Bronfenbrenner s Ecological Systems, Nature And Nurture...
Development psychology has many ideas of how humans are influence during their
development. The ones that this paper will be covering are the Bronfenbrenner s
Ecological Systems, nature and nurture influences and cultural influences. I have also
given my own personal influence to further demonstrate my understanding of each
idea.
The Bronfenbrenner s Ecological Systems is a model created by psychologist Urie
Bronfenbrenner that refers to five structures of which an individual interacts with that
impacts their development. The structures are referred to as systems in the model and
there are five systems: Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem,
Chronosystem.
The Microsystem refers to the environment that has a direct influence on an
individual; school, home, place of worship, teachers, and peers are included in the
Microsystem. A personal example is that my mother, an extremely prominent figure
in any person s Microsystem, noticed that I had a rather good potential for working
on creative stories. As a direct influence on me, she gave me praise on the stories
that I showed her and gave me encouragement to continue working on my writing.
Therefore, she directly influenced my psychological development since her praise
heightened my self esteem and allowed me to have a good self image of myself
thanks to the environment I was raised in.
The Mesosystem refers to the interactions that occur between the systems, such as
how one s school life interacts with one s home life.
Steve Jobs And Apple Inc.
Steve Jobs and Apple Inc.
Steve Jobs who was cofound, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc. and Apple Inc. is a
good example of paradoxical thinking. Steve Jobs was a visionary leader. He cofound
and grew Apple for 9 years, was ousted and in exile for 15 years and then returned to
lead the company on 14 year campaign to glory, cut a contemporary heroic figure.
(Decisionwise, n. d.) Steve Jobs and Apple already become the legend and the famous
example in the business world.
During his execution period, Apple has become one of the best and most popular
companies in the mobile and personal computer industry. Every time when it has

When he was kicked out of the company, the change of each company was little.
Meanwhile, the sales turnover of Apple declined rapidly and the leader team of

period. After he became the CEO of Apple again, he knew himself better than before
and knew everyone in his team. Meanwhile he also noticed that he should listen to
others and also took others advise in the company. Therefore, he was more open than
last period. When he and his team executed the vision, he knew to put the right
people in the right places.
Part of Jobs return to Apple included developing a partnership with one of the
company s biggest rivals: Microsoft. Jobs recognized that in order to succeed in the
business of computers, and be the best company they could be, he had to reach out to
Microsoft and create the partnership. At the end of the day, it was about delivering
the best products for the customers. Jobs said this (Slattery, 2011):
If we want to move forward and see Apple healthy and prospering again, we have to
let go of a few things here. We have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win,
Microsoft has to lose. We have to embrace a notion that for Apple to win, Apple has
to do a really good job. And if others are going to help us that s great, because we
need all the help we can get, and if we screw up and we don t do a good
In This Day And Age Muslim Women Can In Many Cases Be
Seen
In this day and age Muslim women can in many cases be seen hunting down the light
in this dim patriarchal society of India. Various enactments have been instituting over
and over, relating to make changes in the solid status of women. The solid status that
has been raised by the general public itself which alludes the women as subordinate
to men as well as a reliant on them for their extreme survival. This circumstance still
perseveres.
The reasoning that a woman is someone who needs to hold up under the basic
subtleties of religion, needs to change. For this change to come, a great religion or

requests of our advancing society. In the first place, ... Show more content on

viewing it as an impedance with Islamic law and labelling and limiting them as a

Besides, it is assumed that Muslim women are additionally been given the equivalent

Erikson s Psychosocial Theory
Many children around the world have been neglected and abused. Abuse and neglect
can be damaging not only throughout childhood but also throughout adolescence,
adulthood, and even the next generation as well. Erik Erikson s psychosocial theory
helps better understand the internal thoughts throughout the lifetime of those who
have been abused and neglected during childhood. Erikson s psychosocial theory has
many stages that focus on different parts of a person s lifetime such as Trust vs.
Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Intimacy vs.
Isolation, and Generativity vs. Stagnation. Children that have been neglected or
abused can have developmental and psychological issues beginning at a young age
and following them... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Erikson s stage, Intimacy vs. Isolation is discussing how adults either want to be
with and around with others or become isolated and reject others company. This
stage provides some insight into the rejection or acceptance of the children of the
abused. Most of the time the children of the abused do not get the attention they
need due to the intimacy issues of their parents (Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p. 16).
Erikson s stage Trust vs. Mistrust can go along with this point as well. If the parent
is neglecting the child, the child will not get what it needs from the parent.
Therefore, the child will have a problem trusting others later on in their lifetime
(Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p. 17). Another one of Erikson s stages, Generativity vs.
Stagnation is discussing how adults either want to contribute to their children
meaningfully or not at all. Most of the children in this study get no positive
contribution from their parents. Erikson s stage Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt ,
can help better understand this point. If the parent does not spend time with their
child they can also keep their child from learning abilities and skills that they need
to know. If the child does not learn the necessary skills required to do certain and
basic things, they may begin to doubt their own
Merlin s The Once And Future King Merlin
Merlin really didn t get paid enough for his job.
Oh, no, he wasn t talking about his manservant position although honestly it would be
nice to get a raise in that area as well. It was Merlin s unofficial responsibilities that
were definitely not being compensated enough.
See, many many years ago (about five actually), a giant chained up dragon had told
Merlin it was his destiny to protect some arrogant, pratty prince from all the evils
in the world. There s a prophecy , the dragon had said. He s the Once and Future
King, Merlin , He ll bring back magic, Merlin .
That was all right and good, but his reward of future promises were starting to sour

A couple yards ahead, Arthur s shoulders rose.
He didn t hear that, did he? Merlin wondered, then shrugged to himself. So what? It
was nothing he wouldn t say to the man s face.
Now having nothing to do but stand, Merlin s attention wandered from Arthur s
advancing back. His mind went to Camelot, and he began to wonder what Gauis
would cook for supper, and just what Gwen (er, Queen Guinevere) was doing back at
the castle.
Something twinged in his chest, and he realized he missed Gwen. Yes, he saw her
every morning when he fetched the King and Queen their breakfast, and he often
spotted her and smiled at her as he ran through the halls on a errard for Gauis or
Arthur.
But he hadn t really seen her lately he hadn t spoken with her, hadn t teased her about
Arthur or complemented her hair.

