2. Sexuality : A name for the sexual feelings and behaviour
of a person.
How do you contrast a homosexual man or woman
from a heterosexual man or woman? This is usually
determined by what they wear/their appearance,
how they sound and how they behave.
3. Stereotypical homosexual men are overally
effeminate. They wear ‘girly’ colours and behave
in a feminine manner. By this I mean the way that
they stand and a position themselves. Also the
way that they speak.
Stereotypically they have a career in things that
would be thought of as ‘feminine jobs’ such as
fashion designers and hair stylists.
This is similar for homosexual females.
Stereotypically they are very masculine and are
quite loud and aggressive. Stereotypically they
have careers in things such as a PE teacher or the
military as they are thought of as ‘manly’ jobs.
4. An example of how a homosexual male is
represented in a TV drama is ‘Kurt Hummel’ in
‘Glee’.
5. Kurt completley matches up to the stereotype of a
homosexual male. This is because he wears very over
the top, glittery and feminine outfits. He makes his
male clothes feminine by adding sequins or ‘girly’
colours such as pinks and purples. Also the way Kurt
positions himself, he stands in an effeminate manner,
for example the three pictures on the last slide. On the
first two pictures he is stood with his hands on his hips.
On the first picture not only does he have his hand on
his hip but has his other hand bent whilst he bends his
hip. This is because he is doing the single ladies dance
by Beyonce which is a feminine dance performed by
women. At the start of the series kurt tried to hide that
he was gay but his friends figured it out, not just
because of his style but because of his huge amount of
knowledge on fashion for both men and women.
7. If you were to see the woman on the left
then you would think that she is
heterosexual, this is because she is
presented in a very ‘girly’ and
effeminate manner eg. Hair down and
curled, crop top and lighter colours. If
you were to see the woman on the
right you would instantly categorise
them as a homosexual woman. She is
dressed in baggy clothes such as a
jumper and baggy trousers which
would usually be associated with a
male and preferably a chavy male.
She has her hair tied back and has her
hand in her pocket which is a
stereotypical male position. The
woman on the left is wearing make
up whereas the woman on the right
isnt which would also make you think
this.
8. Although there is a wider acceptable in different
sexualities in society nowadays, Tv remains quite
stereotypical and conservative as they don’t want
to offend their viewers.
Lighting and colour is a big part in portraying
someones sexuality. Soft and bright colours most
likely represent a homosexual man or a girl.
Harsh and darker colours are thought to be more
masculine and therefore more likely to represent
a man or a homosexual woman. Another
example, if you had a nightclub of homosexual
men and the lighting is dark it can make the
scenario quite seedy. This has been shown in
series such as Tv dramas such as ‘queer as folk’
9. The Gaze
How one person looks at one another. This can
involve close up shots.
Laura Mulvey male gaze 1975 : The camera lingers
on the curves of the female body, events which
occur to women are presented largely in the
context of a mans reaction to these events.
Relegates women to the state of objects.
The gaze can work in any sexuality. Male looking at
female, female looking at male, male looking at
male, female looking at female.
