There are three main types of rural settlements: dispersed settlements which consist of isolated farms or small hamlets separated by distance, nucleated settlements where buildings are clustered around a central point such as villages, and towns with dispersed dwellings like farms and houses. Settlements can also be classified by their shape, such as linear ribbon developments along roads or rivers, or radial towns arranged in circles around a central point. Additionally, settlements are distinguished by their economic activity, for example agro-towns with large populations focused on agriculture, residential towns used mostly for housing, or fishing towns specializing in seafood.