Charles Manson once said You know, a long time ago being crazy meant
something, nowadays everyone is crazy. Charles Manson was the man who brought
fear into Los Angeles by brainwashing people to become part of his cult and
together they formed The Family and killed 9 innocent people. During the Manson
Murders many of the people in Los Angeles did not feel quite safe due to the fact
that these killings were random and many felt as if anybody could be the next victim.
Charles Mansonwas born on November 12th, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the

the family Helter Skelter was coming, Helter Skelter was the uprising of a racial

the whites and implicating the African American community with various acts.
(crimemuseum.org) Charles Manson s first killing involved Gary Hinman, he was
a very close friend of Charles Manson and allowed Manson and members of the

Manson was having trouble with money with a guy named Crowe. Manson shot

Females Influences on Pip in Great Expectations Essay
Females Influences on Pip in Great Expectations
By Charles Dickens
There are many influences on Pip s life regarding his thoughts on women. This
would therefore mean that Pip would take his views on women from those that were
a played a major role in his life, for example:
* Mrs Joe Gargery is Pip s sister and has raised Pip because their parents have died.
Mrs Joe Gargery has raised both Joe Gargery and Pip by hand as she is not happy
with the way her life has turned out.
* Ms Havisham is an old, frail woman who has been devastated by her fiancГ© who
stood her up at the reception of their wedding. She has now dedicated her life to

Another feature in Mrs Joe Gargery s character that may have affected Pip is Mrs
Joe s snobbish behaviour. She showed this behaviour when her uncle was to visit
especially when her uncle, who has had a successful life.
She plays a great part in the rearing of Pip as she was a very close relation of Pip
although she raised him by hand . Unlike all the other female characters of Great
Expectations , Mrs Gargery is the first female Pip grows up with and therefore Pip
will take all he s perceptions of all the female characters he meets from the
characteristics of his sister.
She influences Pip to see women as very violent people, but at the same time may
influence Pip to become a stronger person as these situations could return during life.
To attack or to be attacked? may have been the major question on the mind of Mrs
Joe. But is it not better to be in control than to be controlled?
How does Ms Havisham influence |Pip?
Ms Havisham, like Mrs Joe Gargery, is a snob and shows this by the way she refers to
the characters in the play such as Pip. for instance, she refers to Pip as Boy instead of
Pip. By this we can see that Ms Havisham sees herself as a higher individual in class
than Pip (which she is) and has no respect for those in a lower class than her.
Ms Havisham is a woman who lives with hatred (of men) in her life
Love Complications In A Midsummer Night s Dream
Love is the key to the world, or that is what is said at least. In the play A
Midsummer Night s Dream , there are many love complications. The play is a
tragic comedy in which a girl, Hermia, has a choice to marry someone she does not
love or she will be killed. When told her options, she devises a plan to run away
and elope with the one she loves, but plans go awry when her best friend tells the
man that is madly in lovewith Hermiathat she plans to run away that night. The plan
is also changed when fairy king Oberon interferes with their love quad and uses a
magical potion on the wrong person, once Oberon fixes his mistakes the conflicts are
resolved and everyone is happy with their own lovers. Sometimes love is trying, but

Egeus believes since Hermia is his daughter, that she belongs to him. He goes to

tries to prove he is worthy of her love, and he says My love is more than his... And
which is more than all these boasts can be I am beloved of beauteous Hermia. (Pg

tried to choose who Hermia loves, he threw another man into Hermia and Lysander s
love, but since Hermia and Lysander s love is so mad, they stick

My mother would always read to me before bed, yet not typical kids stories such as
Cinderella, Snow White or Peter Pan. But rather wisdom thoughts and stories of
Aristotle, Plato, Omar Khayyam, Abay, more modern writers, Robin Sharma and

constantly reading whether it is an article on her phone, a daily newspaper or a
book that she has bought yesterday. She would always sit on the brown leathered
sofa and wear her golden framed glasses on and a very focused yet relaxed
expression. As I sat watching her read, she became my role model. I would settle

grade. In their sight, I was an abnormal child. Furthermore Russian schools (schools
that are bilingual Russian and Kazakh) had a very rigorous environment, and a
difficult attitude towards learning, at least that was my opinion. I had to write two
essays on Kazakh and Russian, reside a one page poem by Alexander Pushkin, and

algebra. With the overwhelming course work, my schedule was somewhat like this:

Kazakh literature ; 12pm 12:30pm Lunch ; 1pm 3pm Geometry and Algebra ; 4pm
British English; 5pm Geography ; 6pm History of Kazakhstan
I faced an oblivion. I wrote Russian words with English letters or English words with
Kazakh letters. The grammar for every language is completely different and has
individual complexity, for example: Russian has Cyrillic alphabet, three genders for
verbs and nouns. Kazakh has Cyrillic alphabet, soft and strong vowels, and complex
sentence structure. Even though I was made fun of, I would continually ignore my

Lady Macbeth And Grendel Research Paper
Early English Literature was the era of the first written stories. Characters play an
important role in these literatures. Characters are depended on to run the story.
Specific characters from one story can be compared to specific characters from
another story. In Shakespeare s famous play, Macbeth, a key character is Lady
Macbeth. In Beowulf, a key character is Grendel. Lady Macbeth and Grendel can
easily be compared. Lady Macbeth and Grendel share many similarities and
differences in Early English Literature.
Grendel and Lady Macbeth share many similarities in the beginning of both novels.
Lady Macbeth and Grendel are both alone when introduced. When Lady Macbeth s
character first came on stage, she was alone and reading a letter from her ... Show

One similarity between the two characters was their desire to change. Lady
Macbeth showed stages of change throughout the play and didn t show as much
evil as she did in the beginning. Grendel took longer to figure out the need to
change, but did when it was too late. When faced with the chance of death, Grendel
didn t want to kill anymore; he only wanted to stay alive, The infamous killer
fought for his freedom, wanting no flesh but retreat, desiring nothing but escape.
(18). Another similarity between the two is their suffering in the final hours of
their lives. During the final fighting with Beowulf, Grendel had shrieks of pain and
his strength and power was gone. Grendel knew his death was near and he would
soon go to hell. He also had to suffer with the pain until he finally died. Similarly,
Lady Macbeth is suffering due to the guilt she is feeling. Her last words were
about the death of King Duncan, Macduff s wife, and Banquo. She suffers and is
sad because it is her fault the killings started in the first place, What, will these
hands ne er be clean? No more o that, my lord, no more o that; you mar all with this
starting. (206) She knows those deeds could not be undone. A third similarity
between Grendel and Lady Macbeth is that they both died alone. No one was around
when both Lady Macbeth and Grendel died. Grendel had a lonely
Erikson s Theory Of Lifespan
Introduction Erikson s theory of lifespan continues in the final four stages of life,
which are identified as adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood and late
adulthood. Each stage identifies a conflict to be resolved with indicators of success
and failure at the stage. It seems however, that the theory in its framework is not all
inclusive. Each section will discuss the conflict and indicators of resolution, as well
as identifying how the stage may vary for different groups.
Adolescence
The adolescence stage in Erikson s theory occurs between age twelve to age eighteen,
where the conflict to be resolved includes identity versus role confusion. During this
timeframe, the individual establishes a sense of self, where successful ... Show more

