The Visual Recognition Of Image Patterns
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background to the Study
As a scientific discipline, computer vision is concerned with the extraction of information from
images to be employed in a decision making process. The image data can take many forms, such as
video sequences, still images, digitized maps, diagrams and sketches. These images may be in colour
format, grey scale or in binary format. The common approach is to extract characteristic features from
the image either in the spatial domain or in some suitable transform domain. Whether the goal is
classification or recognition, a measure of similarity or distance must be formulated and the success
rate of the system evaluated. Some of the application areas of computer vision are:
1.1.1. Robotics
The visual recognition of image patterns is a fundamental human attribute that uses the eye as a sensor
and dedicated parts of the brain as the decision making processor. The visual recognition enables
humans to perform a variety of tasks such as target identification, ease of movement, handling tools,
communication among others. Advances in sensing and visual perception techniques have enabled
some of these attributes to be transferred to robots. For example, identification of colour is a useful
asset in a robot in an industrial automation process that involves sorting. [1], [2], [3]
1.1.2. Industrial Inspection
Industrial inspection is an area in which pattern recognition is of importance. A pattern recognition
system captures images

How Workplace Is An Essential Part Of Professional Life
Modern workplace is a specific and highly changeable sphere where the interests of employees and
employers are highly interconnected and opposed at the same time. Workplace management has
become an important part of any organizations life, especially during the last decades, when people
have been recognized by different management theories as the greatest assets of an organization.
Dealing with people, making them develop and learn, making them follow the planned agenda and
achieving something with the help of others have always been among the most important character
features of professional business and political lives. Although the simplest definition of management
as, Montana and Charnov (2008) defines it, is a working with and ... Show more content on

However, the case study lack details about the acceptance of those changed practices by other
employees and, what is more important, employers.
II. History of Management and Workplace Learning. Theories and Concepts. Although a great number
of managerial practices have been used through the centuries of human development, they were rarely
investigated and conceptualized. However, it is clear that such important organizations as the Church
or the ancient armies were based on particular practices and concepts. The history of management
normally starts with the Industrial Revolution and the following mass production that changed the face
of the businesses and the world in general.
Each stage of the management theories development brought new ideas about the nature of an
organization, the place and importance of the workplace learning. One of the oldest theories of
management is the Scientific Management theory developed by Frederick Taylor, who tried to develop
the standards of organizations and their tasks. It is followed by the Bureaucratic Management Theory
suggested by Max Weber. This theory mostly concentrated on the types of organizations and the
hierarchy of organizational tasks and responsibilities.
These two theories compile the period, widely known today as a traditional management, where the

Johnson Johnson Diversity Plan
Johnson Johnson was formed in 1885 in Brunswick, New Jersey, after two brothers, James Wood and
Edward Mead Johnson saw a need to develop sterile supplies for surgical procedures. During that
time, doctors operated without gloves, sterile equipment and used unclean cotton from textile mills to
pack the wounds so the mortality rate for surgical patients was very high. One of the first products
Johnson Johnson developed was ready to use surgical dressings which to led to large reduction in
surgical mortality rates. Johnson Johnson continued developing and expanding their product line and
their company. In 1919, Johnson Johnson began their first international expansion. The brothers first

Fostering the growth of these federal contractors as viable businesses, for the long term, helps to

company attempts to enhance its image both in the US and around the world is through the
development of Standards for Responsible External Manufacturing. These were developed to ensure
the companies who do business with the company meet the same high standards of ethical behavior,
product quality, and social responsibility practiced by J J. There has to be common commitment
to:comply with applicable legal requirements, behave ethically and with integrity, integrate quality into
business processes, treat people with dignity and respect, promote the safety, health and well being of
employees, operate in an environmentally responsible manner, andimplement management systems to
ensure ongoing performance and continual improvement (J J, 2006)These values and practices are
determined through a vigorous benchmarking process for which any potential manufacturing partner

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Diagnostic Imaging
INTRODUCTION
Modern medicine has undergone major advancements over the past years. One of these developments
include the capacity to retrieve crucial information about the human body and its health beyond the
use of manual diagnostic techniques. This is referred to as Medical or Diagnostic Imaging.
Medical or Diagnostic Imaging refers to the various techniques that can be used to see inside the
human body. Its non invasive nature means that the body does not have to be opened up surgically for
medical practitioners to view the organs anatomically. In clinical settings, it can be used to aid in the
diagnosis or treatment of different ailments. Many kinds of medical imaging techniques have already
been developed, each with their own advantages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Early diagnosis provided by its sophisticated technology saves countless patient lives, and without its
help, we wouldn t have been able to develop cures or treatments for many diseases. Its ability to
monitor subtle changes in patients that would otherwise be missed by unassisted human eyes is also a
hallmark of modern clinical practice.
The radiograph, one of the most common diagnostic imaging tools utilized in this field, possesses a
very important component called contrast. Contrast helps radiologists perceive image detail and glean
information from the area of interest. Radiation Technologists, or Rad Techs, should always ensure
that radiographs have the right amount of contrast so that the radiologist can easily read them for
faster diagnosis.
In terms of education, enormous equipment and expensive yet high quality machines have always
surrounded the College of Medical Radiation Technology (or CMRT). However, it is not just about the
cost but also about their effectiveness and usefulness for the CMRT students. With these machines,
students get to have hands on activities that prepare them for when they take their internship in
hospitals and as future health

Spanking A Child
The topic of should you spank your child has been a hot button topic recently in the U.S. While many
Parents support the idea, some parents on the other hand are against the idea. In this thread, I will be
stating my opinion on spanking a child. Why or why not? I will also be state weather or not the U.S
should ban spanking, like many European countries have done.
To start what is my position on spanking a child? While many parents tend to agree with the idea of
spanking, I myself do not agree with the concept. My reason for this is because many adults say that
spanking is a form of discipline. Well if we take a look at the word discipline, it stems from the word
disciple, which means to teach. So based on that, what is it that you are ... Show more content on

