Extinction Of The Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon rainforest has been in existence for approximately fifty five million years. The climate
that followed the extinction of the dinosaurs allowed the forest to spread all over the continent. In
addition, the climate changes that have occurred in the past thirty four million years have allowed the
savanna type biome to spread into the forest. The rainforest was, at first, believed to be inhospitable
for human life since it s soil was considered poor. However, humans started to live in the forest about
11,200 years ago. The forest is home of many dangerous animals such as jaguars and anacondas. Not
only that, but it is one of the biomes with more species diversity. Deforestation was not an issue before
1960. Access to the rainforest was

Social Work Practice Session Essay
The practice session for the skills demonstration assignment consisted of six individuals (3 couples)
who are all close friends of the facilitator. These individuals imitated their ideals of a serious
relationship between two people experiencing problems between one another, and seeking help from
couples therapy in order to overcome these problems. The Social Learning Theory was the theoretical
framework used during this practice session along with the Current Social Work Practice Model. The
Social Learning Theory, according to Theories, Models, and Perspectives (2016), suggests, Human
behavior is learned as individuals interact with their environment and that Problem behavior is
maintained by positive or negative reinforcement. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the fact that group members during this practice session were close friends, I was required to
use competency skill one. This skill requires social workers to identify as a professional social worker
and conduct oneself accordingly by demonstrating professional demeanor in behavior, appearance,
and communication. In other words, I needed to behave and communicate with these friends in a
professional manner like I would if I were facilitating the group with actual clients. Crossing my
professional boundaries was a challenge due to the fact that I was not familiar with presenting a
professional demeanor around close friends. Also, during the practice session I noticed personal values
was a boundary that was challenging to manage. This is because I have grown comfortable sharing
personal information and opinions with my friends. Therefore, it was a challenge practicing proper
personal disclosure during the practice session. It is important for a group facilitator to be able to
properly disclose because group sessions are for the betterment of clients; not an opportunity for
he/she to share personal stories and opinions. In other words, group session is for clients, not for the
group facilitator. These were some of the challenges noticed during the practice session for facilitating
a couple s therapy group

Pros And Cons Of Human Trafficking
Human trafficking has become one and the same with prostitution and sex work. However human
trafficking engulfs other types such as labor trafficking which involves the obtaining, harboring,
recruitment, and transportation of people for labor or services. These are the two types most thought of
but there are eight classifications of human trafficking, and they include: forced labor, sex trafficking,
bonded labor, debt bondage among migrants, involuntary domestic servitude, forced child soldiers,
and child sex trafficking (Dalton, 2013). These types of human trafficking are modern day slavery and
they are not an isolated problem, it occurs all over the world and generates billions of dollars in
revenue. Over the past decade the internet has given growth and expansion to this issue of human
trafficking through websites such as Backpage and Craigslist. These are just a few of the sites used in
the solicitation of humans.
The issue has become whether we can hold these third parties criminally liable in these cases. The
Communication Decency Act attempts to regulate indecent and obscene material on the internet but
Section 230 of this Act states that operators of internet service cannot be held liable for the words third
parties the utilize their services. This has only been denied when the website actually had a part in the
design and publication of the advertisements used in human trafficking. Organizations have banned
with websites in support of this fight. They

As A Matter Of Opinion The Second Film Does A Better Job
As a matter of opinion the second film does a better job of delving into the story than the original
movie. While watching the first film there are a lot of things that are done by characters that leave
unanswered questions. The film only tells the overlying story of the chocolate factory and lacks depth
past Wonka s character. The second film digs deep into Wonka s past and explains why he became a
Chocolate maker through his father who was a dentist and despised candy. The added storyline about
Wonka s past creates a more in depth storyline which includes a lot of intertwined stories. The original
just tells the stories as is, but the newer film adds the element of flashbacks and uses them a lot. The
flashbacks help the viewer get caught ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So yes the Oompa Loompas are technically slaves and Willy Wonka is the master who gains his
wealth from their work and keeps them from obtaining knowledge of the outside world by keeping
them inside the locked gates of the factory. Grandpa Joe introduces the audience to the labor issues at
Wonka s factory while Wonka s origin tale of the Oompa Loompas conveys the power dynamic
between Wonka and the Oompa Loompas. Also the Oompa Loompas never tell their own story, only
do the others tell their story. (Corbin) With the Grandpa Joe s story it can be concluded that the poor
economic status in which the Bucket family is in, was caused by Wonka s firing of all of his
employees. In the 1971 film the Oompa Loompas are small, orange skinned, and green haired men.
This is because the film came out shortly after the Civil Rights movement. Dahl himself changed them
so that they would not represent a specific group of people, but instead be cute chocolate making
characters with goofy outfits and green hair. In the 2005 film the te three thousand Oompa Loompas
worker are all acted out by one actor and then computer generated into the film. During the time of the
second film, technology and the internet were booming. With the use of technology, India offered
intelligent people to the workforce. This offered people skilled labor without physical presence of
racialized labor (Corbin). The Oompa Loompas are now depicted as Indians and are

