Second Life Reflection
Zachary Sissel
This Second Life experience was somewhat odd and unusual. I felt crept out at times exploring on there.
It was a weird feeling knowing that there were so many people playing the game at the same time and it
is quite unfiltered. This is designed for no younger than High School students in my opinion. It would be
terrible for a young child to get on there and see some of the things they allow to go unfiltered.
Although, I do see the benefits of the program in a certain type of classroom. If used in a computer
programming class or something of that nature I feel would be of great benefit as you can build and
explore practically anything you want. Engineers would benefit from this program as well so I see this
most benefiting Math and Science in the Pillar system. However, I also see gains in Language
development as well, because there are so many people playing this game you meet many people from
different countries and speak many languages. You could really touch up a language you are trying to
learn by going on there and just conversing with a person of the same language you are using.
Personally, as a Physical Education major I would not want this in my classroom. To be able to really get
into the game you must devote a lot of time sitting at a computer. This contradicts everything that I as a
teacher would want my students doing. I guess what I would change about this assignment is maybe
find a way to gear it towards maybe a Physical Education class if possible.