One of those means can be embarrassment. At the ages of 10 to 18 years old it s all about image for a
child. A child wants to fit in so bad that if a parent do something to disrupt that image it s mental, it s
emotional, and depending on what you did it can be physical. Meaning you don t have to hit a child to
get your point across, and all parents do it. Embarrassing a child is a rite of passage as a parent as well
as a tool that is 100 percent legal. Now, should the U.S put a ban on spanking a child? My answer for
that is no. My reason for this is because as a parent, there isn t a book on parenting, you are pretty
much making it up as you go, and if you believe that spanking is the right thing to do. Then it shouldn
t be up to the government to tell you how to parent. However, if you are hitting a child to an extensive
degree causing physical marks that look 50 shades of purple, or leaving laceration marks from a
switch, then you are clearly abusing a child and should be punished accordingly.
Now would a law preventing spanking interfere with parenting decisions? Yes and no. What I mean by
this is if you pass a law like this not all parents will comply, and be willing to learn new parenting
techniques, while the parents who are willing to learn will not be affected because they are still finding
ways to discipline their

Research Paper On Mexico Sandals
The Mexican people are becoming more and more sensitive to obesity with the government not only
encouraging the citizens to eat well (eat fresh foods) but also encouraging the population to stay in
shape (regular exercise). The Mexican women and men especially in the lower age groups the need to
exercise regularly. When it comes to purchasing shoes, or any kind of footwear, price, durability and
flexibility are some of the things that a person considers. Most Mexicans, though increasing in the
middle class, are still not so well financially endowed to be in the position of the American consumer
purchasing power. Thus they are especially not able to buy so many shoes (in average 2.5 pairs) as the
average American does (men an average of 12 pairs, women an average of 27). But an all in one shoe
could be the perfect match for an Mexican; a shoe that you can wear to a party, a casual meeting, a
walk around the city, for yoga, gym, jogging, hiking, other water sports and in the weekends. You will
be fashionable (sandals are always are) and athletic. Think of jogging from church, running through

Thatcher, come off with an idea and he designed a thong shaped sandal with a nylon ankle strap. That
might sound not much of a invention but Thatcher patented his invention and found a company that
could manufacture the sandal. For the first one year he sold only 200 pairs, but the design had some
minor faults, when worn people developed blisters between the first and the second toes due to thong

The Beat Generation Essay
The one thing that we yearn for in our living days, that makes us sigh and groan and undergo sweet
nauseas of all kinds, is the remembrance of some lost bliss that was probably experienced in the womb
and can only be reproduced (though we hate to admit it) in death. (Kerouac, Jack. On the road. ). This
quote, from Jack Kerouac s book On the Road, is a brilliant example of the overall feel of the Beat
Generation. Jack Kerouac is one of the most influential writers of the Beat Generation, rivaled only by
the likes of Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burrough. But what exactly is the Beat Generation? What
does it mean? Who of note was involved? When did it take place? The Beat Generation is a play on

(Jack Kerouac). As a result of his upbringing, Kerouac was not a native English speaker; he actually
did not learn English until the age of six (Jack Kerouac). Kerouac experienced tragedy at a dreadfully
young age, his older brother Gerard died of rheumatic fever when he was four years old (Jack
Kerouac). Kerouac and Gerard had grown close during Gerard s illness, and Gerard s death left
Kerouac feeling exceptionally lost. But the lessons Kerouac learned from Gerard s death would stay

Social Classes In The 19th Century
If the lower classes are not controlled it will be hard to maintain the social structure and prevent
internal conflict. In most societies throughout World History, a small, rich ruling class has dominated
the social and political aspects of society. The large majority of the population has always been in the
lower classes of society, and controlling these classes through fear, brute force, economic oppression
or appeasement is instrumental to maintain order. Failing to maintain control often leads revolts, social
upheavals or violent class struggles. While in most societies the upper classes attempted to control
lower classes, some were not successful. In the Roman Empire slaves were subjected to difficult work

started the Russian Revolution. In these cases, those with power and wealth, failed to satisfy or control
the masses of lower class people which led to revolts and unrest. In other instances, civil order was

Brutality in Algeria Essay
In Algeria, an African country, there is a civil war raging. The radicles are ruthless and will do
anything to ensure their victory. Their ultimate goal is to take over the country, to rule it on their own
(Hafez). They were ruthless and heartless and did not care who got in their way. This country has been
struggling to maintain civilization to no prevail. This country has been struggling for quite some time
now it is about time for it to pull itself back together and regroup. If it does not the results could
possibly be catastrophic. The country could fall to the radicles and become a total anarchy. Meaning
there is no government and everyone lives with their own rules. During this civil war the government

This indicated that the radicles were afraid of smart women. Being smart is to be powerful and that is
the opposite of what these terrorist wanted. One woman was speaking out against women being
treated differently and her father was killed that way she had to suffer. Life for women is rough in
Algeria due to them being in this war with the radicle Islamics. The women are much weaker than the
men therefore they believe that women cannot do the same thing that they do, which is where most of
the sexism comes from.During the war women played parts in mostly helping out the troops, also
another reason they were targeted. Women are equal to men regardless of what is said. Most countries
are past this chapter in history and women are not totally equal, but a lot closer than this one. The
women are beaten for not complying with request. Forced to be sex slaves to the radicles they are
captured by. Also being killed for being intelligent or being powerful as well as speaking out against
these crimes. After their capture the radicles work them like dogs doing whatever they ask and when
they are done they either release them or kill them depending on how well they complied. Sometimes
the radicles did not even give the women a chance they simply killed them out of cold blood, just
because they could. The sexism was so bad that some men wouldn t let their wives go outside for fear
of them being snatched up and killed. Along with sexism in Algeria the government is not

Pennell s Argument Analysis
After reading this issue, and making some research in the subject, I believe that this is not an opinion
article. The writer, Jay Pennell, did not state his position about the race and the NASCAR restart rules.
In fact, he just gave an overview of what happened at Talladega Superspeedway. So, he cited the
drivers opinions and comments about the race, and described what happened. It is, indeed, a
controversial issue but Pennel did not give his opinion. My general feeling about this issue is that this
problem seems to be something that has occurred before. It was not the first time that a botched restart
affected the outcome of the race. As a consequence, on October 20th, the NASCAR made changes on
the rules to reduce to one attempt instead of the customary three tries at a green white checkered
finish. I believe that Chamerond used the precise language and vocabulary. I am not familiarized with
this subject but Chamerond seems to have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, it is a subject that he is confident about. He used the proper vocabulary and he asked questions and
presented a critical thinking. For example, in the following passage, Chamerond presented an
argument and gave space for discussion: The big question was? With all the information that
NASCAR have regarding restarts on races. How is it that this keeps happening at different times
during this NASCAR season? Also, why hasn t this been addressed some time ago and will it be
address now! On the other hand, I believe that one weakness is that he talked about the issue like
everyone knows about NASCAR. When I first read it, I did not understand the article so much
because I am not familiarized with the subject. So, I had to make some research to fully understand it.
That is why, I believe that you have to talk to your reader like he or she does not have any idea of your
topic. Chamerond could found a way to explain a little bit more about the restart process and the