This process is especially unique due to having neither identity of gender or sexual
preference being dominant, causing it more difficult for women to fully embrace
their individuality.
Young Adulthood In Erikson s theory for young adulthood, the conflict to be resolved
at this stage is intimacy versus isolation. The theory discusses how individuals in the
age group of 20 to 40 are attempting to establish meaningful relationships with other
people (Erikson handout, 2017). Success at this stage includes strong relationships,
being able to maintain friendships, and physical and emotional intimacy, while failure
to resolve the conflict resulted in loneliness and isolation (Erikson handout, 2017).
The conflict at this stage is representative of socially constructed expectations of
gender roles and cultural expectations, which does not account for several groups. In
the stage s framework, it assumes a life path surrounding relationships and traditional
expectations of marriage and family development, family defined as heterosexual.
This traditional framework of development does not align with modern development
of lifespan. Gilligan (1993) discusses how traditionally in American culture, women s
roles are relational, and their identity is tied to their relationships with men and
children. With this, Erikson s theory at this stage excludes women who are driven by
careers or other passions outside of
Electoral Systems in the Caribbean
Essay Question Number 4; The Electoral systems in the Caribbean needs to be
changed. How real is this view?
An election as a political process serves as the single most important mechanism for
citizens to participate in the selection of a government. When conducted to
international standards, elections tend to confer legitimacy on a government. In the
Commonwealth Caribbean, the electoral experience varies and tends to reflect not
only the socio political culture of the member state but also its particular electoral
system.
The electoral system determines the difference between votes and seats; how votes
are translated into seats. How many and what kind of votes are needed to get a seat
varies from system to system. As a result, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Electoral systems in the region are mainly of the first past the post type. Electoral
systems are essentially the electoral formula used for electing the executive and
legislature. In the Anglo Caribbean countries (except Guyana), the first past the post
system elects the members of parliament, a majority of whom nominate the prime
minister. In the Latin Caribbean and Guyana the electoral formula is more
complicated, often including proportional representation and either an indirectly or
directly elected president. Caribbean electoral systems reflect the influence of the
former colonial powers and national circumstances such as the racial composition of
the population.
Elections and electoral systems aim at converting the popular will expressed as votes
into choices between candidates of political parties for political offices in the
executive and legislature. The electoral system therefore reflects itself in the party
system and the structure of governmental representation. This association between
elections, parties and government takes different forms. Ideal electoral systems
should comprise of competition, effective government, and fair representation along
with free and fair voting.
A review of the Caribbean electoral system show how these aims are attempted and
the strengths and weaknesses encountered. In the Dominican Republic there is a
mixed electoral system where the
Say No to Doping!
Doping in sports has been one of the most discussed issues by the world; either by
the free writers or the body of agencies related with sports. The discussion about
this kind of issue has started long time ago but it became more controversial and
intense when Lance Armstrong, who won the 2002 Tour de France by leaving his
nearest rival 7 seconds behind, failed the drug test (Cashmore) . Ellis Cashmore, a
professor of culture, media, and sports at Staffordshire University in the United
Kingdom, through his article, Making Sense of Sports , came up with an argument
that drug should be allowed in sports. In the article, he effectively countered the
argument of some people out there that taking drug will lead to the unfair
competition. As we are from the generation who are never bored of seeking the best
in human ability, the usage of drug is crucial in order to boost the performance of
the athlete. The prohibition of drug usage in sports surely will affect the athletes
performances and next lead to the turning off by the fans and this is surely a thing
needs to be taken into account (Cashmore) . I, myself, agree with Ellis Cashmore that
drug should be allowed in sports and I will explain my argument in terms of the
misconception about drug, the role of drug in promising competitive sports, and the
function of drug in maintaining athletes health. First, in order to change the entire
rule of sports by allowing the presence of drug in sports, the misconception about

the baby is (probably) Ross , but she s married to George. Even though we all know
George is terrible. Anyway, it s a lot to take in, but the show will presumably give us

George has everything going for him: Elizabeth, an heir, the Poldark lands, his
own church. Meanwhile, Demelza s brothers, Sam and Drake, take up preaching.
After Caroline and Dwight elope, Dwight vanishes. Wait a second here. More
members of the Carne family are coming to Cornwall? This certainly isn t going to
end up being a problem later on, is it? (Who are we kidding? This is Poldark.
Everything becomes a problem eventually.) The next question is this: where on
earth did George get a church? How? Is obtaining the church just to make him a
little more popular? That s probably not going to help, but we can t fault him for
trying for it. The wording also suggests that we ll skip forward to the birth of
Elizabeth s baby an heir could just be wishful thinking, but it seems more concrete,
as if the baby is coming or has already come. Finally, The Poldark lands presumably
refer to the Trenwith estate, not Ross Nampara, because that d be a heck of a
change to explain away if Ross and Demelza were suddenly homeless. Date: Sunday,

Declaration Of Independence And The Way To Wealth
Analysis
Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin both show an unfamiliar patriotism for a
country not yet formed in their works The Declaration of Independence and The Way
to Wealth respectively. Their ideology was manifested in their written works and
carried on through their actions. Jefferson lived a life as a wealthy farmer and
understood that government control was not a necessity, especially when it ventured
to tyranny. Benjamin Franklin embodied the Puritan ideology when urging others to
be industrious and frugal. Both of these ideals are examples of American ideology,
and Thomas Jeffersonand Benjamin Franklin express these in their works. As stated

Poor Richard forms the American ideology to be a hard working and economical
through all of his words of wisdom. There are no gains without pains (Way to
Wealth 237), which expresses the hard work mentality that was placed into the
American ideology because Americans were considered to be of lower class than the
people of Europe. Assuming that the Americans were lesser than them, the Europeans
did not pay much attention to the work ethic of the new nation, much less the nation
as a whole. So Benjamin Franklin wrote an Almanac, giving him a way to share his
knowledge with those in America. He created a society that would believe that
industry pays debts, while despair increaseth them (Way to Wealth 237) making
America relevant to the world, giving the country a place because it looked past their
present situation and more toward how to improve their livelihood. Benjamin
Franklin, an avid supporter of a hardworking and frugal society, sought to inform us
with his adages and make America into a better nation. Benjamin Franklin helped

identification of the struggle she experienced. Both The Sacrifice Of Iphigenia by
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Iphigenia by Alfred, Lord Tennyson use the myth of
Iphigenia to indicate that inhumane, egocentric people will sacrifice others in
order to defend themselves. After analyzing the poem Iphigenia, it can be
acknowledged that Alfred Lord Tennyson takes in deep consideration of Iphigenia
s pain. This can be exhibited on line 1 of the poem as Iphigenia says I was cut off
from hope in that sad place (Analysis). The tone of the poem could be utilized as
woe and upsetting, establishing the fact Iphigenia is in distress and needs help.
There is little hope, contemplating the idea nobody will appear to help (Analysis).

