Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

◆ The headmaster shall act as Chairman of the
club.
◆ Two teachers from the school to lead the
programme as Earth Leaders Mentors
◆ Two children from each class (8 in total) will be
led by Earth Leaders to facilitate the activities in
each class.
◆ In Co-education schools, out of two children per
class as lead Earth Leaders there would be a boy
and girl student. The teachers should select the
earth leaders in the classroom in the democratic
way based on their interest and enthusiasm.

◆ All children of classes 6th to 9th will be
the Earth Leaders of The Earth Club.
◆ The Earth Club activities will spread over
the academic year from June to February of
the academic year. i,e about 9 months in an
academic year.
◆ The Earth club leaders (8 +2 members)
shall conduct monthly meetings preferably
on the first Saturday or on the Bala Sabha
day and a total number of meetings are 9 in
number in an academic year i.e., from June
to February. The mentors to support earth
leaders to conduct the monthly meetings.
5. Earth Club Structure
and Functions
◆ A list of activities to be conducted to improve
the climate and environment is given in this
handbook. The club will select the activities for
each class in presence of teachers to conduct
during the academic year.
◆ The teachers and club leaders guide the
classroom to implement the activities through
the children in the school.
◆ The activities of the club may be conducted
during the periods such as: co curricular period
art and craft, value education and life skills or
during before and after school hours as per
their convenience. It can be four periods per
month and a total of 36 periods in the year.
Each period spans 45 minutes to an hour.

◆ A newsletter will be published with the
activities of the Earth Clubs of various
schools. The hard copies will be circulated to
the schools in a limited number. E-copies will
be made available to all other schools and
educational institutions.
◆ The Earth club activities will be presented
and displayed at District, State and National
level meets i.e., National Science day,
Science fairs, etc.
◆ The Earth leaders doing excellent work in
their school shall be considered for exposure
visits to within and outside the state.

◆ A display board will be arranged in every school
where children can display their works and
collections on the display board, such as children’s
writings on environment in the form of poems,
narratives, drawings and newspaper cuttings from
the local newspapers, magazines related to
environment and climate change. They can display
earth club activities and earth news. These displays
shall be kept for one or two weeks and will be
removed and kept in the school library in the form
of booklets.
◆ The clubs shall endeavour to share
environmental and nature related news during
school assembly / prayer time.

◆ The club shall implement a calendar of events and
must observe 3 to 4 important environmental days.

topics such as formation and strengthening of Earth

activities for each class based on the handbook and
annual calendar prepared.

Work closely with Earth Club members from respective classes in
conducting regular meetings, motivating members and supporting
mentors in conducting activities as per annual calendar.

Based on this handbook earth clubs in each school should
adopt the following strategies for implementation.
Type of strategies – Class wise / school wise
» Performing the activities such as planting the trees, compost
pits, water recharging pits, maintaining school garden / kitchen
garden, preparing biodiversity registers.
» Demonstration of good habits, which are pro environmental
» Hands on experience – Children engage in the work such as
watering the plants, maintaining the garden and other
activities.
» Adaptation and practice – adopting certain trees at school
and in the community.
» Discussion and debate – special debates pm the topics within
the class or as whole school activity on the topics related to
topic change and role of the students to address it. (Certain
topics and issues given in the handbook).
16. Nature of Activities
» Assembly time sharing – talk on environmental related issues
as one of the important item in the school assembly.
» Display board – Every school must maintain a display board
where children display their works such as poem, story, drawing
and painting, paper cuttings from newspapers on
environmental issues, etc.
» Balasabha – The earth club activities must reflect in every
Bala Sabha meeting. Small skits on environment degradation in
this impact, sharing group case studies and practices, singing
poems, stories, sharing good practices, sharing feeling of
maintaining and planting trees and gardens, etc. which are
relevant to YELP
