This document discusses diegetic and non-diegetic sound in film. Diegetic sound has a source visible on screen, like dialogue between characters, and is not edited in. Non-diegetic sound does not have a visible source and is added in, like background music. Both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds can be used to add drama, emotion or suspense. Examples of diegetic sounds are music from a car radio or footsteps, while non-diegetic sounds include voiceovers or general sound effects.
