Chapter No: 1 - Introduction
1.1 Introduction to Music
Music from the word itself means creativity or an art, it is a very broad term which cannot be
easily defined. There are different scholars who have tried defining music according to their way
but every time everyone has missed one or the other component of music. It is such a broad term
that its definition also varies accordingly, i.e. culture to culture. Commonly music is defined as
“An art which creates creativity by combining the vocals and sounds into a continuous manner of
composition, by using different melodies and musical instruments.” The given definition is still
not a complete one but it is considered as the definition which almost covers many aspects of
music.
The vocals which are combined in a composition of music are based on the emotions and ideas
of vocalist or the one who has written the wordings, wordings of music which means the vocals
are even called as poetic verses. A verse means as a single line whereas poetic verses means
those verses which express the feelings and inner emotions. Music History dates back to Greek
time and it is derived from the Greek word “μουσική” which in English means as Mousike. In
general music has two mediums, one is sound and other one silence, without these two mediums
music is not completed. Some scholars has even used a word named as song to define music, but
song is just as a smallest component of music.
Generally there are two elements of music which are commonly used, they are;
Pitch
Rhythm
Pitch is considered as the most basic and important element of music. Pitch as a part of music it
determines the scale or frequency scale. Pitch of the music can be either high or it can be low, it
completely depends on the type of melody which is being used for music composition, it also has
an association with vocals. Pitch is sometimes directly referred as frequency but in actual they
both are opposite, pitch or scale cannot be measured because it is completely based on the
perception whereas frequency is an objective term which can be measured. The second most
basic element of music is called as rhythm. In musical terms rhythm means the proper sequence

(Muhammad Abubakr) Page 12
in which the pitch and melodies revolve around, if we go into depth rhythm has a strong
association with composition. It is even said that if any melody is not in accordance to the
rhythm it is not music.
Music as it is collectively made up of all cultures around the world especially the Greek culture,
it represent many categories which are called as Genres. The Genres of music are so vast that
they are further divided into Sub-Genres. Genres and Sub-Genres of music will be discussed
later on in the discussion.
Music as it is already been discussed that it is an art or creativity that pleases the listeners. Music
can either be heard live or it can be played, it can belong to any work or any film depending on
the type of recording. Music as a state of art it serves many purposes, it is just not restricted to
an extent. It can either be performed for entertainment purpose, for spiritual purpose, for ritual
purpose, etc. it can be used for any purpose. The reason behind music serving so many purposes
is that it expresses feelings or the inner emotions through vocals and melodies. For better
understanding of music we will go through different concepts of music, which are;
Musician
Composition
Notation
Improvisation
1.1.1 Musician
Musician is a general term which is heard most of the time when talking about music.
Musician refers to a single person, a person who has inborn talent or professionally plays
musical instruments is called as musician.
Musicians are categorized in two types which are;
Amateur Musicians
Professional Musicians
Amateur musicians are categorized under the head of musicians, these musicians are
called are as amateur because they do not sing and compose for money, their aim is to