Lesser Animals In Animal Farm
Everyone has a point in his life where they find something to be absolutely ridiculous, whether it is the
opposal to gay marriage or the new hoverboard that everyone seems to have nowadays. Some people
choose to keep these thoughts to themselves and some choose to demonstrate their feelings like
George Orwell did with his satirical novel Animal Farm. With the largely avoidable hardships of the
animals representing the Soviet Union s working class, the naivete of these animals, and how the
events throughout the novel parallel the history of the Soviet Union, Orwell demonstrates through the
lesser animals in Animal Farm that he agrees that it is the responsibility of the public to know what the
government is doing at all times and that it is absurd to just blindly follow. Through the hardships of
the animals that could have easily been avoided if the government was more carefully managed,
Orwell illustrates this agreement that it is the responsibility of the public to know what the
government is doing at all times. Orwell demonstrates his feelings on the preposterity of the ignorant
lesser animals that represent communist Russia s working class when the ... Show more content on

An example of this is when Snowball is chased out by Napoleon s nine dogs: [he] slipped through a
hole in the hedge and was seen no more (Orwell 53). This event parallels how the KGB in Russia
chased Leon Trotsky out of Russia and exiled and assassinated him. Orwell demonstrates that because
no one knew what Napoleon was doing with Bluebell s puppies, this event was largely unavoidable,
which compliments the idea that the public has the responsibility of knowing what the government is
doing at all times in all instances. Another example of a parallel to history is when the Fourth
Commandment mentioned sheets; but as it was there on the wall, it must have done so (Orwell

My Writing Course Reflection
I began this course with goals to significantly improve my writing. I knew there were challenges for
me to overcome, because I have not written much at all since high school, which has been more than
twenty four years ago. Nonetheless, I was up for the challenge and each week I made sure to do
exactly as instructed in the weekly syllabus, reading each every assignment very carefully. At first I
felt overwhelmed, but as I completed the homework and discussion post assignments for the weeks
prior to the major papers, the overwhelming feelings subsided and I concentrated on each task at hand.
The homework and class work did not come easy for me, but completing the reading assignments
really helped me to understand what I needed to accomplish. I made sure to be engaged in the
discussion board posts, so that I would be able to obtain feedback from others. Keeping up with the
writing assignments was a major priority for me as well, because I was hopeful to find out which areas
I would really need to focus on to be able to do a good job on major papers. Likewise, peer revisions
proved to be a great way to seek input for improvement, I made sure to participate in each one, and it
paid off. The discussion board posts, the writing assignments, and the peer revisions all helped me to

outlines. I would even re write those if needed. I think making those changes going forward, are what
helped me improve on my future papers. There were many other tools that helped also, but focusing

Thomas Jefferson s Accomplishments
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 on his father s plantation in Shadwell, Virginia. He
spent his first years on the plantation helping his father with small tasks, but at age nine he began his
formal education which would be the foundation for hi s many great accomplishments. From the
beginning of his education to age sixteen, Jefferson spent nine months out of the year with a minister
teacher. And just 16 years before the U.S. declared independence from England, he took classes at the
College of William and Mary. There he studied rhetoric, science, philosophy, mathematics, and
literature. After two years of studying at the College of William and Mary, Jefferson then went on to
learn about legal studies under George Wythe, who also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This meant that the taxes were less for the people, but he explained that some taxes were necessary for
the sake of farmers, mechanics, laborers, and to nourish foreign relations. He also expressed the
importance of the Louisiana Purchase to the American people who had doubts about it. Jefferson s
reasoning to ensure this was a good choice was that it has/will lead to great exploration farther west.
He continued that it has also led to friendly intercourse with the Native Americans. Nevertheless,
Jefferson stayed true to the status quo of racist ideologies of that time by mentioning that whites were
still superior to the Native Americans. He then went on to say that although inferior, they would still
be protected. One of the main principles that Jefferson serves under is the importance of freedom of
religion and he does not fail to acknowledge that in his address. Through the course of his political
career, Jefferson has always believed that religious freedom was very important. In the address,
Jefferson has grievances about the press and speaks on length about it. The press s difference of
opinions about Jefferson makes him irritated, yet he understand their

