SCIENCE LABORATORY IS A FACILITY THAT PROVIDES
CONTROLLED CONDITIONS IN WHICH SCIENTIFIC OR
TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH , EXPERIMENTS AND
MEASUREMENTS MAY BE PERFORMED.
IT IS A SPECIAL FACILITY WHERE EXPERIMENTS ARE DONE AND
TYPICALLY CONTAINS EQUIPMENT , BEAKERS , BURNERS AND
OTHER TOOLS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE EXPERIMENTS.
• SPACIOUS
• FLEXIBILITY
• TEACHER SUPERVISION
• LOCATION
• LIGHT
• DEMONSTRATION TABLE
• FURNITURE
• FLOOR
• VENTILATION AND PLUMBING
THE PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION OF SCIENCE
LABORATORIES
SHOULD AIM AT DRAWING OUT THE BEST EDUCATIONAL
PURPOSES. THE FOLLOWING FACTORS SHOULD BE
CONSIDERED
AT PLANNING STAGE OF LABORATORIES –
THE NUMBER OF PUPILS WORKING AT A TIME.
THE MINIMUM SPACE NECESSARY FOR EACH PUPIL FOR
COMFORTABLE WORKING.
LIMITATION OF NUMBER OF SCIENCE
LABORATORIES IN
SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
DESIGNING THE SCIENCE CLASSROOM AND
LABORATORY FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH
CLASSES.
IMPERATIVE NEED FOR ECONOMY.
 LECTURE-ROOM-CUM-LABORATORY:
THIS PLAN WAS DEVISED BY DR.R.H. WHITEHOUSE OF CENTRAL
TRAINING COLLEGE. THE GENERAL PLAN HAS THE FOLLOWING
AREAS:
• DIMENSIONS
• WALLS AND FLOORS
• DOORS
• WINDOWS
• FURNISHING LECTURE ROOM
• LABORATORY ROOM
• WATER SUPPLY
ALL PURPOSE LABORATORY:
THIS TYPE OF LABORATORY SERVES THE PURPOSE OF BOTH
PRACTICAL AS
WELL AS THEORETICAL WORK. THE USUAL DIMENSION FOR
STUDENTS
NUMBERING 40 IS 45*25. THE ARRANGEMENT HAS A STORAGE
CUM
PREPARATION ROOM TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENTLY OF WORKING
AND
PRESERVING OF APPARATUS. THE SIDE BENCHES MAY BE
PROVIDED
WITH SINKS, WATER AND GAS CONNECTION. THE WHOLE ROOM
SHOULD
HAVE ALMIRAHS FITTED FOR STORAGE.
LECTURE CUM LABORATORY:
THIS WAS SUGGESTED BY THE PANEL FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION
IN 1964
THE OVERALL AIM OF A SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
SHOULD
BE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STIMULATING AND
INTERESTING ENVIRONMENT . THE FOLLOWING
POINTS
WILL HELP IN ORGANIZATION AND
ADMINISTRATION OF
A SCIENCE DEPARTMENT.
TIMETABLES - COMPILATION OF SCHOOL
TIMETABLE
STORAGE SYSTEM - LABELING
- ACCESSIBILITY
- SAFETY
- INDEXING AND RETRIEVAL
ANCILLARY STAFF
REQUISITIONING AND RECEIPT OF SUPPLIES
- CHOICE OF SUPPLIERS
- FINANCE
- SIZE OF SCIENCE
DEPARTMENT
- STORAGE
- KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY
OF THE TEACHER
AFTER THE RECEIPT OF THE APPARATUS, THE ARTICLES
SHOULD
BE PROPERLY CHECKED AND ENTERED IN THE STOCK
REGISTERS. A PROPER RECORD OF THE SCIENCE
APPARATUS IS
VERY IMPORTANT TO CHECK ANY ARTICLES AT ANY TIME.
THE TYPES OF REGISTERS ARE:
PERMANENT STOCK REGISTER
BREAKABLE STOCK REGISTER
CONSUMABLE STOCK REGISTER
ORDER REGISTER
ALL THE PAGES OF EVERY STOCK REGISTER SHOULD BE
NUMBERED.
ON THE OUTER COVER OF EACH REGISTER PARTICULARS
SUCH AS - NAME OF THE SCHOOL
- NAME OF THE REGISTER
- NUMBER OF THE VOLUME OF THE REGISTER
- TOTAL NUMBER OF PAGES
- DATES
ENTRIES IN EACH PORTION SHOULD BE MADE
ALPHABETICALLY
THE FIRST FEW PAGES OF THE REGISTER SHOULD
BE LEFT
BLANK FOR INDEX.
SUFFICIENT SPACE MUST BE LEFT BETWEEN THE
ENTRIES
TO FACILITATE ADDITIONS IN THEIR PROPER
PLACES.
BREAKAGE AND ITEMS CONSUMED SHOULD BE
ENTERED
IN THE COLUMN PROVIDED.
EVERY ITEM SHOULD BE DESIGNATED A FIXED PLACE.
REGISTERS SHOULD BE UPDATED REGULARLY.
REMAINING ITEMS SHOULD BE KEPT IN RACKS.
REAGENTS AND CHEMICALS IN FREQUENT USE SHOULD BE
KEPT IN WORKING TABLE RACKS.
ALL CHEMICALS SHOULD BE CLEARLY LABELED.
ALL THE CHEMICALS SHOULD BE CLEANED AFTER USE.
HOT APPARATUS SHOULD NOT BE KEPT ON PAINTED
SURFACES.
COLD APPARATUS SHOULD NOT BE HEATED
SUDDENLY.
IRON APPARATUS SHOULD BE GREASED
REGULARLY TO
PREVENT RUSTING.
WOODEN ITEMS SHOULD BE POLISHED
REGULARLY.
BRASS APPARATUS SHOULD BE POLISHED BY
BRASSO.
BREAKAGES SHOULD BE NOTED DOWN AT
ONCE.
THE CHEMICALS ON THE SHELVES , IN THE CUPBOARDS
SHOULD BE
GROUPED IN A SYSTEMATIC MANNER.
THE COMMONER CHEMICALS SHOULD BE ARRANGED SO
THAT ALL THE COMPOUNDS OF ONE ELEMENT ARE
PLACED TOGETHER.
 ALL THE ELEMENTS OXIDES, SULPHATES, CITRATES AND
OTHER
SIMILAR COMPOUNDS TOGETHER.
EVERY BOTTLE AND JAR SHOULD BE NUMBERED SO THAT
ANY
SUBSTANCE CAN BE LOCATED EASILY.
THE BOTTLES MUST BE REPLENISHED PERIODICALLY.