Is the banking industry responsible for the economic...
With about 320,000 people, Iceland has only about as many inhabitants as an average
German city. Nevertheless, the island republic is among the richest nations in the
world with one of the highest living standards. Iceland is a member of the United
Nations, NATO and the European Economic Area, as well as many other international
organizations. Is the banking industry responsible for the economic disaster of
Iceland?
Until the 80 s, Iceland was a more regulated economy with many interventions by the
state. Since then, the Icelandic economy has been unbundled and increasingly
liberalized. Since 1991, many state enterprises were successfully privatized. With the
establishment of the European Economic Area between Iceland and other member ...

Iceland s economic crisis shares a common bond with those that have infected other
developed economies recently: all have banking systems heavily engaged in the
practice of maturity mismatching. In other words, Icelandic banks issued short term
liabilities in order to invest in long term assets, a practice which created funding gaps
(i.e., liabilities less assets) of a given maturity for the three largest Icelandic banks
Kaupthing, Glitnir, and Landsbanki.
Thus, the banking system had to continuously roll over (renew) their short term
liabilities until their long term assets fully matured. If an event arose whereby
Icelandic banks failed to find new borrowers to continue rolling over their liabilities,
they could face a liquidity crisis and, more importantly, spark the collapse of the
Icelandic financial system; recent events have borne out this exact scenario.
The Icelandic banking collapse resulted from two major causes: inadequate regulation
of its central bank, and the inadequate size of their cash value of their banks.
Regarding the first, the great error of the bank controller was to focus control efforts
on the fight against inflation. This created an atmosphere conducive to speculators
who had their money in Iceland, and who were attracted by the extremely high
interest rates and a
Examples Of Perseverance In Cinderella Man
The film Cinderella Man shows multiple examples of perseverance. Perseverance
is when someone is determined to go through tough obstacles and difficulties, no
matter how hard they seem to be. If someone were to face obstacles that seem
impossible, they could go through them, or persevere, and try their best to
overcome it instead of just giving up. If someone was to have perseverance, they
would be persistent and continuously stay in the state they are, no matter how hard
their problems are. Cinderella Man has multiple examples of this because the main
character, James J. Braddock, perseveres through the difficult time that is the Great
Depression. He took risks to fend for his family and never succumbed to his
negative feelings when he faced problems that would feel almost impossible. James
Braddock had shown examples of perseverance in the movie Cinderella Man.... Show

Fate And Inevitability In Julius Caesar By George Millar
Explore the theme of fate and inevitability Millar introduces the theme of Fate and

There Will Be Blood
There Will be Blood was released in 2007. The director and the screenwriter was
by Paul Thomas Anderson. Some of the tremendous actors in this movie are,
Daniel Day Lewis, Paul Dano, and Dillon Freasier. I would say this movie really
set the tone for the American dream, even though it wasn t really thought of during
the movie s time period. It really shows hard work, greed, lust, and trickery.
Overall this is a good movie, with a very slow start. It is filled with drama,
mystery, and action. If you are for those kinds of films this movie is right up your
alley. This movie is more of an action, drama, and mystery film. You never know
what will be happening next. The film is filled with small hints, to where you have to

The Kushner s The Flamethrowers Essay

the other characters that are surrounded by her. From significant class differences

tension or conflict with others that is presented as oppression and resistance. This
also can be referred by Marxist Criticism , which according to the Online Writing

lower working class which impacts her life growing up and changes her future as
she is given an unforgettable chance to achieve social mobility through her given
opportunity to ride the Spirit of Italy. For Reno, driving the Spirit of Italy was

Ethnic Sovereignty And Cultural Attitude
When Kang first heard about the Han nationalism that excluded all the non Han
Chinese, he could not understand the logic behind it. In order to rebut the
revolutionaries, he wrote a long article to the Chinese Business Association in
America to explain the ideas of ethnic sovereignty and cultural attitude. In this article,
he had three major points about the Chinese identity. First, Kang felt that promoting
Han nationalism was the weirdest thing in the world because the Manchus and Han
had already formed a nation for more than 200 years. Kang said that the Qing Dynasty
did not discriminate against the Han people and allowed them to work in the
government. He thought that almost nobody had questioned the authority of the
Qing Dynasty in the past 200 years. Second, Kang then argued that if the
revolutionaries used ethnicity or race to define Chinaor Chinese nationalism, there
would be no real Chinese since in history the Han Chinesehad many intermarriages
with different ethnic groups. In the Spring and Autumn period, Confucius had already
used culture to define Chinese identity and Kang believed that most Chinese
intellectuals accepted this standard. Kang cited many historical events from the Era
of Disunity and claimed how culture could unify different ethnic groups in China.
Therefore, Kang promoted his Confucianism which ruled that if one practiced
Confucianism, he or she was Chinese. He believed that as long as minority groups
such as the Manchus accepted

Compare And Contrast The Roman Empire And The Han
Dynasty
Introduction
Han dynasty was formed by Liu Bang after defeating his rival Xiang Yu. The war
between them lasted for four years. Changan was the capital city currently referred to
as Xian. Han had two dynasties i.e. Western Han and Eastern Han. Some of the
Emperors that Han dynasty had include Wu, Jing, Wen, Gaozu, among others. Roman
Empire ruled the world from its seat in Italy. Roman Empire used its power to
conquer Europe and extended it America.
Similarities between Han Dynasty and Roman Empire
Both empires used the militarism to expand their territories. According to Gibbon,
Edward, Low, (1960, 201), Roman Empire used its army to fight its neighbors. It
can be remembered that Rome used to fight a series of War referred to as Punic ...

