DSpace-CRIS: new features and contribution to the DSpace mainstream
The presentation focus on the latest releases of DSpace-CRIS, compatible with DSpace 5 and 6, with new exciting features. Particularly interesting is the recent integration between DSpace-CRIS and CKAN released as an independent module. The DSpace-CKAN Integration Module has already been released in open source (same license than DSpace) and it can easily adopted also by standard DSpace installations, both JSPUI or XMLUI.
Starting with DSpace-CRIS 5.6.1, along with the security fixes of DSpace JSPUI 5.6, the following features have been introduced: an extendible UI to deliver the bitstreams with dedicated viewers, a simple metadata editing of any DSpace object; the editing of archived items using the submission UI; a deduplication and duplicate-alert tool; improved ORCiD synchronization; improved submission form; improved security model for CRIS entities; creation of CRIS object as part of the submission process, automatic calculation of metrics; advanced import framework; on-demand DOI registration; template services.
DSpace-CKAN Integration Module allows users to directly preview the dataset content deposited in a CKAN instance from DSpace via a “curation task”. DSpace-CRIS and DSpace-CKAN will be supported by 4Science also for the future major versions of the platform and the roadmap to the DSpace 7 compatibility will be also presented.

Panel Discussion: COAR Next Generation Repositories: Results and Recommendations
The presentation focus on the recommended technologies to implement in Repository platforms
The nearly ubiquitous deployment of repository systems in higher education and research institutions provides the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication. However, repository platforms are still using technologies and protocols designed almost twenty years ago, before the boom of the Web and the dominance of Google, social networking, semantic web and ubiquitous mobile devices.
To that end, in April 2016, COAR launched a working group to identify the technologies and architectures of the next generation of repositories. There are two threads to our work: (1) increase the exposure by repositories of uniform behaviors that can be used by machine agents to fuel novel scholarly applications that reach beyond the scope of a single repository and that enable to smoothly embed repository content into mainstream web applications. (2) integrate with existing scholarly infrastructures, specifically those aimed at identification, as a means to solidly embed repositories in the overall scholarly communication landscape.
This panel will present the results of the COAR Next Generation Repositories Working Group including our vision, design assumptions, use cases, architectural and technical recommendations, and next steps. The session will also include time for audience discussion and feedback.
DSpace for Cultural Heritage: adding support for images visualization,audio/v...
Digital Repositories are continuously evolving into platforms aimed at managing, visualizing, curating and preserving a variety of different cultural digital objects together with their relationships
To support interoperability and to allow a broad dissemination and re-use of cultural heritage and research results, we have built two DSpace add-ons to be released as open source, the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) Image Viewer and the audio/video streaming module. The first one manages the complexity of digital objects such as page sequences, chapters and sections, exposing the metadata and the structure with the IIIF presentation API and use the IIIF API to provide fast visualization and low bandwidth use. The streaming module allows to stream audio / video content loaded in the repository using adaptive streaming and the DASH industry standard. Both modules provide a full open source stack or enable the integration with external Images and Media Server.
Managing the relations between digital objects both in a hierarchical or relational way is a key feature, in order to manage every kind of cultural heritage material. Thus we are enhancing the DSpace Data Model in order to provide not only structural metadata management but also the description of relationships within cultural contexts.

About the Webinar
In May 2011, the Library of Congress officially launched a new modeling initiative, Bibliographic Framework Initiative, as a linked data alternative to MARC. The Library then announced in November 2012 the proposed model, called BIBFRAME. Since then, the library world is moving from mainly theorizing about the BIBFRAME model to attempts to implement practical experimentation and testing. This experimentation is iterative, and continues to shape the model so that it’s stable enough and broadly acceptable enough for adoption.
In this webinar, several institutions will share their progress in experimenting with BIBFRAME within their library system. They will discuss the existing, developing, and planned projects happening at their institutions. Challenges and opportunities in exploring and implementing BIBFRAME in their institutions will be discussed as well.

Best Practices for Descriptive Metadata for Web Archiving
Web archiving has become imperative to ensure that our digital heritage does not disappear forever, yet many institutions have not begun this work. In addition, archived websites are not easily discoverable, which severely limits their use. To address this challenge, OCLC Research has established the OCLC Research Library Partnership Web Archiving Metadata Working Group to develop a data dictionary that will be compatible with library and archives standards. Three reports on this project are available in late 2017, focused on metadata best practices guidelines, user needs and behaviors, and evaluation of web archiving tools.

The last two years have been very intense for the DSpace community. A great effort has been put into finalizing the development of a DSpace release, 7.0, which has many changes from previous releases, particularly with regard to UI technology.
As part of the activities related to the creation of DSpace 7, particularly innovative is the submission and workflow process that can be associated with the different collections.
The presentation will provide a deep dive into the new Enhanced Submission and Workflow features of DSpace 7, including how to configure, customize & use this feature (and differences with DSpace 6 and below)
Large Scale Data Clean-ups & Challenges for the Library
This presentation talks about problems related to big data clean up. It discusses various approaches at the University of Auckland Libraries and Learning services and gives two projects as examples.
VRA Core 4 in Transcultural Studies - Adopting Core 4 XML in a DH Environment.
This presentation has two parts: first, I introduce the Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA) at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe" at Heidelberg University. At the core of the HRA's development is the Tamboti metadata framework, a "suite of web applications that forms an integrated environment for interdisciplinary and internationally distributed studies in transcultural dynamics."
In the second part I present Ziziphus, the VRA Core editor which is currently being developed by the HRA. It uses VRA Core 4 XML as a base and provides a user-friendly interface where editors can add and edit image metadata without being exposed to the raw XML. To use VRA Core 4 for transcultural studies within Tamboti a number of adjustments were made and developed into a local extension. In four examples these extensions are discussed, before a screencast demonstrates the use of the editor.

Linked Data Implementations—Who, What and Why?
Presented at the CNI Spring Membership Meeting in San Antonio, Texas 4 April 2016. OCLC Research conducted an International Linked Data Survey for Implementers in 2014 and 2015, receiving responses from a total of 90 institutions in 20 countries. In the 2015 survey, 112 projects or services that consumed or published linked data were described (compared to 76 in 2014). This presentation summarizes the 2015 survey results: 1) which institutions have implemented or are implementing linked data; 2) what linked data sources institutions are consuming, and why; 3) what institutions are publishing, and why; 4) barriers and advice from the implementers.
Islandora and Linked Open Data
Islandora is a digital asset management system that provides out-of-the-box repository solutions for a wide range of digital collections and research domains. This presentation will examine standard and custom-built functionality of Islandora through a Linked Open Data (LOD) lens. The concepts of connecting related data across the Web using URIs, HTTP and RDF will be discussed in the Islandora+Fedora context, including strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement in the future.

OCLC Research conducted an International Linked Data Survey for Implementers in 2014 and 2015, receiving responses from a total of 90 institutions in 20 countries. In the 2015 survey, 112 projects or services that consumed or published linked data were described (compared to 76 in 2014). This presentation summarizes the 2015 survey results: 1) which institutions have implemented or are implementing linked data; 2) what linked data sources institutions are consuming, and why; 3) what institutions are publishing, and why; 4) barriers and advice from the implementers.
Islandora and Linked Open Data
Islandora is a digital asset management system that provides out-of-the-box repository solutions for a wide range of digital collections and research domains. This presentation will examine standard and custom-built functionality of Islandora through a Linked Open Data (LOD) lens. The concepts of connecting related data across the Web using URIs, HTTP and RDF will be discussed in the Islandora+Fedora context, including strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement in the future.
