Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The process of digesting food begins with chewing food as
saliva is added. Once food is sufficiently chewed, it is
transported down a long tube, the esophagus, until it
reaches the stomach.
5. Digesting food is a complex process that
involves a trip through many organs.

8. Chewed food and liquid moves through the throat, also
called the pharynx, and continues down the esophagus.
However, the wind pipe (trachea) also starts in the
throat and can present a problem of misdirection for the
food as it travels through the throat. What might
happen? Fortunately, a flap of tissue called the epiglottis
closes and prevents food or liquid from going down the
wrong pipe.
9. As the esophagus connects to the stomach, there is
another flap of tissue that allows food to pass into the
stomach but keeps stomach acids from backing up into the
lower esophagus. Some foods may cause the muscles
controlling this tissue to weaken and enable the stomach
acid to seriously damage the lining of the esophagus.

10. Stomach acids and special enzymes flow
from the sides of the stomach lining into
the stomach to help breakdown foods into
softer material called chyme.
11. What do you think is happening when your stomach growls? After
your food is turned into a soft material called chyme, it squeezes
through a passageway and enters the small intestine. Food
normally leaves the stomach in 20 to 45 minutes.
12. The small intestine is the next organ involved in digestion.
The small intestine is the size of your largest finger and
about 22 feet long. It enables nutrients in the soft chyme to
pass through the lining of the intestine and into the blood
stream which carries nutrients to our cells. It usually takes
about 8 hours for food to pass through the small intestine.
Why would it be a problem if an accident
created a tiny perforation of the intestine?
13. The small intestine has billions of bacteria
that are essential for proper functioning.
Using too many antibiotics can kill off
these important bacteria and lead to
serious digestive problems.
14. In fact, it is very healthy to eat foods that contain
probiotics that increase the number of bacterial
organisms in our intestinal tract.
15. Many illnesses can create serious problems in the
intestines. Irritable bowel syndrome and lactose
intolerance can make life very uncomfortable and painful.
16. After the small intestine has completed its work, the left over
material passes into the large intestine (colon) which is bigger
in diameter but less than two feet long. The job of the large
intestine is to remove liquid from the processed food and
send the undigested waste material to the anus for excretion
from the body.
17. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fiber can help
reduce the risk of dangerous diseases that threaten
the colon. Cancer of the colon is one of the most
deadly cancers facing Americans.
18. Another important organ of the digestive system
is the liver. It is located in the upper right
quadrant of the abdomen, below the diaphragm.
19. Next to the skin, the liver is the largest organ in
the body. It contains a vast network of blood
vessels and carries out the vital function of
detoxifying the blood stream. In addition, older
blood cells are removed from the blood stream.

20. The liver is where glucose is stored as glycogen and fats are converted
to high-density and low-density lipo proteins. It is also the place where
bile is formed and released into the intestine for excretion. It is the
most robust organ in the body. Damage to any portion of the liver is
regenerated and repaired for effective functioning. In fact, a liver
donor can give half of their liver to another person who needs a liver
transplant. The liver interacts closely with the small intestines.
21. The liver has many functions. It metabolizes or breaks down
nutrients from food to produce energy as needed by the body.
It also produces substances that regulate blood clotting. Why
is blooding clotting important?
22. The liver also serves as a factory for proteins and
cholesterol. In addition, this important organ provides
immunity against infection.
24. Too much alcohol consumption or drug use can result in
major liver damage. Cirrhosis of the liver usually results
in death if not stopped.