The Characterization of Miss Brill in Miss Brill by...
In the Bedford Introduction to Literature, Characterization is defined as ... the process by which a
writer makes that character seem real to the reader (2126). In order to do this a writer has multiple
tools at their disposal that add to the depth of a character and simplify roles in a story. This includes
the use of Protagonists and Antagonists, static and dynamic characters, showing and telling, and
motivated and plausible action, as well as many others. The short story Miss Brill by Katherine
Mansfield is no exception to this and displays the main character of Miss Brill as the protagonist, who
is confronted with the reality of her existence.
In order to bring us closer to Miss Brill, Mansfield uses the technique of showing, by ... Show more

This is also a nice example of the fore mentioned method of showing, allowing the reader to draw the
conclusion of the situation alone.
One of the most vital elements of the story though is the classification of Miss Brill as a dynamic
character. Being a dynamic character entail that the knowledge about the character grows and that
some kind of change takes place because of the action occurring in the plot. In Miss Brill this hinges
on the fact that Miss Brill spends her time alone, with almost no actual human contact. Her only
means of living life is through that of those around her, she watches their actions, listens to their
conversations and acts like a hidden parasite, drawing her own meaning in life by observing others, or
as she put it ... there was always the crowd to watch (Mansfield 259).
The tragedy of the story rests in that she does not see herself as this. She describes some of the other
people in the park as ... they were nearly always the same, Sunday after Sunday, and Miss Brill had
often noticed there was something funny about nearly all of them. They were odd, silent, nearly all
old, and from the way they stared they looked as though they d come just come from dark little rooms
or even even cupboards! (Mansfield 259), this is exactly what she is. Not only does this

Inflation and Deflation
I
INTRODUCTION
Inflation and Deflation, in economics, terms used to describe, respectively, a decline or an increase in
the value of money, in relation to the goods and services it will buy. Inflation is the pervasive and
sustained rise in the aggregate level of prices measured by an index of the cost of various goods and
services. Repetitive price increases erode the purchasing power of money and other financial assets
with fixed values, creating serious economic distortions and uncertainty. Inflation results when actual
economic pressures and anticipation of future developments cause the demand for goods and services
to exceed the supply available ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This differs from the CPI in that price subsidization, profits, and taxes may cause the amount received
by the producer to differ from what the consumer paid. There is also typically a delay between an
increase in the PPI and any eventual increase in the CPI. Producer price index measures the pressure
being put on producers by the costs of their raw materials. This could be passed on to consumers, or it
could be absorbed by profits, or offset by increasing productivity. In India and the United States, an
earlier version of the PPI was called the Wholesale Price Index. Commodity price indices, which
measure the price of a selection of commodities. In the present commodity price indices are weighted
by the relative importance of the components to the all in cost of an employee. Core price indices:
because food and oil prices can change quickly due to changes in supply and demand conditions in the
food and oil markets, it can be difficult to detect the long run trend in price levels when those prices
are included. Therefore most statistical agencies also report a measure of core inflation , which
removes the most volatile components (such as food and oil) from a broad price index like the CPI.
Because core inflation is less affected by short run supply and demand conditions in specific markets,
central banks rely on it to better measure the inflationary impact of current monetary

Piet Mondrian Essay
What gave me the most clarity when coming to designing horizontals and verticals, was the paintings
by Piet Mondrian, the way in which it is laid out is similar to the way in which we plan our lives, our
goals and dreams. It goes in only two directions, up down and left right. Within the painting there are
blocks of different sizes and colours, black lines and lastly white blocks.
The black blocks, to me, represent a strong idea or notion. Which in a building could represent the
border between private and public.
The moments of colour are where events occur, different events of different functions and outcomes.

to the goal as the goal is itself, and just because it s not a milestone doesn t mean one should not
embrace that moment, specifically when one talks about people aiming to get on the right track, every
small step is a breakthrough. These spaces, where one would think are bland and aimless yet are
actually celebrated; in my design are the physical therapy corridor and the waiting areas.
The physical therapy corridor As the physical therapy corridor is in the environment of the body, and
in aid of the body, the corridor is the space that prepares your body for the healing it will undergo. To
support this preparation, elements are added to the design that will make you more aware of the body.
Such as a wooden frame box, that makes every step a prominent one, and adds a texture that is not
cold or sterile, but rather warm and forgiving. The use of wood is also a reference to the body, adding
a more human element than that that concrete or white clinical walls can provide.
Lights and rough concrete also add to tactile senses by adding layer upon layer of interest, creating an
anchor for the body, one that draws the body in, instead of repelling it as most hospital corridors

The Depletion Of The Natural Resources
In the past recent years, the depletion of the natural resources has become the area of major attention
throughout the world. These resources include the fossil fuels, minerals, natural vegetation, animals,
air, water, sunlight, soil, etc. The rate of its consumption is increasing day by day. This ultimately
leads to the ceasing of the resources to the earth s crust. The rising demand of these resources has led
to a limited supply of these resources which has serious impacts to environmental damages like air
pollution, water pollution, soil pollution and the depletion of the ozone layer. Thus, there is an urgent
need for mainly the industries to find an alternative approach reducing its unwanted effect on the
environment.
Manufacturing plays a very important role in an organization particularly to build competitive benefit
and improve performance. Manufacturers have been neglecting their social environmental
responsibility and have focused too much on their profits. The minimization of waste and pollution
produced can be achieved by product and process designing. Green manufacturing is an emerging
field as a solution taken by the industries in the recent years.
Green manufacturing can broadly be defined as the technology used in a manufacturing process that
finds a smarter way to use the limited resources, both in manufacturing the material and in the energy
used in the process. This is achieved by reducing the waste and pollution by re defining the present
production

