institutions are prioritizing in terms of

2007 Campus Facilities Inventory
The last time this information was collected was 14 years ago. Much has
changed since then.
Information Collected
● Institutional Identification to cross reference
data with IPEDS database
● Respondent Information
● NASF by FICM Space Type
○ Education & General NASF (E&G) - space
used for teaching research, or the
preservation of knowledge
○ Auxiliary NASF - income generating space
such as residential and athletic facilities
Key Insights
● 284 institutions included in the survey
analysis.
● Mean NASF per student was 224.1 across all
space types.
● The distribution pattern of mean NASF per
student across space types remained
relatively unchanged from past surveys.
● Both private and public 4-year institutions
reported decreases in Office NASF per in-
person student.

2021 CFI Survey and Data Collection
88 institutions participated from 30 states.
Survey Methodology
● Survey period was January 11 to April 17,
2021
● 88 institutions participated, 83 provided
NASF data
● The 2022 survey will build on lessons
learned from the 2021 survey, aim to
include more participants, and, like the 2007
survey include data from 2021 participants
to create a robust dataset.

How We Cut the Data
Responses were analyzed by institutional size, sector, and campus setting.
IPEDS Data
● The analysis calculated number of in-person
students using IPEDS data on the percent of
students engaged only in distance learning
and subtracting them from total enrollment,
since distance learners do not use campus
facilities.
● The survey data was cut by institution size
(in-person enrollment), sector (public,
private, 2-year, 4-year), and campus setting
(urban, suburban, town/rural).

High Level Findings

Key Findings - Current State
● Growth in student enrollment has outpaced growth
in campus facilities.
● Public schools are typically larger and so have a
larger facility portfolio than private schools.
● Private schools provide more space per in-person
student than public schools.
● There is a robust correlation between in-person
student enrollment and the amount of instructional
space on campus across all campus settings. Less so
for other space types
Key Findings - Future Plan
● Institutions are much more likely to update or
adapt existing facilities as opposed to building
new ones.
● Instructional space is the most likely space type
for investment over the next year.
● Institutions are planning to continue and increase
remote learning and remote work.
● Institutions plan to make major investments in
technology infrastructure, campus computing
infrastructure, and meeting room technology.
