Sound effects are artificially created or enhanced sounds used in films, TV shows, and other media to enhance artistic or narrative elements. There are four main disciplines of sound effects: hard effects which are common sounds seen on screen; background effects which set the ambient setting; foley effects which synchronize with on-screen actions; and design effects for unnatural or impossible to record sounds. All sound effects must register instantly with the audience to be effective.

It is a well-established fact that good sound is a valuable addition to a good video because a viewer rarely ever notices its presence. It adds depth, meaning and ties the whole visual experience together.