Billy Budd Analysis
Billy Budd is the story of the sailor Billy Budd and his time on the H.M.S Bellipotent during the last
decade of the 18th century, after being impressed from the previous ship he was on The Rights of Man
. He was seen as a handsome sailor , and was loved by his old crew. He was also innocent to a fault.
This man could not see the bad or suspicious in someone at all. In the context of this novel, he was the
purest good in this ship, which could also be seen as a microcosm of the world as it was. Billy as a
whole is seen mainly as a man without fault. He could do no wrong in his world, because he is the
personification of all that is good. This makes his one flaw, that being his stutter, the perfect aspect of
his being to show us of the dangers of innocence. The fact that he cannot bring words out to defend
himself against the malice tossed at him because his very being will not allow him to even
comprehend that there are people in the world with such ill intent. Ill intent does not exist to him, and
it ultimately proved to be his undoing. As if almost a flip of a coin, Claggart can be seen as the
complete opposite than that of Billy. An ugly man, in both the figurative and literal sense, Claggart s
innate malice is without cause or limit. While Billy lacks the awareness of the differences of human
actions and the intentions behind them, Claggart knows these differences all too well. He has a great
understanding of deception and ambiguity that he uses to hide his real

to be. Women post pictures on the internet while they have on their nicest clothing, have their hair
perfectly styled, have on a full face of makeup, and have a big, alluring smile on their face. People
will scroll past the woman s picture and assume that the woman has glamourous life. In reality, they
are unaware that the woman is pretending to be perfect. Every female is naturally born with flaws. If
humanity showed recognition to the women who are satisfied with being themselves then, more
women will feel content to accept who they are. The woman behind the picture is in distress. The artist
is concerned with the number of women who are in despair but, portraying that they are fine. He
painted this artwork to convince us that the women in social media are deceiving society, although
they can not delude themselves. Archilles is incredibly knowledgeable, he is aware of the truth behind
social media. He is not blinded by the fraud pictures that society wants everyone to see, but sees
things for what they really are. He is convincing us to look past the pictures and realize that these
women are hurting. The woman on the picturing who is suffering connects with the women in life who
aren t happy with themselves and feel hopeless, drained, and emotionally dead. The artist is biased
about which genders are suffering, both sex can me miserable and not show it. Therefore, when you
see someone on social media that is smiling, happily do not assume that their life is perfect. The artist
presents a clear message, throughout this artwork, that women in social media are only pretending that

Yup In Jail
Many people have things that mean a lot to them and would hurt if they were ever to lose that
something. Well what I hold dear to me is just two pieces of paper. Yup, just paper. I know what you re
thinking how can paper mean so much to me. Well it isn t the paper itself that makes it so special it s
what s on it. Those pieces of paper contain words and a drawing that my father did for me when he
was in jail. He still is in fact in jail so that s why it means so much. Me and my father are rather close
so when I heard that he was in jail it hurt. So when the letter got in the mail you bet I got excited. I
didn t exactly know how to read it when I first opened it. I know how can i not be able to read it, well
the reason for that is because it was in Spanish and I don t really know how to read it. So instead I got
my mom to read it to me. He wrote about how he was doing and how it was being in there. I really
liked reading it because it let me know he was doing okay. Now the letter itself was written on a blank

Maybe it s because it was from my dad and I don t want anything to happen to it. Or maybe it s
because I just want to keep it to myself. Either way I don t think I would want to share it with anyone.
It s something that I would consider private. And I know most people don t really have anything that
they consider valuable, but I do. And that just happens to be this letter and drawing. Maybe that s why
these two pieces of paper are so important to me. Not just because they were given to me from my
dad, even if it is one of the reasons. I think it s because it s the only thing that I have that belonged to
my dad.And knowing that i won t see him for a long time and that he s so far away from me right now
I guess it s something that can keep me close to him. I know it sounds stupid and maybe it even is. But

Difference Between Inclusion And IEA
The difference with inclusion and IDEA is that inclusion is based on a philosophy to include the social
aspect of education for children with disability. IDEA is focused on the Least Restrictive
Environment. LRE is a legal term created by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Inclusion and IDEA provide the child with a plan of services called the Individualized Education
Program or IEP s. IEP s are special education and related services that meet the needs of the child in
the Least Restrictive Environment. A child being placed in the LRE, is in no way the same as
inclusion although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Inclusive education happens when
children with and without disabilities participate and learn

The Italian Resistance Movement
The Italian resistance movement also knows as Resistenza or Movimento Partigiano, had a crucial
impact on World War II final results. The movement has been active approximately since September 8
1943, also known as Armistice day, until the very beginning of May 1945.
The born of the Italian resistance is due to the popular insurrection: Italian people realized where
Fascism and Nazism was driving their country and the whole world and decided to revenge the
national pride. At first people coming from monarchy and anti fascist groups joined the movement but
the number of supporters increased exponentially in the next few years. Civil people didn t have
experience or good military strategy at the beginning so they learn how to fight at their experience
with hundreds loses. They organized them forces in little armed groups spread in the countryside and
woods; insurrections in the factories and surprise attacks. their main goal was catch up the national
insurgent that they will achieve in a couple of year of hard, bloody work. During this period Italy was

a new government driven by a liberal man, Ivanoe Bonomi; this policy shift has been crucial in the

Loss Of Happiness In The Tin Flute, By Gabrielle Roy
When people have a chance at being happy they throw everything they have into that opportunity
because they do not want it to pass by them and live the rest of their life wondering what if. That is
what Florentine was battling with in The Tin Flute. She does not know if she should follow Jean and
see the movie with him or let him pass her by. Florentine is almost afraid to say no because she wants
this chance at happiness. In The Tin Flute by Gabrielle Roy the reader should learn that people can
throw everything they have into a chance at happiness because they are afraid of what may happen if
they let it pass.
Florentine is torn between whether or not to go with Jean Lévesque and leave her current life behind.
While working at her job in a diner she is approached by a man who wants to take her out and
Florentine is not sure if she should follow him or let him leave. After taking a rest from her job and
thinking about her life and what she might become she decides that she must immediately stake
everything she has to offer, on one wild chance of happiness. Florentine knows that what she is
thinking about doing is crazy and that most people would not follow a man they knew almost nothing
about to the movies but she wants to take that chance because ... Show more content on

