School Magazine Evaluation

Working with existing forms and conventions
   Reworking the familiar
1. My school magazine relates to other existing school magazines because it has a similar
format to other school magazines that I looked at and it consisted of the same information.
2. In this project, I have used many conventions to do with design, mode of address and use of
imagery. As you can see, the use of imagery is different on both pages as they have been
laid out differently and positioned differently too. The design is similar to other school
magazines, but I have used a different approach compared to other people in the class.

3. We only did one magazine which was the school magazine and we had to do a lot of
research before making our final magazine. We first had to look at other school magazines
and base our idea on them and then produce a PowerPoint about what we will include on
each page and then had to present a layout and then present all this to the class. Finally, we
   uploaded everything onto Tumblr.
4. As I am part of the school football studies course, I missed a few lessons because of match
days therefore I was behind with classwork and had to make time afterschool or in my free
periods which I did do making sure that I caught up with everyone else.
5. I had to develop my ideas because my original idea was either too complicated or I wouldn’t
have been able to finish it as I was behind on work due to football games. Still photography
was hard for me as I took my pictures whilst the rest of the school was on break so it was
hard to get a clear picture. I had to edit my images by cropping them and changing the size
of them but it was slightly difficult as the pictures were stretched and blurred.

6. I organized my human resources very well because I knew exactly what to take pictures of
and asked nicely if it was okay for me to take a picture of certain people for my magazine. I
got a picture of a few boys from the football course that were happy for me to have their
picture in my magazine and the other pictures consisted of the 3G Turf and of the school and
some work the students had produced. (Artwork)
7. Managing the locations for photographs was easy because I didn’t have to position
people/things in a certain way so this was very easy.

8. I managed my time well by staying afterschool and going into private study sessions so that I
could catch up with work that I had miss due to be ill or having a football match. This helped
me to get back on track with my work and helped me to finish my work on time.

    Using Technology
    Creative Tools
9. The examples of Desk-Top Publishing I used in my project were Photoshop. This helped me
to extend my own creative control as I got the chance to use something I hadn’t before
used. At the start, I had no idea how to use it and wasn’t comfortable with it. However, after
being taught how to use it in afterschool sessions helped me to get used to it and now I feel
more comfortable with it and did well with it as I produced a good standard piece of work.
10. There wasn’t an example of a DTP that limited my chance of being creative with my work.

    Thinking about Audience
    Making Meaning
11. These ideas came naturally to me but by doing the questionnaire, it helped to improve my
ideas as the people I questioned, told me to do things in a different way and change the
colour and font to make it look better and more appealing to the readers.
12. They influenced my decision on the layout as they did tell me to lay the page out in a certain
way, but I preferred my idea which is why I stuck with that. I also got help from the teacher
as they had a better understanding and know what I have to do in order to get the highest
    mark.
13. Audience feedback helped me choose the right font and colour to use and it did confirm
expectations but some of the feedback did cause some surprise as I didn’t agree with some
things they said e.g. have a weekly magazine rather than a monthly magazine as it will be
too hard and complicated to do that.
14. My Media product uses conventions to advertise what will be inside the school magazine.
Kickers help as the reader will know what is inside the magazine and what they can look
forward to seeing. The masthead is clear to see as it stands out from the rest and I have a
main cover line story which also stands out from everything else.

15. My school magazine is really effective as it represents the school because it talks about
everything that is interesting about the school which won’t bore the readers. It is also
relevant to the readers as if they are stuck on where to go, they can easily find where to go
    after reading the magazine.

16. From the audience’s feedback, I have learn’t that their view is as important as mine and
their view can help to make my magazine look better. Also, it is them who will be buying the
magazine so they have a better understanding of it, even if I don’t like the way it looks.