Difference between Han Dynasty and Roman Empire
The two Empires had different originality. Han Dynasty was formed from earlier
dynastic activities in classical China. The main aim for them was to restore political
order in the dynasty in China. Roman Empire was formed with the aim of controlling
of aristocratic landlords. It was politically motivated, with a hope of having the entire
universe to be under its control.
Hughes, (n.d., 234), argued that Han dynasty worked hard integrating the vast
territories as compared to the Roman Empire. The ethnic differences in South China
made it difficult for the integration of the territories the North China was united, and
it did not pose a challenge in the integration process. Despite this challenge Liu Bang
overcome it and was able to unite the divided side and formed Han dynasty. Roman
Empire was united, and inhabitants in their territory were willing to help the
authority through volunteering to join the

The True Inside Man Inside Man was released in 2006 and would later become the
highest grossing film for the director Spike Lee. The film is a crime drama, located
primarily in a bank in New York City run by multi billionaire Arthur Case. Although
the film is a thriller and contains bits of action and suspense, the movie focuses
heavily on the difference between good and evil. The movie begins with a shot in

As the film unfolds, the audience learns that although there were financial morals
fueling the master plan, there was also the desire to bring justice upon a man that
had betrayed and cheated his way to the top, thus giving the audience a sense of
righteousness in what Russell was doing. Russell had become not only the man
literally inside the bank, but inside the lies of Case with the means to expose them.
This alignment serves to form a sort of paradoxical allegiance in which although
the audience understands he is the leader of a criminal group, he is also uncovering
the secrets of an evil man and thus somewhat proving his innocence. This same
allegiance causes the audience to enjoy the conclusion, both out of respect for the
intelligence of the plan and because of his ability to escape with the documents and
potentially to uncover the awful past of Arthur Case. Although Ms. White s
thoughts are never truly expressed in the film, she plays a huge role in the
formation of the plot. Recognition of Ms. White comes easily for the fact that she is
a woman, and she is of power. An important aspect of her appearance is her clothing,
being that in every shot she is shown wearing formal clothing and more importantly;
heels. The clothing and heels serve to portray her as an
Tsunamis Essay
Environmental Science
Tsunamis
A tsunami (soo NAH mee) is a series of waves that occur in an ocean or other large
body of water and that are caused by some activity that displaces big amounts of
water. Tsunami is the Japanese word for quot;harbor wave. quot;
Earthquakes that occur on the seafloor or in coastal areas usually cause tsunamis.
The energy generated by the earthquake is transmitted through the water. In deep
oceans the energy in these seismic sea waves can travel virtually unnoticed because
the wave height may be only twelve inches. When this energy reaches the shallow
waters of coastlines, bays, or harbors, it forces the water into a giant wave. Some ...

Fishermen twenty miles out to sea didn t notice the wave pass under their boats
because it only had a height at the time of about fifteen inches. They were totally
unprepared for the devastation that awaited them when they returned to the port of
Sanriku. Twenty eight thousand people were killed and 170 miles of coastline were
destroyed by the wave that had passed under them.
Tsunamis in deep water can have a wavelength greater than 300 miles (500
2)
kilometers) and a period of about an hour. This is very different from the normal
California tube, which generally has a wavelength of about 300 feet (100 meters)
and a time of about ten seconds. (The period of a wave is the time between two
successive waves.) Tsunamis are shallow water waves, which means that the ratio
between water depth and wavelength is very small. These shallow water waves
move at a speed equal to the square root of the product of the acceleration of gravity
(9.8m/s/s) and the water depth.
The deeper the water, the faster and shorter the wave is. For example, when the
ocean is
20,000 feet deep, a tsunami travels at 550 miles per hour. At this speed, the wave can
compete with a jet airplane, traveling across the ocean in less than a day.
Another important factor in considering tsunamis is the rate at which they lose
energy. Because a wave loses energy at a rate inversely related to its

Tennis Court Oath Essay
To what extent did Jacobins during the French Revolution influence Karl Marx in his
development of the idea of Proletariat Revolution in Marxism?
Identification and Evaluation of Sources
Through my initial investigation I discovered a painting of the Tennis Court Oath, by
Jacques Louis David, and a book, The Age of Revolution, written by Eric Hobsbawm.
The Tennis Court Oath depicts the pledge of the Third Estate to write their own
constitution against the Estates General, and the book contains a small analysis of
the French Revolution. The Age of Revolution analyses the more radical parts of the
French Revolution, with some insight into the Jacobin objectives.
The Tennis Court Oath, being a primary source and made during the time of the
French Revolution, allows for a decently accurate account of the event. The oath took
place at Versailles in 1789, following the clash of the First and Second Estates with
the Third Estate. The painter, David, was a French revolutionary.... Show more

Jacobin ideals were centered around a hope for equality and freedom throughout
the world (Hobsbawm 69 76). The Jacobin ideas brought together, as can be seen in
David s Tennis Court Oath, the third estate, which was desperate to achieve liberty
and equality, because of its previous tradition of mistreatment by the first and second
estate (David; Robespierre speech). This idea of the third estate joining together is
also seen in Marx s works. The continued neglect of the combined forces of the
individuals within the third estate was, thought by Marx and acted out by the
Jacobins, to lead to revolution in which the individuals would seek out equality.
However, in reality, the Jacobins were mostly concerned with replacing the monarchy
with a republic. Marx, on the other hand, believed a full communist state would

Respiratory disorder, mostly affect the upper or lower respiratory tract, however
bacterial or viral infection are the causative agent and the disease is common in all
ages. In addition, the lungs and the bronchi can also be affected, causing
inflammation and obstruction of the airflow resulting in wheezing, chest tightness,
stridor, low grade fever, cough, and hemoptysis due severe damage to the lung tissues.
Most common diseases of the respiratory system include; pneumonia, croup, asthma,
bronchitis, laryngitis, and tuberculosis, affected disease location determines the signs
and symptoms. Hereditary and environmental factors such as allergens and other
irritants can be a contributory factor, especially in children. However, respiratory
compromise occur as a result of incomplete airway development among this
vulnerable population predisposing them to chronic asthma (Huether McCance, 2012).
The purpose of this paper is to describe the pathophysiology of chronic asthma and
acute asthma exacerbation, with explanation of arterial blood gas pattern during an
asthma exacerbation. Also, explain how ethnicity might impact pathophysiology of
asthma and asthma exacerbation. The diagnosis and treatment plan needed to relieve
the presented signs and symptoms will be reviewed. Lastly, constructs two mind