Similarities Between Judicial Activism And Strict...
The Supreme Court is made up of many justices that believe in two different judicial philosophies.
These two philosophies are that of judicial activism and strict constructionism. These philosophies
differ quite a bit from one another, but they both work toward the same main goal. Both philosophies
play a part in court cases when it comes to deciding on a final ruling. Judicial activism is a judicial
philosophy that states that a court has the right to, and should go beyond what is stated in the
Constitution about an issue that is being brought up and look towards broader suggestions of the
impending decision on said issue. Basically, the court strikes down a law and then makes a statement
that [may] change a law or policy in a significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this case the Supreme Court determined that Texas law criminalizing, or essentially trying to outlaw
abortion was unconstitutional. Strict Constructionism, on the other hand, is a distinct legal philosophy
that limits or controls some judicial interpretation. A judge who uses strict constructionism, may reject
the use of legislative history when constructing law because whatever a particular legislator may have
said while on the floor of congress does not necessarily reflect what was put into law (Stankiewicz) .
Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court is probably one of the most we ll know users of strict
constructionism. In essence, he believes that the Constitution should only ever be interpreted the way
it was written never any different. Scalia also believes that the Constitution should not be susceptible
to any form of updating by any court. In 2015 the Supreme Court ruled on a case about same sex
marriage, Obergfell v. Hodges. The final ruling (holding) of the case, stated by SCOTUSBlog, the
fourteenth amendment requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and
also to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully
licensed and performed

A Personal Philosophy of Education
A personal philosophy of education serves to unify the experience of teaching for the individual. It
provides our students with a professional that understands the context of learning from which their
classroom stems. It also ensures a personal sense of growth: a lifelong process valued by the
profession as a whole. I have combined beliefs from pedagogical, ethical and personally developed
ideas I intend to use as a foundation in creating a nurturing classroom environment. Education could
be defined ad infinitum, but for the purposes of synchronicity I have organized my beliefs in terms of
four elements: enculturation, potential, inspiration and development. The meeting point of these ideas
is the philosophical ideology of existentialist education. As defined by Dr. V.K. Maheshwari (2011),
the origin of existentialism: rejects the existence of any source of objective, authoritative truth about
metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. Instead, individuals are responsible for determining for
themselves what is true or false, right or wrong, beautiful or ugly. For the existentialist, there exists no
universal form of human nature; each of us has the free will to develop as we see fit. The focus is
entirely student centered, whereas the teacher serves as a guide seeking to educate the whole person.
The goal of such a classroom is to develop a thoughtful, creative, self actualizing adult capable of
rational thought, effective communication and independent

The Yellow Ribbon By Pete Hamill
Memories can last a life time, so we tend to only remember the extraordinary ones. Extraordinary like
the essay The Yellow Ribbon by Pete Hamill, in which he talks about how a person named Vingo, was
riding on a, bus recently released from jail, to this oak tree explaining to some passengers that he had
told his wife to leave him if she wanted, since he went to jail or to go to this oak tree and tie a yellow
ribbon around it to see if she wants him to stick around and he will go and check it out. In the end, he
saw hundreds of ribbons tied on to the tree. Not only is this an amazing story, but also very
unforgettable one as well, because he finds out that after four years in jail his wife has enough love for
him to go to this tree and tie hundreds of ribbons just to show the type of love the women had for
Vingo. I have to say that, I believe this story is truly unforgettable, but I also got a story that is very
extraordinary, like the time that I got my very first car. Furthermore, I didn t just get a car, I got the
love of two truly loving parents. Much like Mr. Hamill and his story about love I too have a love story
that involves not my wife, but my parents. When I got to the age of driving, and around the time to go
to college I wasn t expecting any type of car of any sort because I knew that my family just had
enough money to get me into college. However, one week after I took my driver s test and passed I
was welcomed with a brand new 2015 Camaro. It was so

Australia s Indigenous People Of The World s Most...
People who are not from Australia, may have never heard the word Indigenous or know the meaning
behind it. If they have heard the word they might not know about Australia s Indigenous people.
Maybe when they think of Australia they automatically think of British convicts. Only the British
convicts weren t the first people to own the land in Australia, there come people way before them and
they are still fighting for their rights and land today.
It is said that humans have been on this continent from somewhere around 60,000 years. Prior to
British settlement, more than 500 Indigenous nations inhabited the Australian continent,
approximately 750,000 people in total. Their cultures had developed over 60,000 years, making

The first Tasmanians used large sandstone overhangs and limestone cave systems as permanent
shelters from the cold winds that cut across a frozen landscape. Throughout the Pleistocene a thick
icesheet covered the highland plateaus, and glaciers flowed down the mountain valleys within a few
kilometres of where the people had made their homes. They lived in caves in the south west hinterland
as well as sandstone rock shelters in close proximity to the ancient coastline. They found ways to
quickly adapt to the land that surrounded them. Learning new things each day in order to survive.
Aboriginals could have never guessed that their whole world was going to change in such a short
amount of time. The arrival of Lt James Cook in 1770 marked the beginning of the end for this ancient
way of life. Cook was followed soon enough by the arrival of the First Fleet, in January of 1788,
under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, whose mission was to establish a penal colony and take
control of Terra Australia for settlement. With the arrival of the first British ships everything that was
once known for Australia s Indigenous people was completely destroyed. It is estimated that between
1788 and 1900, the Indigenous population of Australia was reduced by 90%. Three main reasons for
this dramatic population decline were: The introduction of new diseases, Settler acquisition of

