With the Union victory in the Civil War in 1865, millions of slaves were given their
freedom. Although these millions of slaves are now free, the rebuilding on the South
during the Reconstruction introduced many obstacles. These obstacles include
sharecropping, tenant farming, the black codes , and not to forget the lack of
education and rights African Americans had at the time. Sharecroppingis consisted of
a slave renting land from a white man and having to give up a portion of their crops
at the end of each year. The black codes were basically laws against what type of
labor African Americans can be given. In the state of South Carolina, blacks were
only able to work as farmers or servants; the same jobs these free people worked as
slaves. After decades of slavery, blacks were still under the control of the white

Literature Review In examining recent literature on the topic of editing in the
writing process, three areas appear to be of some concern in dealing with this issue:
1) The true definition of editing and the editing process, 2) The perceived role and
responsibilities of the teacher and students, and 3) Effective editingstrategies that will
increase student learning. In order to truly implement editing strategies that will
impact the learner, the first two areas must be addressed.
In the review of the literature, I found that many students and teachers alike had
some misconceptions about the true definition of editing and the roles that each
must play. Often times, the editing process and the revision process were
mistakenly mixed, or thought to be one and the same process. Marchisan and Alber
(2001) define the revision stage as the time to look for changes in concepts and
improvements to the paper in order to help achieve its purpose for the audience. In
this stage, the writer becomes a problem solver to improve the concept (idea) of the
paper.
The editing stage is on a different scale. It is not used to make changes in the
concept of the paper, rather it is to improve and clarify the meaning. Enders (2001)
states that in the editing stage, students should check for errors in spelling, usage, and
clarity of expression. Too often teachers mix both the revision stage and editing stage,
creating confusion with the students in what they are really suppose to do

Before I started this class, my writing ability was very execrable. I have passion in
writing stories, and writing about myself. I just didn t have any good experience in
a well written paper. I was used to writing in an informal way instead of formal. I
never knew how to start off the beginning paragraphs. I just thought about a topic,
and wrote without any process or organization. I would continue to write without
grabbing the reader s attention. Under no circumstances, did I know how to end it
because my topics were too broad.
To begin, I tried thinking of a much more focused topic. Then, I would have a way
to end the story so I would not write too much. Next, I free wrote about everything
that came to mind. After that, I added more information or detail to my essay
wherever it was needed. I again, went back and edited grammar mistakes that I
made. Although, I would take the time to revise my essay as much as I thought was
necessary. I rarely took the time and organized my information, so the organization
always seemed off to me.
Based off of the feedback that I received from my peers and instructor, my topics
were always right on point with what we were focusing on. The topics I wrote
about were always focused and not too broad. Another strength of mine was the
amount of time I took to revise my essays. I always tried to get at least two different
people to review my essay and give me constructive criticism. My conclusions always
went over everything I wrote about

at a struggle with itself rather than against the natural phenomenon. What looked
like a war against the storm was more a social catastrophe that aroused huge race
disparities among Americans (Smith 2006). These disparities were unraveled in
various media images and their accompanying captions, which were critical in
framing perceptions of people and event surrounding the catastrophe (Dyson
2006). In his essay Frames of Reference, Michael Dyson particularly highlights the
media s role in framing African Americans as outlaws and savages (Dyson 2006).
Two photos helped to solidify the contention that race based bias still exists as
deeply embedded in society: one image depicted a black male looting a grocery
store while am almost identical photo of a white couple was described as finding
food and necessities. These two images of identical occurrence are portrayed
differently as white people were viewed as innocent and doing the right thing by
seeking food and shelter whereas black victims were perceived as breaking moral
codes and disrupting the society. The importance of the role of race is further