Feminism In The Bell Jar
Marco is not successful in his attempted rape of Esther. Though his assault has
detrimental effects on her mental stability, he does not break her or destroy her.
However, Buddy succeeds in shifting the focus of the gaze to be socially oppressive.
In The Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood is a woman of the 1950s who goes against the
belief that women should marry; in fact, she declares, I m never going to get married
(Plath 93) while being proposed to by Buddy Willard. In his proposal, Buddy asks the
question, How would you like to be Mrs. Buddy Willard? (92). In other words, he
asks her if she would like to serve as an extension of himself. He is adhering to the
Victorian notions of marriage. Her identity of Esther Greenwood will be erased with
her marriage to Buddy Willard. Not only does society want Esther to succumb to
her inferiority, but a specific man does as well. Society s convictions in regards to
women were so powerful that they entrenched themselves into the mind of a man
Esther knew since childhood. These convictions aid Buddy in taking on the
oppressive form of the male gaze. He does not view her sexually, but rather as
something for him to own someone for him to stamp his own name onto.
In Aunt Jennifer s Tigers, Aunt Jennifer does not serve as her own narrator, but is
rather analyzed through the eyes of who is presumed to be her niece. Rich purposely
denounces the male gaze by allowing for a woman to look upon another woman. She
removes all sexual undertones
The Specter Of Lessons In The Holocaust
The Holocaust has an ambiguity in holding lessons, which appear endless. It
reinforces the justification of the idea that the past holds lessons for the present. It
creates the idea that if the lesson is not learned it is at our peril. However, there is
no universal lesson gleaned from the Holocaust, that is convincing enough to justify
the current obsession of studying it. Rather, it is the collective memory of
oppression and the specter of comparison, that has made us chose to believe that
there is a universal lesson to be learned.
The specter of comparisons affects our understanding of the past and the present. The
specter the ghost of the past affects our view of the present, but also the present
effects our view of the past. The Holocaust like other historical events is affected
by this specter of comparisons. In attempting to find lessons in the Holocaust the
past becomes haunted by the present. It is looking at the present with incurable
double vision , as we see both the past and the present; it is like looking through the
end of an inverted telescope. This need for lessons is aided by seeing the past in the
present. The search for lessons leaves the danger of getting caught in a loop of the
past and present surrounding the Holocaust. It leaves the possibility of constantly
being haunted by the past and letting past oppressions be our definitions of ourselves
in the present.
Christopher Browning is haunted by the past. In a review of Hitler: Ascent
The Importance Of Greek Columns In Ancient Rome
The Greeks had amazing concepts that you can now find in many modern American
civilizations, but what did they do to get their inventions and ideas spread across the
world? They brought forth ideas such as, architecture, sports, democracy, arts,
mathematics and philosophy.
When you see modern buildings such as The White House, The Abraham Lincoln
Memorial or The U.S Capital, they all have one thing in common...columns. Columns
originate from Greek architecture to support ceilings without the obligation of having
walls, creating more space. Many of the different columns originated from Ancient
Greece, three to be exact, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Doric columns have wider
bottoms and simple capitals (capitals are the top part of the column) ... Show more

Understanding the Background of Meeting at an Airport
by...
It is possible to understand certain pieces of literature outside its historical context;
however, it is more beneficial if the reader has background knowledge. Taha
Muhammad Ali was a Palestinian poet that was born in 1931. He grew up in
Saffuriya, Galilee which is located in the Middle East. Ali was self taught through his
readings of classical Arabic literature, American fiction, and English poetry. Ali then
began to write poems in the 1970s. He wrote a poem entitled Meeting at an Airport
which is based on his personal experiences. Without knowing his background
information and history, it is unclear about what exactly is meant by this poem. This
piece of literature elicits the sense of reconnection and the exact same feelings for
each other just like the first time they met. In the poem, Meeting at an Airport written
by Taha Muhammad Ali, historical context is needed to understand this piece because
it emphasizes the theme, the purpose of the poem, and establishes credibility ( Poetry
Foundation ). When a reader grasps a theme throughout any piece of literature, he or
she never clearly understands the intent without knowing where the theme came
from. The theme that is portrayed in the poem is, often times reconnecting with a

The Philosophy Of St. Thomas Aquinas
St. Thomas Aquinas was an influential philosopher who strongly incorporated faith
into his philosophy. In his Summa Theologiae, Aquinas uses his own arguments
along with those of both Aristotle and Plato to strengthen his claims. First and

existence of God. However, Aquinas also extends his argument past the initial claim
of God and Christianity, and it is here where he uses these other influential
philosophers to help support his claims and arguments. Right away in Basic Works,
Aquinas jumps straight to the biggest issue regarding religion does God exist?
Immediately in his philosophical argumentation he focuses on his faith. Regarding
this question, Aquinas first explains the notion God being self evident. Aquinas
divides propositions into two categories being propositions that are self evident in
themselves but which are not known to us because we do not know what the terms
of the proposition really mean, and propositions which are self evident in themselves
and known to us because we do. Aquinas goes on to explain that the proposition that

Introduction The complexity of health care is increasing greatly in the 21st century.
Paradox and unpredictability are always existent in complicated systems. Moreover,
there are often unknowable things in such systems. Practically, the experience of the
enormous complexity results in disillusionment and frustration. Flexible and creative
approaches to health care must take the place of the traditional health care
complexities. New tools and concepts should be provided to face the challenges of
health care. To keep up with the accelerating complexity in health care, we must react
to the emergent opportunities and patterns with flexibility. In other words,... Show

Recently, healthcare activities are characterized among the complex systems. The
article attempts to give a definition to the word complexity . It has a loose meaning,
starting from not simple and up to complicated and intractable. Modern trends
recommend further research on the study of the environments as well as the
complicated and correlated components and sub components of the complex system
of healthcare. The article also describes the decomposability of complex health care
systems with a view to make it easy for researches to carry out further studies in this
particular field. The article is a good attempt to make the approach of managing,

I Am Truly A Believer That Education
I am truly a believer that education is the solution to break the cycle of generational
poverty. It was such a coincidence that I was assigned to play the role of a public
school teacher in the Poverty simulation. This paper explains my actions and
decisions as the public school teacher and how my action and decisions could have
impacted individuals, families and the community. Finally, I conclude this paper with
my recommendation as a business leader to address povertylocally and regionally.
Actions/Decisions
First few minutes into the simulation it was difficult for me to visualize my class
mates as suffering from poverty. When I looked at the name tag my class mates
were wearing, which had a picture, name and age of a real person, it changed my
whole perspective to the simulation. Each of them had a story and it became too
real too soon that these were real people out there with real problems. I had a 16
year old girl in my class who was 7 months pregnant and was unable to locate her
body friend. Didn t have a clue of how she was going to take care of her baby, how
she is going to pay her hospital bills and what she was going to do to have a
sustainable income at the age of 16 to take care of a baby. She was looking to me
for assistance and guidance. I was truly overwhelmed with the number of students in
my class and only had the time and resource to do just the bare minimum. This girl
was an intelligent and good student. As her teacher I had an opportunity to guide