An 11th Century Masterpiece Of The Middle Ages
An 11Th Century Masterpiece
What defines a masterpiece? A masterpiece can be defined as an enduring piece of work that has been
widely accepted, as both exceptional and groundbreaking, in a way that greatly influences society.
Masterpieces come in many varieties and forms such as art pieces, music, and architecture. One of the
greatest masterpieces of the Middle Ages, and one that is still standing today, is the Ely Cathedral. Ely
Cathedral s construction began in 1082 and took about three hundred years to be completed (Clark,
William W.). During this time, cathedrals arose out of towns and cities, which were the natural centers
of Christianity. The Middle Ages was a period of great volatility: a time of invasions, conquering of
lands, battles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ruling class of the day, consisting of kings, queens and their courts, was deeply intertwined with
the Catholic Church. Etheldreda, queen of East Angles who later became a nun, founded a monastery
in 673 on the grounds that would later become Ely Cathedral. Upon her death and elevation to
sainthood she was enshrined where Ely Cathedral would later rise from the place of the former
monastery at the decree of the Bishop of Bangor. The bishops of the Middle Ages held high social
status and had great influence because of the high roles they held in the state. They were thus able to
spend much of the church s wealth in and around the region of Ely on the creation and construction of
Ely Cathedral (Burton, Edwin). This spending greatly led to the birth of Ely Cathedral as a social
priority. This priority took the form of a broadening of the social structure that included new trades
such as stone cutting, masonry and other forms of skilled labor that led to artistic endeavors such as
sculpting and painting all directly impacted by cathedral building ( Cathedral Building in the Middle
Ages ). Held in very high spiritual and social regard, the cathedrals throughout Europe, including Ely,
commanded a kind of reverence that lasted for hundreds of years much as the Catholic Church had
before the church gradually began to lose hold of its dominance as the Renaissance began to flourish.
Once the Renaissance took hold many cathedrals, including Ely, were diminished in influence and
even damaged or destroyed. Ely, however, withstood time ( The Cathedrals of

Review Of Homer Hickam s October Sky
Once we finished reading October Sky, we were left with an immense feeling of satisfaction. Homer
Hickam portrays in his memoir what times were like in the coal mining days of southern West
Virginia. He does this so well that you feel like you re actually experiencing the moments with the
Rocket Boys. Furthermore, the book inspires you to follow your dreams and to not give up when times
are hard. Therefore, without a second thought, we rate this book a five. We would recommend this
touching and nostalgic memoir to anyone. October Sky is about a teenage boy named Sonny Hickam,
who lives in the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia. Faced with an uncertain future, Sonny tries

Dante s Inferno and the Garden of Earthly Delights
The Garden of Earthly Delights painted by Hieronymus Bosch, depicts many vivid fictional scenes in
triptych style. The right wing of the triptych depicts Hell and the causes of man s downfall, which
Dante wrote about in the Inferno. Dante tries to convey to all humanity the consequences of human
actions and the levels of hell that he believes exist for different levels of sins. Dante divides Hell up
into ten different circles, and there is an upper and a lower level of Hell. Dante and Bosch have similar
views on the evil within people and this evil is represented in their works, whether it transpires in a
painting or in a book.

And that you may report on me up there, know that I am Bertran de Born, the one who evilly
encouraged the young king. (XXVIII: 133 135) Dante portrays the figure of Bertran as a man who is
holding his head that has been cut off. With regards to the disemboweled person, Wrong is it for a man
to have what he once cast off. (XII: 104 105)
br
br There is a woman at the bottom right of the painting that is being held by a kangaroo type creature.
This creature may represent the invisible force that Dante believes is inside a sinner that makes him do
the things he does, whether it be caused by mental or physical suffering. One of the sinners in the
Inferno, an Impersonator, kept craving water. He said, O you who bear no punishment at all (I can t
think why) within this world of sorrow, he said to us, pause here and look upon the misery of one
Master Adamo: in life I had all that I could desire, and now, alas, I crave a drop of water. (XXX: 58
63) There is a man pictured near the woman and he is throwing up. This could also be representative
of the evil inborn in sinners.
br
br At the bottom left side of the painting is a man about to be eaten by a termite who has a game table
on his head. This is illustrating that the tables are turned on the man who has committed some terrible
crime. In the Inferno this is represented by Lucifer eating the three worst sinners, Judas Iscariot,
Brutus, and Cassius, all who betrayed their

Serviceman Dorie Miller Essay
During the Second World War, be that as it may, African Americans discovered chances to oppose
these predispositions. One such illustration happened on December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was
assaulted by the Japanese. Serviceman Dorie Miller dragged his leader to wellbeing and, deprived of
any formal battle preparing, kept an eye on an automatic weapon, shooting down a few Japanese
planes. Mill operator was granted the Navy Cross for his dauntlessness on May 27, 1942, getting to be
distinctly one of the initially perceived legends of World War II. Prior to the Japanese assaulted Pearl
Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Miller was prohibited from serving in battle since he was dark. Rather, he
worked in the cafeteria. Yet, when the bombs dropped on his ship, Miller rushed to the deck, moved
the ship s harmed chief out of damage s way, and began terminating on warplanes, as indicated by
military records. In 1942, Miller was granted the Navy Cross, ... Show more content on

Soviet powers were coming nearer and nearer to the Fatherland from the east, and in the west Allied
strengths had crossed the German fringe. German Chancellor Adolf Hitler proposed to dispatch an

them to join Germany in its war against the communists of the Soviet Union. In May 1940, he had bet
on an unexpected assault through the thick Ardennes Forest into Belgium and France and had won a
shocking triumph. Presently he anticipated history to rehash itself: again German defensive player
would progress through the hiding woods of the Ardennes to strike his foes off guard. Racism and

