This study examined the effectiveness of using Second Life as a virtual learning environment to teach fundamental arts education concepts to 210 undergraduate primary education students in Australia. Students were split into two groups - one took workshops in Second Life, the other used traditional face-to-face methods. Both groups explored concepts in dance, drama, media, music and visual art. Results showed the Second Life approach was more effective for teaching drama concepts, while the traditional approach worked better for visual arts. Overall, both methods led to similar improvements in students' understanding of key arts education concepts from the Queensland curriculum.
