Samuel Johnson lived between 1709 - 1784  Suffered from a variety of diseases as a child, causing him to deal with much physical and emotional pain   Still showed signs of intelligence, but did not have the same opportunities as others due to financial wreck     Spent a year at Pembroke College in Oxford Worked as a teacher and servant, though he hated both jobs  Made many periodical essays; the equivalent of today's magazine or newspaper                         "A cucumber should be well-sliced, dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out. Johnson's Time Period Started writing in 1737, after being a teacher  His earliest works include  The Life of Richard Savage ,  The Vanity of Human Wishes ,  London ,  Irene Johnson's  Dictionary of the English Language  was mad in 1755 and effected modern English and often referred to as the first English dictionary   Some of his best known work was Messiah , The Adventurer, The Rambler, and On Spring Influenced society's writing during his time period and after, even to this day because of his early forms of biographies, literary criticism, and other works
