Unit G321: Foundation Portfolio in Media Studies
Schedule
Week Beginning Work Completed
Summer Holidays Initially I was given the task to research several musicmagazines with varying
genres.
Monday 8th September After researching existing music magazines, I chose my magazine of
inspirations which is Q magazine and I annotated the front cover by
pointing out the codes and conventions.
Monday 15th September I learned about Katz and Maslow’s theory. Also I learned the different
shot types which are used for the main models on front covers of
magazines.
Monday 22rd September I created an audience profile so that I know what type of magazine to
create and who it should be targeted towards.
Monday 29th September I began by creating a rough, hand drawn draft of what my
preliminary task would look like while looking at existing media
products. I also had to brainstorm possible magazine names.
Monday 6th October On this day I began creating my preliminary task by using Photoshop
and I had to familiarize myself with the basic tools so that I could
meet the deadline.
Monday 13th October I continued with completing my preliminary task, making sure I
included the codes and conventions that made it more professional.
Monday 20st October I completed the front cover of my preliminary task and included all
the necessary codes and conventions that are conventional to
magazines.
Half Term
Monday 3th November Since the deadline was nearing, I had to complete the contents page
for the preliminary task as quick as possible but the standard also
has to be comparable to other magazines.
Monday 10th November To efficiently complete the contents page, I duplicated layers from
my front cover such as the masthead and social media links to save
production time.
Monday 17th November I completed my preliminary task and received feedback from my
peers as well as my teacher. I then improved my preliminary task
based on the feedback.
Monday 24th November On this lesson we studied about the exam.
Monday 1nd December I moved onto the main task and I created a brainstorm of possible
mastheads and I decided to use the same name I used in my
preliminary task (VASV) since it has a personal meaning to it. Similar
to the preliminary task, I created hand drawn drafts as a guideline
which has been influenced by my magazine of inspiration which is Q
magazine.
Monday 8th December I was able to complete my front cover music magazine on the 13th of
December by staying behind after school and continuing with my
work during my free time. At this point I was knowledgeable about
more Photoshop skills so I decided to upgrade the quality by editing
the main image to make it more appealing.
Monday 15th December On this day we studied about the exam, continuing from the last
session.
Christmas Holidays
Monday 5th January Since the deadline was coming up, I quickly began my contents page.
I duplicated codes and conventions from the front cover such as the
masthead and incorporated cover lines as well as the main image to
take up the majority of the page. I added social media links as well as
an editorial so the consumer is informed of who the editor is.
Monday 12th January By completing my first contents page, I created the basic layout of my
second contents page which is conventional to Q magazine which
also has two contents pages. I imitated the same layout from my first
contents page to show continuity. This was important as it showed
evidence of the ‘repetition’ theory I have learned about that day from
Steve Neale.
Monday 19th January I finished my second contents page by incorporating a sub-image as
well as adding page numbers alongside each cover line which was
more convenient for the reader. I also started creating my double
page spread after school.
Monday 9th February By following the general layout of the hand drawn draft, I placed the
main image in the top right corner of the page since the main image
was also located there in my magazine of inspiration. I used
guidelines to construct the interview, making the page look more
organized and structured.
Monday 16th February After completing my double page spread and altering the pages
based on feedback, I created a slideshare account so that I could
upload my log book presentation. After this I added the basic
headlines and sub-headings as well as choosing a theme to make the
page more interesting.
Monday 23 February Since I completed all the content that I needed to upload onto my
blog, I began to upload the images as well as any slideshare
presentations while creating a descriptive paragraph for each,
explaining each image, making sure they are developed and
coherent. I also added the evaluation factors such as the YouTube
hyperlinks for my audience feedback.
Monday 2nd March Lastly, I finalized my blog by proof-reading the content and making
adjustments to improve my blog to make sure I have produced a
WordPress blog which will allow me to achieve a high grade.