(Muhammad Abubakr) Page 13
entertain themselves by singing and composing. Whereas, Professional musicians are
those which consider music as their profession and they earn money through it.
Professional musicians are mostly hired by institutes so that they could work with them
for a better contribution towards music. Professional musicians are also considered as
freelancers because when they have an off from singing and composing they try to get in
contract with those people who might help them in pleasing people, actually they try to
find a platform where they could promote themselves.
1.1.2 Composition
Composition has the utmost importance in music, as mentioned earlier it is a component
which completes the definition of music. Composition means to combine the melody
created through different musical instruments in a rhythm. Other aspect of composition
focuses on the vocals, the main target aim of composition is to combine melody and
vocals in a proper rhythm so that it may attract the listeners. Musicians are allowed to
compose music according to themselves, they actually set the melodies as they want.
Composition differs in every music genre, in classical music composition related to
vocals is done very rarely whereas composition related to melodies is improvised by
every musicians. In Rock music the composition related to vocals and melodies are
highly improvised by every musician, hence it shows that composition has a linkage with
improvisation.
Musicians who compose are commonly referred as Composers. Composer is considered
as a profession of music. People who write music are mostly referred as composers,
writing music it means writing melodies and vocals.
1.1.3 Notation
Notation is an important element of rhythm or we can even say that without notation
rhythm is incomplete and if rhythm is incomplete music will also be considered as
incomplete. Notation generally means the written form of rhythm and notes of music,
whereas the process of writing it down is called as notating.
In notation along with the information regarding rhythm and notes information of how to
perform them is also written. Notation is mostly done by the composers, who while
Feasibility of a Music Studio in Pakistan
(Muhammad Abubakr) Page 14
composing notate rhythm and vocals on a piece of paper. Notation varies according to
cultures, every culture as it represent its own composition so the notation is also different.
In Modern era notation is mostly used by musicians who play musical instruments either
during a recording or live, it helps them in knowing what the rhythm of music actually is.
Notation as it differs culture to culture it also differs in genre to genre of music, every
genre has its own notation.
1.1.4 Improvisation
Improvisation has been and current playing a very important role in the field of music.
Improvisation generally means to make something new from old. In music improvisation
means to create a new composition on the spot, new composition may mostly include
improvising of rhythm and melody. Improvisation also has a relation with notation,
musicians who improvise on stage while performing live do changes in their notation.
Modern music is currently being improvised at every level, people prefer improvisation
instead of old typical music.
The 20th
and 21st
century is considered as the most revolutionary period of music due to
excess of improvisation in compositions and rhythms of music.
1.2 Music Theory
People who study music are called as music theorists, they study different elements and concepts
of music which have been discussed already in the above section. Seeing the broader view of
music theory it studies the belief towards music concepts and elements. Music Theory identifies
and studies the pattern of music along with its mechanics and nature. It also studies the rhythms
that are being used by composers in composing their music, along with that this theory also
covers the study of language of music and notation of music.
Music theory mainly studies and focuses on musical elements like rhythm, harmony, form,
melody structure and text. Some theorist have also mentioned other elements which are not
commonly heard in music but they have importance, they are;
Pitch
Texture
Allocation of Voices
Feasibility of a Music Studio in Pakistan
(Muhammad Abubakr) Page 15
Timbre
Expressive Qualities
Structure
Music theorists say that music is not restricted up to these elements, there are also other elements
which are yet to be recognized or not being given a name. Music Theorists are continuously
coming up with new theories which are considered as value addition towards music and they are
also focusing on those elements which are not yet been recognized.
1.3 History of Music
Music of the world dates back around 55,000 years and it is been said by archeologists that
music started from Africa. The continent of Africa is considered as the inventor of music and
from then on music has become a part of Human Life.
Music is found within every culture present in the world and due to this every culture has its own
music traditions. Musical traditions of every country is influenced by many factors of culture,
commonly social, economic and technological factors are influential. Music is such a vast field
that it has been studied by many theorists which are called as Music Theorists, they have
contributed a lot towards the field of music. History of Music as it is laid down back to 55,000
years it has become a proper subject which is being studied by many music theorists and the
subject is named as Musicology.
The History of Music has been divided into different eras, they are;
Prehistoric Era
Ancient Era
Asian Music Era
Antiquity
The Renaissance
20th
and 21st
Century Music
1.3.1 Prehistoric Era
Music as it is said that it was found 50,000 years ago but this is not the reality, music is
considered as the old part of human civilization. Archeologists at several occasions refer

(Muhammad Abubakr) Page 16
human voice as the start of music. Coughing, shrilling and yawning are those elements of
human which are referred towards the base of music.
Prehistoric era is considered as the oldest base of music, this era refers towards preliterate
culture, which means music belonging to those cultures where people were illiterate.
Music of prehistoric era has laid such a strong base of music that up till now the
traditions that were set are being followed. Currently music belonging to Native America
and Australia are considered as the closest cultures that are following prehistoric era’s
musical traditions. Music in prehistoric era mainly was responsible for promoting the folk

