Introduction
 School health service is an important aspect of public
health.
 Studies have found that access to school health centers
increases the use of primary care , reduces use of
emergency rooms, and result in fewer
hospitalizations.(Kelly et al 2018). For over 40 yrs , the
growth of school health care services has evolved from
various public health needs to the development of a
specific collaborative model of care that is sensitive to the
unique needs of children and youth . School health care
services comprises of health care delivery by an
interdisciplinary team of health professionals .
 The age range of school children is within 6 - 14 yrs old.
Definitions of School Health and
School Health Services
School health refers to a state of complete physical, mental
and social well being and not merely the absence of disease
among students, teachers and other school
personnel(WHO,2006).
 School health care services refers to the model of care that
respond to unique physical and mental issues of pupils or
students, school teachers, and other personnel in the
school to promote, protect their health , prevent and
control diseases by offering care in an accessible and
youth friendly environment. (Samiera et al).
Objectives
 -The promotion of positive health
 -The prevention of disease
 -Early diagnosis, treatment and follow up of students
with health problems.
 -Awakening health consciousness in children
 -Ensure a healthy environment for children in school.
Features of a School Health
Centre
 Being located in schools or on school grounds
 Working within the school to become an integral part of the
school(victoria et al, 2011)
 Providing a comprehensive range of services that meet the
specific physical and behavioral health needs of the young
people in the community( victoria et al, 2011),
 Using a multidisciplinary team of providers to care for the
students, including nurse practitioners, registered nurses,
physician assistants, social workers, physicians, alcohol and
drug counselors, and other health professionals ( Victoria et al
2011)
Features of a School Health
Centre
 Providing clinical services through a qualified health provider, such
as a hospital, health department, or medical practice.(victoria et
al,2011)
 Requiring parents to sign written consents for their children to
receive the full scope of services provided at the school based
health centres.( Victoria et al, 2011)
 Having an advisory board consisting of community representatives,
parents, youth, and family organizations, to provide planning and
oversight.(Victoria et al, 2011)
 It Should not be located in a noisy environment
 It Should be centrally situated with fair distance from busy
roads,cinemas houses, factories, railway tracks, and market place.

services
 School children constitute a vital and substantial segment of population
 School children are vulnerable section of population by virtue of the
physical, mental , emotional, and social growth and development during
this period.
 School children are exposed to various stressful situations.
 Children coming to school belong to socioeconomic and cultural
background which affect health and nutritional status and require help
and guidance in promoting, protecting and maintaining their health and
nutritional status
 Children in school are prone to get specific Health problems

advantage of schooling.The diet should contain all the
nutrient in proper proportion, adequate for the
maintenance of optimum health.An ideal school health

Health Policy
The goals of the National School Health Policy include:
 Enhance the quality of health in school community
 Create an enabling environment for intersectoral
partnership in the promotion of child friendly school
environment, for teaching and learning and health
development.
 Provide necessary legal framework for mobilization of
support for the implementation of school health
programmes.
 Guide the provision of appropriate professional
services in schools by stakeholders for the
implementation of school health programme.
Goals of National School

 Promote the teaching of skill based health education
 Facilitate effective monitoring and evaluation of
school health programme
 Set up modalities for the sustainability of the school
health programme.
Challenges in running a
school health services .
 These are the most important challenges in running the
school health service
 Lack of funds: maintenance of health infrastructures
and payment of health personnel require money.
 Lack of infrastructures: such as first aid box and
equipments for screening, immunization etc are
important in implementation of school health service
Challenges
 Inadequate health personnel: in school health service, health
personnel must be available for proper running of school health
program.
 Friction between parents and school management: lack of cooperation
between the parents of the students and school management. It’s seen
mostly in private school.
