Is there a Correlation between Gender and the Choice of a...
Have you ever wondered whether or not there was any correlation between gender
and college major? We conducted a survey consisting of 105 people (51 males and 54
females) and of those people, 34.3% (17 males and 19 females) did not think that
there was a direct correlation between the two. Our goal was to see if genderdid in
fact influence one s choice of major, or if it had no influence at all. After proper
surveying and thorough analysis of literature, we found that both female and male
students generally have college majors concentrated in certain areas and industries.

Both of these articles are accurate examples as to a potential reason of females
having specific college majors. Social norms may have an impact on college major
choice for women as well. Women tend to be less motivated by the promise of
monetary success and more by their passions. Our survey results supported this
social norm because the vast majority of females said that they chose their major
because they enjoy that field of study, whereas the vast majority of males said they
chose their major to obtain a high salary.
Males:
Through thorough research and survey analysis we were able to conclude that
there tends to be a higher population of male students pursuing Engineering and
Business majors compared to all other college majors. Not only is this true at
North Carolina State University, but we also found this true for other universities
in the US as well. Out of 51 males who completed our survey, roughly 22 percent
informed us they were enrolled in some form of Business major, whereas only 8
percent of the females surveyed were enrolled in a business major. Not only were
there a higher percentage of males pursuing Business majors, but there were also a
higher percentage of males seeking an Engineering degree. Out of 51 males

City Warming Over the last decades, the Earth s human population has been growing
exponentially and now lies above 7 billion people. With such an immense number of
humans roaming around the Earth, throughout time, urbanization will occur
expanding the size of many cities. As a rural area expands so does the amount of
asphalt and concrete buildings within the city. This is how an urban heat island
occurs. An urban heat island poses many serious threats as it raises the temperature
significantly at night and can cause many fatal health risks during the day. Although
urban heat islands seem drastic, there remains ways that could potentially reduce the
effects. Minimizing the effect of the urban heat island can be accomplished by
increasing the amount of vegetation, which includes trees and natural grass, around
new parks and recreational facilities. An urban heat island is normally classified as a
metropolitan area that is warmer than its environment and the amount of concrete and
asphalt a city has greatly contributes to the problem (WTTU). A big city usually
contains vast amounts of roads, buildings and asphalt which are materials that absorb

The Interlopers And Mending Wall Literary Analysis
A holiday, or tradition is usually looked upon as times of happiness and a way to
gather with loved ones, but it isn t always that way. Traditions are a part of most
people s lives, and is really never seen as a negative connotation. Yet, there is
always another side to the story. In the two pieces, The Interlopers and Mending
Wall, tradition can be seen embedded in between the lines. The Interlopers features
two men whose families have hated one another for generations, all over a piece of
land that really has no value. The men find themselves bleeding out pinned under a
large tree branch, where they die to wolves. In Mending Wall, another set of two
men walk along a wall rebuilding it, as it has fallen apart during the winter season, but

In the play Antigone, Creon starts off as the loyal king of Thebes. He is loyal to the
gods and loyal to the welfare of Thebes. However, over the course of the play, Creon
degenerates into a tyrant. His degeneration is showing his character development.
Creon s pride about the human law also develops throughout the play, creating
conflict with the divine law. When Antigone rebels against his law, he becomes
stubborn, and makes myopic decisions and grows into his hamartia. Besides his
hamartia, Creon s position as the king makes him a power hungry man. His power
madness degenerates him into becoming a ruthless and vindictive man, even to his

As I walked I noticed there were customers, all Caucasians, sitting at four different
tables that were all against the wall and the middle of the dining area was empty. I
proceeded to the bar and was greeted by the bartender/waitress, who was also a
female Caucasian. The employees at the restaurant were mostly Caucasian with the
exception of one Hispanic looking waitress and the part of the cooking staff.
Shortly after, a white couple sat down a few bar stools away from me, but not very

began to take off in the mid 1950s. She toured Europe with a production of Porgy
and Bess. She studied modern dance on television shows and recorded an album in

Egypt. Angelou and Guy later moved to Ghana where Angelou worked as an
instructor and administrator of Ghana s School of Music and Drama as well as an
editor for The African Review and a writer for the The Ghanaian Times. She also
worked at the Ghanaian Broadcasting Company. While she traveled the world, she

Pearl In The Scarlet Letter
One of the most significant writers of the romantic period in American literature was
Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne wrote stories that opposed the ideas of
Transcendentalism. Since he had ancestors of Puritan belief, Hawthorne wrote many
stories about Puritan New England. His most famous story is the
Scarlet Letter. This novel tells of the punishment of a woman, Hester Prynne, who
committed adultery and gave birth to Pearl. A minister of Boston, Arthur
Dimmesdale, had an affair with Hester while believing that her husband, Roger
Chillingworth, had died. However, Chillingworth did not die and appears during the
early stages of Hester s punishment.

Later, Hester receives word that the magistrates want to take Pearl away from her.
Hester takes Pearl to the governor s house where the child meets her father, Arthur
Dimmesdale.
After Dimmesdale persuades the governors to allow Hester to keep Pearl, he gives
the child a kiss on the forehead. This kiss hints that Dimmesdale is Pearl s father.
When Hester and Pearl return from Governor Winthrop s death bed, they join
Dimmesdale standing on the town s scaffold. Pearl asks Dimmesdale Wilt thou stand
here with mother and me, to morrow noontide? (Hawthorne 131) twice.
Realizing that Arthur is her father, Pearl wants him to confess his sin so that the
three of them can live peacefully. Next, Hester takes Pearl for a walk in the woods
to meet Dimmesdale. While the two lovers talk and come up with plans to leave for
England, Pearl goes off and plays in the woods. After Hester and
Dimmesdale finish talking, Pearl returns and finds that her mother has removed the
scarlet letter. Pearl, who has grown attached to the A, throws a temper tantrum until
Hester puts the letter back on her dress. Later, Dimmesdale kisses Pearl, who then
runs to a brook and washes off the kiss. Pearl does not accept Dimmesdale as her
father. At the end of the novel, Hester and Pearl go to England, but Hester returns
and dies in Boston. Hawthorne never tells exactly what happened to Pearl. The

Harris County in the state of Texas was formed in the winter of 1836, and was first
called Harrisburg County after an early settler named John Richard Harris. The name
changed from Harrisburg County to Harris County in 1839. In the United States
House of Representatives, Ted Poe, a Republican, currently represents my district

States rights, the fight for the unborn and their right to life, and resistance to gun
legislation, tend to be some of the top issues for conservative Texas voters. The last
time a Democrat carried the state of Texas was in 1976, when Jimmy Carter won the
Presidential election. During the 2004 presidential election, then President and
Republican candidate, George W. Bush, won with 61.09% against 38.30% votes for
the Democratic candidate John Kerry. However, in the more recent Presidential
elections that were held in 2008 and in 2012, the very popular Democratic candidate,
Barack Obama, did not win the majority vote for Texas. Thus, looking at this
information, it can be said that the state of Texas tends to lean more towards the
Republican side.