1.5 Introduction to Music of Pakistan
Pakistan’s Music is as diverse as the population of Pakistan, in Pakistan you find different
cultures which portray different styles of music. Pakistan music was not made up of one culture,
it consists of many cultures. The Music of Pakistan has went through so many historic phases
and every historic phase is considered as a revolution for Pakistan’s Music. These Historic
phases were mostly led by the invaders who came to Pakistan at the time of independence and
who came afterwards, these invaders were responsible for adding a bit of spices to the music of
Pakistan.
1.6 History of Music of Pakistan
Pakistan’s Music as per different sources dates back to 5000 years, Pakistan is the country which
was once named as Sindu Supta and India (Land of Indus) these were the different names of
Pakistan before Independence.
The basis of Pakistan’s music actually started from the Land of Indus, which is famous for its
civilization. Land of Indus civilization was especially famous for art, dance and music. People
argues on these basis that whether it was a story or does it exists in reality but on findings by
different researchers it was proved that Pakistan’s music started from the Land of Indus. The
researchers found out different monuments like a dancing girl statue and other musical
instruments or we can say musical pots. Overall these were discovered from Moen Jo Daro the
city of Indus Valley leading the researchers to believe that this was the base of Pakistan’s Music.
For having a better view on the Music of Pakistan lets go through some of the historic phases and
their details;
1.6.1 Prehistoric Music 7000-2500 BC
It is already discussed in the start that round about 5000 years BC the music of Pakistan
started, when the monuments of dancing girl and other were discovered in Moen Jo Daro.
The melodies at that time are yet to be identified, they are almost unnamed even the
lyrics at that time have not been yet recognized but due to some clues it is been said that
it belongs to the culture of Mehr Garh and Kot Dijan which were the cities of Indus
Valley.

The Archeologists also made discoveries from the Indus Valley which strongly supported
as the base of Pakistan’s Music. Different archeologists of the world tried to discover the
actual shape of Pakistan’s Music, they even succeeded due to their findings.
Archeologists found out different musical instruments which were handmade, mainly
they found out flutes which were in different designs. Along with that archeologists also
discovered different kind of instruments which are recognized as string instruments in the
modern world of music.
1.6.2 Buddhist Period 275 BC to 600 AD
The Buddhist period is also another addition to Pakistan’ Music. Buddhist period
revolves around the Ghandara culture, a culture where images were found out in which
people were shown holding different handmade music instruments and even some of the
images portrayed people singing. Although the music or melodies of Ghandara culture
are yet not recognized, their songs are also not much known. Even after no proper
recognition the Archeologists were able to find out that the songs were mostly sung for
the religious purposes like for the Buddha and Hindu Diets.
1.6.3 Radical Changes
The Music of Pakistan is it is portrayed that it has a link with the Indian Music, it went
through many radical changes before the independence.
The Temple music which belonged purely to Indian Culture was transformed into Folk
Music by the Muslims and Low-Caste hindus belonging to India. Folk Music mainly
included the pure music practices which was considered as an attraction for the Sufi’s
(Muslim Sufi’s). The Muslim Sufi’s found folk music so attractive that they used it to
communicate with the people their teachings in an effective and melodious manner.
The Music of Pakistan was mainly revolutionized during the periods of Sultan
Muhammad Bin Toughlak, Ibrahim Shah Sharqi, Sultan Zain Ul Abedin and Akbar.
Along with their periods the arrival of Islam also influenced the music especially the
Sufism was revolutionized. The Sufi’s conveyed their teaching mostly in the language of
Arabic and Persian which lead towards a new blend of Music. The Muslim musicians
belonging to this period were recognized by the famous Muslim rulers and Hindu Rajas

due to their major contributions towards the music field especially towards Folk Music.
The main contributors were Hazrat Amir Khusrao and Sultan Hussain Sharqi.
Going through the Historical phases one thing is common that Pakistan’s music is collectively a
combination of Indo-Pak traditions, due to the reason that these countries lived together for a
very long time.

part of Music and at first it just covered the Urdu poetry but later on as time passed the
poetry of other languages also started influencing the Ghazals of Pakistan. The Singers of
Ghazals are mostly trained and it is been said that these singers sing in the form of Khyal.
Khyal is an urdu word which in English means as Imagination. The Singers imagine
themselves in the poetic situation that they have been singing, overall they stay in an
imaginary world.