The ones that this paper will be covering are the Bronfenbrenner s Ecological Systems, nature and nurture influences and cultural influences. I have also given my own personal influence to further demonstrate my understanding of each idea. The Bronfenbrenner s Ecological Systems is a model created by psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner that refers to five structures of which an individual interacts with that impacts their development. The structures are referred to as systems in the model and there are five systems: Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem, Chronosystem. The Microsystem refers to the environment that has a direct influence on an individual; school, home, place of worship, teachers, and peers are included in the Microsystem. A personal example is that my mother, an extremely prominent figure in any person s Microsystem, noticed that I had a rather good potential for working on creative stories. As a direct influence on me, she gave me praise on the stories that I showed her and gave me encouragement to continue working on my writing. Therefore, she directly influenced my psychological development since her praise heightened my self esteem and allowed me to have a good self image of myself thanks to the environment I was raised in. The Mesosystem refers to the interactions that occur between the systems, such as how one s school life interacts with one s home life.

Abuse and neglect can be damaging not only throughout childhood but also throughout adolescence, adulthood, and even the next generation as well. Erik Erikson s psychosocial theory helps better understand the internal thoughts throughout the lifetime of those who have been abused and neglected during childhood. Erikson s psychosocial theory has many stages that focus on different parts of a person s lifetime such as Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Intimacy vs. Isolation, and Generativity vs. Stagnation. Erikson s stage, Intimacy vs. Isolation is discussing how adults either want to be with and around with others or become isolated and reject others company. This stage provides some insight into the rejection or acceptance of the children of the abused. Most of the time the children of the abused do not get the attention they need due to the intimacy issues of their parents (Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p. 16). Erikson s stage Trust vs. Mistrust can go along with this point as well. If the parent is neglecting the child, the child will not get what it needs from the parent. Therefore, the child will have a problem trusting others later on in their lifetime (Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p. 17). Another one of Erikson s stages, Generativity vs. Stagnation is discussing how adults either want to contribute to their children meaningfully or not at all. Most of the children in this study get no positive contribution from their parents. Erikson s stage Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt , can help better understand this point. If the parent does not spend time with their child they can also keep their child from learning abilities and skills that they need to know. If the child does not learn the necessary skills required to do certain and basic things, they may begin to doubt their own

The theory discusses how individuals in the age group of 20 to 40 are attempting to establish meaningful relationships with other people (Erikson handout, 2017). Success at this stage includes strong relationships, being able to maintain friendships, and physical and emotional intimacy, while failure to resolve the conflict resulted in loneliness and isolation (Erikson handout, 2017). The conflict at this stage is representative of socially constructed expectations of gender roles and cultural expectations, which does not account for several groups. This traditional framework of development does not align with modern development of lifespan. In the Anglo Caribbean countries (except Guyana), the first past the post system elects the members of parliament, a majority of whom nominate the prime minister. In the Latin Caribbean and Guyana the electoral formula is more complicated, often including proportional representation and either an indirectly or directly elected president. Caribbean electoral systems reflect the influence of the former colonial powers and national circumstances such as the racial composition of the population. Elections and electoral systems aim at converting the popular will expressed as votes into choices between candidates of political parties for political offices in the executive and legislature. The electoral system therefore reflects itself in the party system and the structure of governmental representation. This association between elections, parties and government takes different forms. Iceland s economic crisis shares a common bond with those that have infected other developed economies recently: all have banking systems heavily engaged in the practice of maturity mismatching. In other words, Icelandic banks issued short term liabilities in order to invest in long term assets, a practice which created funding gaps (i.e., liabilities less assets) of a given maturity for the three largest Icelandic banks Kaupthing, Glitnir, and Landsbanki. Thus, the banking system had to continuously roll over (renew) their short term liabilities until their long term assets fully matured. If an event arose whereby Icelandic banks failed to find new borrowers to continue rolling over their liabilities, they could face a liquidity crisis and, more importantly, spark the collapse of the Icelandic financial system; recent events have borne out this exact scenario. The Icelandic banking collapse resulted from two major causes: inadequate regulation of its central bank, and the inadequate size of their cash value of their banks. Regarding the first, the great error of the bank controller was to focus control efforts on the fight against inflation. This created an atmosphere conducive to speculators who had their money in Iceland, and who were attracted by the extremely high interest rates and a

In order to rebut the revolutionaries, he wrote a long article to the Chinese Business Association in America to explain the ideas of ethnic sovereignty and cultural attitude. In this article, he had three major points about the Chinese identity. First, Kang felt that promoting Han nationalism was the weirdest thing in the world because the Manchus and Han had already formed a nation for more than 200 years. Kang said that the Qing Dynasty did not discriminate against the Han people and allowed them to work in the government. He thought that almost nobody had questioned the authority of the Qing Dynasty in the past 200 years. Second, Kang then argued that if the revolutionaries used ethnicity or race to define Chinaor Chinese nationalism, there would be no real Chinese since in history the Han Chinesehad many intermarriages with different ethnic groups. In the Spring and Autumn period, Confucius had already used culture to define Chinese identity and Kang believed that most Chinese intellectuals accepted this standard. Kang cited many historical events from the Era of Disunity and claimed how culture could unify different ethnic groups in China. Therefore, Kang promoted his Confucianism which ruled that if one practiced Confucianism, he or she was Chinese. He believed that as long as minority groups such as the Manchus accepted

