One of the primary data sources we use on the Splunk Security Research Team is attack data collected from various corners of the globe. We often obtain this data in the wild using honeypots, with the goal of uncovering new or unusual attack techniques and other malicious activities for research purposes. The nirvana state is a honeypot tailored to mimic the kind of attack/attacker you are hoping to study. To do this effectively, the honeypot must very closely resemble a legitimate system. As a principal security research at Splunk, co-founder of Zenedge (Now part of Oracle), and Security Architect at Akamai I have spent many years protecting organizations from targeted as well as internet-wide attacks, and honeypots has been extremely useful (at times better than threat intel) tool at capturing and studying active malicious actors.
In this talk, I aim to provide an introduction to honeypots, explain some of the experiences and lessons learned we have had running Cowrie a medium interaction SSH honeypot base on Kippo. How we modified cowrie to make it more realistic and mimic the systems and attack we are trying to capture as well as our approach for the next generation of honeypots we plan to use in our research work. The audience in this talk will learn how to deploy and use cowrie honeypot as a defense mechanism in their organization. Also, we will share techniques on how to modify cowrie in order to masquerade different systems and vulnerabilities mimicking the asset(s) being defended. Finally, share example data produced by the honeypot and analytic techniques that can be used as feedback to improve the deployed honeypot. We will close off the talk by sharing thoughts on how we are evolving our approach for capturing attack data using honeypots and why.

Errors that you are getting..........
Error 1:- you may notice an error saying you're not in the sudoers file and the incident is going to be reported.
Error 2:- sorry user usuario is not allowed to execute '/usr/bin/passwd root' as root on.
Cause and symptoms :-
the /etc/sudoers file has been altered to no longer allow users in the admin group to escalate privilege
the permissions on the /etc/sudoers file are changed to something other than 0440
a user who should not have been has been taken out of the admin group.
By above error and cause can be done by following steps.....
To Reset Root Passwd
step1 :- Restart your server or desktop
step2 :- press continue shift untill boot menu show
step3 :- select ubuntu generic second option press Enter
step4 :- then select root shell press Enter
step5 :- type mount -o rw,remount /
step6 :- sudo passwd root or passwd root assign passwd and then repeat again the same passwd
Note :- inplace of root you can set your name,hostname any name that u assign during installation OR Login.
You can also Create NEW USER
step7 :-sudo adduser ubuntu and give new passwd

Abstract:
Are you testing the security of your web applications, web sites, and web servers? The malicious threat actors on the Internet almost certainly are. We will cover AppSec along with a brief review of the 2017 OWASP Top 10 List. The focus of the presentation is how to get started with AppSec and where to continue learning more. Accompanying the presentation are live demos of Nikto and the OWASP Zed Attack Proxy (ZAP).
Bio:
Matt Scheurer serves as Chair of the Cincinnati Networking Professionals Association Security Special Interest Group (CiNPA Security SIG) and works as a Systems Security Engineer in the Financial Services industry. He holds a CompTIA Security+ Certification and possesses multiple Microsoft Certifications including MCP, MCPS, MCTS, MCSA, and MCITP. He has presented on numerous Information Security topics as a featured speaker at many local area technology groups and large Information Security conferences all over the Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky Tri-State. We will cover AppSec along with a brief review of the 2017 OWASP Top 10 List. The focus of the presentation is how to get started with AppSec and where to continue learning more. Accompanying the presentation are live demos of Nikto and the OWASP Zed Attack Proxy (ZAP).

Matt Scheurer serves as Chair of the Cincinnati Networking Professionals Association Security Special Interest Group (CiNPA Security SIG) and works as a Systems Security Engineer in the Financial Services industry. He holds a CompTIA Security+ Certification and possesses multiple Microsoft Certifications including MCP, MCPS, MCTS, MCSA, and MCITP. Capture-HPC is an open source client honeypot that can actively crawl the web and interact with malicious websites to observe system activities. It works by installing a client on a virtual machine that will browse the web and report back any malicious activity to the Capture-HPC server. The server collects logs of the client's browsing sessions. The presentation demonstrated how to set up Capture-HPC's server and client environments, edit its exception list to filter normal events, execute URL scans, and address issues that came up during large-scale testing. The goal was to encourage using open source security tools like Capture-HPC to build your own security research lab.

Lars does not only keep an eye on all devices inside SUSE R&D, he is also maintaining some of the biggest packages in the server:monitoring repository like Nagios, Icinga, Shinken, check_mk, mod_gearman, Naemon, PNP4Nagios or the monitoring-plugins (and others).
The integration of some of those packages into a complex, secure and high available monitoring setup together with some tips and tricks and insights into the SUSE R&D infrastructure will be demonstrated.