  • 11. Feasibility of a Music Studio in Pakistan (Muhammad Abubakr) Page 11 Chapter No: 1 - Introduction 1.1 Introduction to Music Music from the word itself means creativity or an art, it is a very broad term which cannot be easily defined. There are different scholars who have tried defining music according to their way but every time everyone has missed one or the other component of music. It is such a broad term that its definition also varies accordingly, i.e. culture to culture. Commonly music is defined as “An art which creates creativity by combining the vocals and sounds into a continuous manner of composition, by using different melodies and musical instruments.” The given definition is still not a complete one but it is considered as the definition which almost covers many aspects of music. The vocals which are combined in a composition of music are based on the emotions and ideas of vocalist or the one who has written the wordings, wordings of music which means the vocals are even called as poetic verses. A verse means as a single line whereas poetic verses means those verses which express the feelings and inner emotions. Music History dates back to Greek time and it is derived from the Greek word “μουσική” which in English means as Mousike. In general music has two mediums, one is sound and other one silence, without these two mediums music is not completed. Some scholars has even used a word named as song to define music, but song is just as a smallest component of music. Generally there are two elements of music which are commonly used, they are; Pitch Rhythm Pitch is considered as the most basic and important element of music. Pitch as a part of music it determines the scale or frequency scale. Pitch of the music can be either high or it can be low, it completely depends on the type of melody which is being used for music composition, it also has an association with vocals. Pitch is sometimes directly referred as frequency but in actual they both are opposite, pitch or scale cannot be measured because it is completely based on the perception whereas frequency is an objective term which can be measured. The second most basic element of music is called as rhythm. In musical terms rhythm means the proper sequence
  • 12. Feasibility of a Music Studio in Pakistan (Muhammad Abubakr) Page 12 in which the pitch and melodies revolve around, if we go into depth rhythm has a strong association with composition. It is even said that if any melody is not in accordance to the rhythm it is not music. Music as it is collectively made up of all cultures around the world especially the Greek culture, it represent many categories which are called as Genres. The Genres of music are so vast that they are further divided into Sub-Genres. Genres and Sub-Genres of music will be discussed later on in the discussion. Music as it is already been discussed that it is an art or creativity that pleases the listeners. Music can either be heard live or it can be played, it can belong to any work or any film depending on the type of recording. Music as a state of art it serves many purposes, it is just not restricted to an extent. It can either be performed for entertainment purpose, for spiritual purpose, for ritual purpose, etc. it can be used for any purpose. The reason behind music serving so many purposes is that it expresses feelings or the inner emotions through vocals and melodies. For better understanding of music we will go through different concepts of music, which are; Musician Composition Notation Improvisation 1.1.1 Musician Musician is a general term which is heard most of the time when talking about music. Musician refers to a single person, a person who has inborn talent or professionally plays musical instruments is called as musician. Musicians are categorized in two types which are; Amateur Musicians Professional Musicians Amateur musicians are categorized under the head of musicians, these musicians are called are as amateur because they do not sing and compose for money, their aim is to
  • 13. Feasibility of a Music Studio in Pakistan (Muhammad Abubakr) Page 13 entertain themselves by singing and composing. Whereas, Professional musicians are those which consider music as their profession and they earn money through it. Professional musicians are mostly hired by institutes so that they could work with them for a better contribution towards music. Professional musicians are also considered as freelancers because when they have an off from singing and composing they try to get in contract with those people who might help them in pleasing people, actually they try to find a platform where they could promote themselves. 1.1.2 Composition Composition has the utmost importance in music, as mentioned earlier it is a component which completes the definition of music. Composition means to combine the melody created through different musical instruments in a rhythm. Other aspect of composition focuses on the vocals, the main target aim of composition is to combine melody and vocals in a proper rhythm so that it may attract the listeners. Musicians are allowed to compose music according to themselves, they actually set the melodies as they want.