Analysis of the Film Inside Man Essay Patrick Carruthers Neupert Film Studies The True Inside Man Inside Man was released in 2006 and would later become the highest grossing film for the director Spike Lee. The film is a crime drama, located primarily in a bank in New York City run by multi billionaire Arthur Case. Although the film is a thriller and contains bits of action and suspense, the movie focuses heavily on the difference between good and evil. The movie begins with a shot in medias res of Clive Owen s character Dalton Russell explaining the difference between being stuck in a tiny cell and being in prison while he moves around a small room ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the film unfolds, the audience learns that although there were financial morals fueling the master plan, there was also the desire to bring justice upon a man that had betrayed and cheated his way to the top, thus giving the audience a sense of righteousness in what Russell was doing. Russell had become not only the man literally inside the bank, but inside the lies of Case with the means to expose them. This alignment serves to form a sort of paradoxical allegiance in which although the audience understands he is the leader of a criminal group, he is also uncovering the secrets of an evil man and thus somewhat proving his innocence. This same allegiance causes the audience to enjoy the conclusion, both out of respect for the intelligence of the plan and because of his ability to escape with the documents and potentially to uncover the awful past of Arthur Case. Although Ms. White s thoughts are never truly expressed in the film, she plays a huge role in the formation of the plot. Recognition of Ms. White comes easily for the fact that she is a woman, and she is of power. An important aspect of her appearance is her clothing, being that in every shot she is shown wearing formal clothing and more importantly; heels. The clothing and heels serve to portray her as an
  • 33. Tsunamis Essay Environmental Science Tsunamis A tsunami (soo NAH mee) is a series of waves that occur in an ocean or other large body of water and that are caused by some activity that displaces big amounts of water. Tsunami is the Japanese word for quot;harbor wave. quot; Earthquakes that occur on the seafloor or in coastal areas usually cause tsunamis. The energy generated by the earthquake is transmitted through the water. In deep oceans the energy in these seismic sea waves can travel virtually unnoticed because the wave height may be only twelve inches. When this energy reaches the shallow waters of coastlines, bays, or harbors, it forces the water into a giant wave. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fishermen twenty miles out to sea didn t notice the wave pass under their boats because it only had a height at the time of about fifteen inches. They were totally unprepared for the devastation that awaited them when they returned to the port of Sanriku. Twenty eight thousand people were killed and 170 miles of coastline were destroyed by the wave that had passed under them. Tsunamis in deep water can have a wavelength greater than 300 miles (500 2) kilometers) and a period of about an hour. This is very different from the normal California tube, which generally has a wavelength of about 300 feet (100 meters) and a time of about ten seconds. (The period of a wave is the time between two successive waves.) Tsunamis are shallow water waves, which means that the ratio between water depth and wavelength is very small. These shallow water waves move at a speed equal to the square root of the product of the acceleration of gravity (9.8m/s/s) and the water depth. The deeper the water, the faster and shorter the wave is. For example, when the ocean is 20,000 feet deep, a tsunami travels at 550 miles per hour. At this speed, the wave can compete with a jet airplane, traveling across the ocean in less than a day. Another important factor in considering tsunamis is the rate at which they lose energy. Because a wave loses energy at a rate inversely related to its

Identification and Evaluation of Sources Through my initial investigation I discovered a painting of the Tennis Court Oath, by Jacques Louis David, and a book, The Age of Revolution, written by Eric Hobsbawm. The Tennis Court Oath depicts the pledge of the Third Estate to write their own constitution against the Estates General, and the book contains a small analysis of the French Revolution. The Age of Revolution analyses the more radical parts of the French Revolution, with some insight into the Jacobin objectives. The Tennis Court Oath, being a primary source and made during the time of the French Revolution, allows for a decently accurate account of the event. The Jacobin ideas brought together, as can be seen in David s Tennis Court Oath, the third estate, which was desperate to achieve liberty and equality, because of its previous tradition of mistreatment by the first and second estate (David; Robespierre speech). This idea of the third estate joining together is also seen in Marx s works. The continued neglect of the combined forces of the individuals within the third estate was, thought by Marx and acted out by the Jacobins, to lead to revolution in which the individuals would seek out equality. However, in reality, the Jacobins were mostly concerned with replacing the monarchy with a republic. Marx, on the other hand, believed a full communist state would emerge from

In his proposal, Buddy asks the question, How would you like to be Mrs. Buddy Willard? (92). In other words, he asks her if she would like to serve as an extension of himself. He is adhering to the Victorian notions of marriage. Her identity of Esther Greenwood will be erased with her marriage to Buddy Willard. Not only does society want Esther to succumb to her inferiority, but a specific man does as well. Society s convictions in regards to women were so powerful that they entrenched themselves into the mind of a man Esther knew since childhood. These convictions aid Buddy in taking on the oppressive form of the male gaze. He does not view her sexually, but rather as something for him to own someone for him to stamp his own name onto. In Aunt Jennifer s Tigers, Aunt Jennifer does not serve as her own narrator, but is rather analyzed through the eyes of who is presumed to be her niece. • 39. The Specter Of Lessons In The Holocaust The Holocaust has an ambiguity in holding lessons, which appear endless. It reinforces the justification of the idea that the past holds lessons for the present. It creates the idea that if the lesson is not learned it is at our peril. However, there is no universal lesson gleaned from the Holocaust, that is convincing enough to justify the current obsession of studying it. Rather, it is the collective memory of oppression and the specter of comparison, that has made us chose to believe that there is a universal lesson to be learned. The specter of comparisons affects our understanding of the past and the present. The specter the ghost of the past affects our view of the present, but also the present effects our view of the past. The Holocaust like other historical events is affected by this specter of comparisons. In attempting to find lessons in the Holocaust the past becomes haunted by the present. It is looking at the present with incurable double vision , as we see both the past and the present; it is like looking through the end of an inverted telescope. This need for lessons is aided by seeing the past in the present. The search for lessons leaves the danger of getting caught in a loop of the past and present surrounding the Holocaust. It leaves the possibility of constantly being haunted by the past and letting past oppressions be our definitions of ourselves in the present. Christopher Browning is haunted by the past. • 42. The Philosophy Of St. Thomas Aquinas St. Thomas Aquinas was an influential philosopher who strongly incorporated faith into his philosophy. In his Summa Theologiae, Aquinas uses his own arguments along with those of both Aristotle and Plato to strengthen his claims. First and foremost, Aquinas uses his own philosophy to back the Christian faith and the existence of God. However, Aquinas also extends his argument past the initial claim of God and Christianity, and it is here where he uses these other influential philosophers to help support his claims and arguments. Right away in Basic Works, Aquinas jumps straight to the biggest issue regarding religion does God exist? Immediately in his philosophical argumentation he focuses on his faith. Regarding this question, Aquinas first explains the notion God being self evident. Aquinas divides propositions into two categories being propositions that are self evident in themselves but which are not known to us because we do not know what the terms of the proposition really mean, and propositions which are self evident in themselves and known to us because we do. Aquinas goes on to explain that the proposition that God exists is self evident in itself because the predicate is identical with the subject and that since we don t know what God is, the proposition is not self evident to us but rather must be demonstrated to us though what is more evident to us (Question 2, Article 1). Aquinas goes on to explain that there are two types of demonstrations with one