  • 2. The Visual Recognition Of Image Patterns CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background to the Study As a scientific discipline, computer vision is concerned with the extraction of information from images to be employed in a decision making process. The image data can take many forms, such as video sequences, still images, digitized maps, diagrams and sketches. These images may be in colour format, grey scale or in binary format. The common approach is to extract characteristic features from the image either in the spatial domain or in some suitable transform domain. Whether the goal is classification or recognition, a measure of similarity or distance must be formulated and the success rate of the system evaluated. Some of the application areas of computer vision are: 1.1.1. Robotics The visual recognition of image patterns is a fundamental human attribute that uses the eye as a sensor and dedicated parts of the brain as the decision making processor. The visual recognition enables humans to perform a variety of tasks such as target identification, ease of movement, handling tools, communication among others. Advances in sensing and visual perception techniques have enabled some of these attributes to be transferred to robots. For example, identification of colour is a useful asset in a robot in an industrial automation process that involves sorting. [1], [2], [3] 1.1.2. Industrial Inspection Industrial inspection is an area in which pattern recognition is of importance. A pattern recognition system captures images ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Workplace Is An Essential Part Of Professional Life Modern workplace is a specific and highly changeable sphere where the interests of employees and employers are highly interconnected and opposed at the same time. Workplace management has become an important part of any organizations life, especially during the last decades, when people have been recognized by different management theories as the greatest assets of an organization. Dealing with people, making them develop and learn, making them follow the planned agenda and achieving something with the help of others have always been among the most important character features of professional business and political lives. However, the case study lack details about the acceptance of those changed practices by other employees and, what is more important, employers. II. History of Management and Workplace Learning. Theories and Concepts. Although a great number of managerial practices have been used through the centuries of human development, they were rarely investigated and conceptualized. However, it is clear that such important organizations as the Church or the ancient armies were based on particular practices and concepts. The history of management normally starts with the Industrial Revolution and the following mass production that changed the face of the businesses and the world in general. Each stage of the management theories development brought new ideas about the nature of an organization, the place and importance of the workplace learning. One of the oldest theories of management is the Scientific Management theory developed by Frederick Taylor, who tried to develop the standards of organizations and their tasks. It is followed by the Bureaucratic Management Theory suggested by Max Weber. This theory mostly concentrated on the types of organizations and the hierarchy of organizational tasks and responsibilities. These two theories compile the period, widely known today as a traditional management, where the structure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the first products Johnson Johnson developed was ready to use surgical dressings which to led to large reduction in surgical mortality rates. • 5. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Diagnostic Imaging INTRODUCTION Modern medicine has undergone major advancements over the past years. One of these developments include the capacity to retrieve crucial information about the human body and its health beyond the use of manual diagnostic techniques. This is referred to as Medical or Diagnostic Imaging. Medical or Diagnostic Imaging refers to the various techniques that can be used to see inside the human body. Its non invasive nature means that the body does not have to be opened up surgically for medical practitioners to view the organs anatomically. In clinical settings, it can be used to aid in the diagnosis or treatment of different ailments. Early diagnosis provided by its sophisticated technology saves countless patient lives, and without its help, we wouldn t have been able to develop cures or treatments for many diseases. Its ability to monitor subtle changes in patients that would otherwise be missed by unassisted human eyes is also a hallmark of modern clinical practice. The radiograph, one of the most common diagnostic imaging tools utilized in this field, possesses a very important component called contrast. Contrast helps radiologists perceive image detail and glean information from the area of interest. Radiation Technologists, or Rad Techs, should always ensure that radiographs have the right amount of contrast so that the radiologist can easily read them for faster diagnosis. In terms of education, enormous equipment and expensive yet high quality machines have always surrounded the College of Medical Radiation Technology (or CMRT). However, it is not just about the cost but also about their effectiveness and usefulness for the CMRT students. • 6. Spanking A Child The topic of should you spank your child has been a hot button topic recently in the U.S. While many Parents support the idea, some parents on the other hand are against the idea. In this thread, I will be stating my opinion on spanking a child. Why or why not? I will also be state weather or not the U.S should ban spanking, like many European countries have done. To start what is my position on spanking a child? While many parents tend to agree with the idea of spanking, I myself do not agree with the concept. My reason for this is because many adults say that spanking is a form of discipline. Well if we take a look at the word discipline, it stems from the word disciple, which means to teach. So based on that, what is it that you are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of those means can be embarrassment. At the ages of 10 to 18 years old it s all about image for a child. A child wants to fit in so bad that if a parent do something to disrupt that image it s mental, it s emotional, and depending on what you did it can be physical. Meaning you don t have to hit a child to get your point across, and all parents do it. Embarrassing a child is a rite of passage as a parent as well as a tool that is 100 percent legal. Now, should the U.S put a ban on spanking a child? My answer for that is no. My reason for this is because as a parent, there isn t a book on parenting, you are pretty much making it up as you go, and if you believe that spanking is the right thing to do. Then it shouldn t be up to the government to tell you how to parent. However, if you are hitting a child to an extensive degree causing physical marks that look 50 shades of purple, or leaving laceration marks from a switch, then you are clearly abusing a child and should be punished accordingly. Now would a law preventing spanking interfere with parenting decisions? Yes and no. What I mean by this is if you pass a law like this not all parents will comply, and be willing to learn new parenting techniques, while the parents who are willing to learn will not be affected because they are still finding ways to discipline their ... The Mexican women and men especially in the lower age groups the need to exercise regularly. When it comes to purchasing shoes, or any kind of footwear, price, durability and flexibility are some of the things that a person considers. Most Mexicans, though increasing in the middle class, are still not so well financially endowed to be in the position of the American consumer purchasing power. Thus they are especially not able to buy so many shoes (in average 2.5 pairs) as the average American does (men an average of 12 pairs, women an average of 27). But an all in one shoe could be the perfect match for an Mexican; a shoe that you can wear to a party, a casual meeting, a walk around the city, for yoga, gym, jogging, hiking, other water sports and in the weekends. The Beat Generation Essay The one thing that we yearn for in our living days, that makes us sigh and groan and undergo sweet nauseas of all kinds, is the remembrance of some lost bliss that was probably experienced in the womb and can only be reproduced (though we hate to admit it) in death. (Kerouac, Jack. On the road. ). This quote, from Jack Kerouac s book On the Road, is a brilliant example of the overall feel of the Beat Generation. Jack Kerouac is one of the most influential writers of the Beat Generation, rivaled only by the likes of Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burrough. But what exactly is the Beat Generation? Born on March 12, 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts to French speaking parents from the French quarter of Quebec and French was spoken at home, Kerouac was the final of three children (Jack Kerouac). As a result of his upbringing, Kerouac was not a native English speaker; he actually did not learn English until the age of six (Jack Kerouac). Kerouac experienced