Honest and Capable leaders are needed to make the right decisions for the country. A good
leader must have integrity to do what is right rather than what is popular, so that they will inspire
the people and thus be able to carry people with them when decisions (even tough and less
popular) are made for the good of the country. Thereby, sustaining Singapore’s future
success .Potential leaders are specially groomed and selected. Singapore needs good leadership
not only in government, but also in every segment of society. For example, Singapore was able to
tide over the most recent Asian Financial Crisis because our leaders provided good economic and
political leadership to Singapore by diversifying the economy so that when one sector failed,
there were other section to depend on. Thus, leadership is all important if Singapore is continue
to prosper and face up the challenges that might come its way.
Anticipate change and stay relevant is an important principle of good governance.
For contributing to sustaining Singapore’s future success by anticipating change and staying
relevant, Singapore can look forward to the challenges of the future with confidence. The
government needs to take risks and make decisions that are forward-looking in anticipation of
future challenges. For example, in preparing for Singapore’s future water need. The government
has taken steps to ensure that Singapore is self=sufficient in water supply. This has been done
through producing “NEWater” and desalinated water. Another example would be how through
the decision to build the two Integrated Resort. The government has taken bold steps to help
Singapore to capture the growing tourists market in the face of rising competition. Students can
stretch their potential by coming up with creative and innovative ideas. Workers too could play
their part by upgrading their knowledge and skills to stay employable and contribute to the
nation.
Reward for work and work for reward is an important principle of good governance.
Reward for work and work for reward encourages people to continue to work hard to help
Singapore to develop and stay ahead of competition. Thereby sustaining Singapore’s future
success.
Meritocracy is a key part of this principle. Meritocracy helps to give everybody in society an equal
opportunities to achieve their best and be rewarded for their performance regardless of race,
religion and socio-economic background. For example, hard working students who excel in their
studies and co-curricular activities receive rewards in the form of Edusave Scholarship and Merit
Business. This is especially important in people limited Singapore, where there is a need to
develop each of her citizens to the fullest of his ability.

By allowing people more opportunities to anticipate in important decision-making. A stronger
bond is built between the people and the country. This will help to keep the people actively
involved with the government and supportive of the decisions made by the government. Thereby
sustaining Singapore’s future success. For example, in 2004 the government consulted the people
on the issue of having a casino as part of an Integrated Resort. During feedback sessions, people
voiced their support and concern about the government’s proposal. The government considered
the concerns raised and decided to go ahead with the setting up of a casino as a part of an
Integrated Resort. This is important as such participation would lead to people feeling a deeper
sense of belonging to the country.
In conclusion, by comparing the four principles of good governance. I feel that “leadership is a
key” is the most important principle of good governance in Singapore. Having capable and honest
leaders is important in not only ensuring good governance but also sustaining it in long run in
Singapore. This principle is the most important as without good leaders all the other principles of
being forward-looking and meritocracy will not come about.

The Graduate Mother was introduced in 1984 to encourage marriages among graduates and to
encourage graduates to have more children. This was a measure to stop the failing birth rate
among women especially graduates who were marrying later and women bearing fewer children.
If the trend continues there was possible
