A Contextual Theory of Interethnic Communication As conceptualized by Young Yun Kim, the
interethnic communication theory describes the multifaceted layers and factors in communication
event. Described as an open system, interethnic communication occurs between communicators and
their interactant(s) who possess characteristic similarities or differences in terms of their ethnic or
identity markers (Kim, 2005). There are four layers to her theory: behavior, communicator,
situation, and environment. All of these layers contribute to how the communicator and their
interactant decides to interact, whether it is associative or dissociative. This paper will focus on the
situation layer. Implanted between the environment and communicator layer, the situation layer

Using a microscope to view living cells
Introduction
Living cells are the most basic unit of life, however, they are impossible to see without the
magnification of a microscope. There are different types of microscopes with alterations to serve a
specific function, but the general use is the same. It is a tool invented with a curved lense that
magnifies things that cannot be seen with the naked eye. A microscopecan be used to see many
things, in this particular lab they were used to observe cells of different organisms. We began by
looking at a few sample slides of euglena, salmonella, and lilium and recording our observations.
Then we created the slides ourselves with living matter. The first set of cells that we looked at
were onion cells, which we looked at by gathering a sample of onion epidermis from one of the
onion s layers and creating a slide to be placed on the stage of the microscope. Next, we took a
look at human cheek cells by obtaining a sample and again creating a slide by swabbing the inside
of a mouth with a toothpick. Finally, we looked at pond water by creating a slide with a small
amount that was collected in a dropper.
Purpose
The purpose of this lab was to gain more knowledge on the use of lab equipment, focusing
principally on the microscope by observing a variety of cells underneath its magnifying lense at
different levels of objective power and recording those observations.

Abstract. The objective of this work was to determine the activation energy and rate law for the
reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium shot. An analysis of the reaction s initial rate at
varying molarities of hydrochloric acid and masses of magnesium shot, along with the method of
initial rates was used to determine the rate law for the reaction; rate = k (SA of Mg)a [H+]b. It was
hypothesized that the reaction would be second order overall. After determining the rate law, the
activation energy was determined by changing the temperature at which the reaction took place.
Using the rate constants calculated at the two different temperatures, the activation energy was

One of the biggest sources of error was letting some of the hydrogen gas escape during the
reaction because the cap of the pressure probe could not be placed on top of the flask quick
enough. Not being able to measure all of the change in pressure resulted in a lower rate law
because the graph of pressure versus time had a smaller slope. In future experiments, a system in
which the reactants could be mixed with the pressure probe already in place would yield much
more accurate results because the change in pressure would be higher which would cause the
initial rate to be larger. Another source of error in the experiment was keeping the temperature of
the trial in the ice bath consistent. If the temperature of the HCl changed from when it was
measure to when the reaction took place, the activation energy calculations would have had
increased error. Because the HCl was still sitting in the ice bath, if the actual temperature was
colder that what we calculated, the activation energy would have been lowered. For future
experiments, the temperature of the HCl should be recorded as soon to when the Mg shot is added
as possible, or the experiment could be run in a temperature controlled