tragedy at a dreadfully young age, his older brother Gerard died of rheumatic fever when he was four years old (Jack Kerouac). Kerouac and Gerard had grown close during Gerard s illness, and Gerard s death left Kerouac feeling exceptionally lost. But the lessons Kerouac learned from Gerard s death would stay with him forever and shape his future writing, particularly his reverence for life (Jack Kerouac). • 9. Social Classes In The 19th Century If the lower classes are not controlled it will be hard to maintain the social structure and prevent internal conflict. In most societies throughout World History, a small, rich ruling class has dominated the social and political aspects of society. The large majority of the population has always been in the lower classes of society, and controlling these classes through fear, brute force, economic oppression or appeasement is instrumental to maintain order. Failing to maintain control often leads revolts, social upheavals or violent class struggles. While in most societies the upper classes attempted to control lower classes, some were not successful. Life for women is rough in Algeria due to them being in this war with the radicle Islamics. The women are much weaker than the men therefore they believe that women cannot do the same thing that they do, which is where most of the sexism comes from.During the war women played parts in mostly helping out the troops, also another reason they were targeted. • 12. Pennell s Argument Analysis After reading this issue, and making some research in the subject, I believe that this is not an opinion article. The writer, Jay Pennell, did not state his position about the race and the NASCAR restart rules. In fact, he just gave an overview of what happened at Talladega Superspeedway. So, he cited the drivers opinions and comments about the race, and described what happened. It is, indeed, a controversial issue but Pennel did not give his opinion. My general feeling about this issue is that this problem seems to be something that has occurred before. It was not the first time that a botched restart affected the outcome of the race. • 13. The Characterization of Miss Brill in Miss Brill by... In the Bedford Introduction to Literature, Characterization is defined as ... the process by which a writer makes that character seem real to the reader (2126). In order to do this a writer has multiple tools at their disposal that add to the depth of a character and simplify roles in a story. This includes the use of Protagonists and Antagonists, static and dynamic characters, showing and telling, and motivated and plausible action, as well as many others. The short story Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield is no exception to this and displays the main character of Miss Brill as the protagonist, who is confronted with the reality of her existence. One of the most vital elements of the story though is the classification of Miss Brill as a dynamic character. Being a dynamic character entail that the knowledge about the character grows and that some kind of change takes place because of the action occurring in the plot. In Miss Brill this hinges on the fact that Miss Brill spends her time alone, with almost no actual human contact. Her only means of living life is through that of those around her, she watches their actions, listens to their conversations and acts like a hidden parasite, drawing her own meaning in life by observing others, or as she put it ... there was always the crowd to watch (Mansfield 259). The tragedy of the story rests in that she does not see herself as this. She describes some of the other people in the park as ... they were nearly always the same, Sunday after Sunday, and Miss Brill had often noticed there was something funny about nearly all of them. Inflation is the pervasive and sustained rise in the aggregate level of prices measured by an index of the cost of various goods and services. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This differs from the CPI in that price subsidization, profits, and taxes may cause the amount received by the producer to differ from what the consumer paid. There is also typically a delay between an increase in the PPI and any eventual increase in the CPI. Producer price index measures the pressure being put on producers by the costs of their raw materials. This could be passed on to consumers, or it could be absorbed by profits, or offset by increasing productivity. In India and the United States, an earlier version of the PPI was called the Wholesale Price Index. Commodity price indices, which measure the price of a selection of commodities. In the present commodity price indices are weighted by the relative importance of the components to the all in cost of an employee. Core price indices: because food and oil prices can change quickly due to changes in supply and demand conditions in the food and oil markets, it can be difficult to detect the long run trend in price levels when those prices are included. Therefore most statistical agencies also report a measure of core inflation , which removes the most volatile components (such as food and oil) from a broad price index like the CPI. Piet Mondrian Essay What gave me the most clarity when coming to designing horizontals and verticals, was the paintings by Piet Mondrian, the way in which it is laid out is similar to the way in which we plan our lives, our goals and dreams. It goes in only two directions, up down and left right. Within the painting there are blocks of different sizes and colours, black lines and lastly white blocks. The black blocks, to me, represent a strong idea or notion. Which in a building could represent the border between private and public. These spaces, where one would think are bland and aimless yet are actually celebrated; in my design are the physical therapy corridor and the waiting areas. The physical therapy corridor As the physical therapy corridor is in the environment of the body, and in aid of the body, the corridor is the space that prepares your body for the healing it will undergo. To support this preparation, elements are added to the design that will make you more aware of the body. Such as a wooden frame box, that makes every step a prominent one, and adds a texture that is not cold or sterile, but rather warm and forgiving. The use of wood is also a reference to the body, adding a more human element than that that concrete or white clinical walls can provide. Lights and rough concrete also add to tactile senses by adding layer upon layer of interest, creating an anchor for the body, one that draws the body in, instead of repelling it as most hospital corridors ... In the context of this novel, he was the purest good in this ship, which could also be seen as a microcosm of the world as it was. Billy as a whole is seen mainly as a man without fault. He could do no wrong in his world, because he is the personification of all that is good. This makes his one flaw, that being his stutter, the perfect aspect of his being to show us of the dangers of innocence. The fact that he cannot bring words out to defend himself against the malice tossed at him because his very being will not allow him to even comprehend that there are people in the world with such ill intent. It provides our students with a professional that understands the context of learning from which their classroom stems. It also ensures a personal sense of growth: a lifelong process valued by the profession as a whole. I have combined beliefs from pedagogical, ethical and personally developed ideas I intend to use as a foundation in creating a nurturing classroom environment. Education could be defined ad infinitum, but for the purposes of synchronicity I have organized my beliefs in terms of four elements: enculturation, potential, inspiration and development. The meeting point of these ideas is the philosophical ideology of existentialist education. As defined by Dr. V.K. Maheshwari (2011), the origin of existentialism: rejects the existence of any source of objective, authoritative truth about metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. Instead, individuals are responsible for determining for themselves what is true or false, right or wrong, beautiful or ugly. For the existentialist, there exists no universal form of human nature; each of us has the free will to develop as we see fit. The focus is entirely student centered, whereas the teacher serves as a guide seeking to educate the whole person. Etheldreda, queen of East Angles who later became a nun, founded a monastery in 673 on the grounds that would later become Ely Cathedral. Upon her death and elevation to sainthood she was enshrined where Ely Cathedral would later rise from the place of the former monastery at the decree of the Bishop of Bangor. The bishops of the Middle Ages held high social status and had great influence because of the high roles they held in the state. They were thus able to spend much of the church s wealth in and around the region of Ely on the creation and construction of Ely Cathedral (Burton, Edwin). This spending greatly led to the birth of Ely Cathedral as a social priority. This priority took the form of a broadening of the social structure that included new trades such as stone cutting, masonry and other forms of skilled labor that led to artistic endeavors such as sculpting and painting all directly impacted by cathedral building ( Cathedral Building in the Middle Ages ).
