Invasive seaweed species have overtaken reefs in Kaneohe Bay for over 30 years. While a mechanical collector removes some seaweed, it returns quickly. Growing and releasing sea urchins is a potential solution as they eat invasive seaweeds. Students at Hale Kula Elementary grew sea urchins using different methods, finding higher survival rates using only ocean water versus a fresh/salt water mixture. In December 2012, surviving sea urchins were released into the ocean in hopes of controlling invasive seaweed growth.
