Title 
 Reflect the main idea of the manuscript 
 Has “style” 
 Clear as a stand alone statement 
 Easily shortened for the running head
Abstract 
 Brief (usually 150-250 words) 
 Comprehensive summary 
 Non-evaluative (report rather than 
evaluate; do not include anything new) 
 Describes the topic, scope, sources 
reviewed, and conclusions
Introduction 
 Gives a clear statement of the problem and 
reasons for studying it 
 Describes the scope and limits of the review 
 Gives concise, appropriate background discussion 
of the problem 
 States how this work differs from or is related to 
work previously published 
 Is generally one or two paragraphs in length

 Outlines what has been done before by citing 
pertinent literature; semi-relevant literature should
