VSA) is required
for horizontal shading devices.
 It is the angle between ground line and altitude of
sun.

  • 23. SHADING THROUGH VEGETATION  Shading needs to be provided in the way of landscaping and foliage.  Deciduous trees are effective as they block the sun in the summer when it is not desired and allow sun penetration during the winter.  The natural environment can be used to shade low rise buildings.  Deciduous trees can effectively shade the facade when heat avoidance is desired, and permit solar penetration where passive solar gain is sought.
  • 25. DESIGN OF SHADING DEVICE  STEP ONE It is necessary to determine when shading is required, that is at what times of the year and during what hours of the day. This is usually done by defining the overheated and underheated periods.  STEP TWO The position of the sun at the times when shading is required must be established. This is usually done with the aid of a sun-path diagram.
  • 26.  STEP THREE The dimensions and proportions of the shading device that will provide shading during the period earlier defined is found. This is done with the aid of a shadow angle protractor.  STEP FOUR The choice of prefabricated devices or the design of new ones. The design of shading devices takes not only the require.d geometry into consideration but also aesthetic and structural factors.
  • 27. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL SHADING DEVICES Shading devices should be selected according to the orientation of window.  Vertical shading devices is most effective when sun is to one side of elevation and at low angle, such as eastern or western elevation.  Horizontal shading devices is most effective when sun is opposite to the building façade considered at an high angle, such as north or south facing walls.
  • 28. HORIZONTAL SHADOW ANGLE  The Horizontal Shadow Angle (HSA) is required for vertical shading devices. HAS=wall azimuth - solar azimuth
  • 29. VERTICAL SHADOW ANGLE  The Vertical Shadow Angle (VSA) is required for horizontal shading devices.  It is the angle between ground line and altitude of sun.