Japan s War Crimes During The World War II
Introduction: Nowadays, Japanese animes are becoming increasingly famous, and America is not an
exception for anime s gigantic worldwide fandom. Animes, such as One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and
Attack on Titan, are the main leaders of the anime wave sweeping all over the world. Nevertheless,
many Japanese animes are often criticized at the same time for employing the idea of neo nationalism
or indirectly mentioning justifications for Japan s war crimes during the World War II. Although they
are not really noticeable to most of the audience, the author of a famous anime, Attack on Titan,
Hajime Isayama demonstrated that such neo nationalist factors actually exist in animes when he
showed a strong support towards Japan s past aggressive wars and colonialism in his SNS. However,
not all animes are showing support towards neo nationalism in Japan. An anime, Terror in Resonance,
directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, not only criticizes Japan s war crimes during the World War II, but
also condemns current Japanese government s policies encouraging neo nationalism. The anime well
demonstrates that the neo nationalist movement in Japan is not Japan s own problem, but it is rather a
serious international problem that will affect Japan s relationship with other countries. Furthermore,
the anime focuses on increasing people s awareness on unjustifiable neo nationalist movement of
Japanese government. Although many right winged Japanese people victimize post World War II

Youth Marketing
After a moving target by Jo Bowman 5 Nov 04, 08:49 Asia s youth may be a moving target but
targeted traditional media, from print to radio, can still work Parents used to bemoan the fact that their
kids were constantly glued to the set; now they despair that young people don t seem to focus on
anything for more than a few minutes. Sure, they re still watching TV, but no longer are they couch
potatoes, absorbing everything that flashes across the screen; they re flicking channels, flicking
through a magazine, texting their friends or moving to a PC a growing culture of impatience that
began with the remote control and is now seen to an extreme degree in the region s young. For

In India, the TV line up for younger children has grown this year, with the launch of Cartoon Network
s sister channel Pogo, with programming ranging from Barney Friends for pre schoolers, up to Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone and the animated Mr Bean series for older children. While in Thailand,
Virgin Radio Asia has just launched two new radio stations aimed at young listeners. Stations in the
northern university city, Chiang Mai, and on the holiday island of Ko Samui, are in addition to the
four stations Virgin has launched in Bangkok since entering the Thai market two years ago. Content
for Chiang Mai will be based on the Bangkok station Virgin Hitz, with a focus on top 40 popular
music, and on Ko Samui will broadcast easy listening music to help listeners kick back in tropical
paradise , Virgin says. Radio technology predates TV, and is well behind the days of MMS and video
streaming, but its affordability and portability makes it a good choice if not necessarily a favourite for
youth marketers. Radio is huge for this market, says Ian Stewart, CEO of youth brand specialist
marketers The Filter Group. We re big supporters of radio because the fact is young people are at
home doing their studying, there s only one TV in the house and that s being watched by everybody
else, so they put the radio on. And when they re older, they re spending hours in the car commuting

An Examination of Festinger s Cognitive Dissonance Theory...
An Examination of Festinger s Cognitive Dissonance Theory and Notable Modifications
Sometimes the greatest test of a theory is its longevity. Over time, some theories will be disproved,
some will be modified, and some will become the basis for a whole new group of theories. Leon
Festinger s theory of cognitive dissonance has stood up to challenge for over forty years, and is
considered by many to be the single most important theory of social psychology. Though there have
been modifications to the theory after many recreations and simulations of the original 1957
experiment, few have been able to really disqualify Festinger s findings. It would be safe to say that
many people don t even have a full grasp of the incredible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In conclusion, Festinger found that the subjects who were paid one dollar actually came to believe that
the experiment was enjoyable, as opposed to those who were paid twenty dollars. Incredible? Simple.
The subjects who were paid twenty dollars have all the justification in the world for their actions, but
the subjects who were only paid one dollar have reacted to the dissonance created by telling the lie for
such a small price, and have actually led themselves to believe that the task was enjoyable to improve
their self esteem in regards to the lie.
Festinger concluded that over time dissonance would change attitudes. For example, cigarette smokers
know that it is unhealthy to smoke, but they created an attitude to justify why they continue to smoke.
If I quit smoking now, I will gain weight. I only smoke when I am drinking. I only smoke after a meal.
But the dissonance theory is applicable to much bigger social opinions than smoking, for example:
Aronson and Mills (1959) conducted an experiment in which some subjects were put through a harsh
period of hazing during initiation into a group while other subjects had to endure only mild hazing.
The end result was that the people who went through the sever initiation ended up liking that group a
lot better than those who went through mild hazing. Going against the reinforcement theory (Aronson,

System Of Education Vs American Education
Lifestyles differ throughout generations. It is because of several factors related to people s behaviors,
historical events, social environment, and scientific and technical progress. My upbringing and
schooling experience has some new features different from what had my grandparents in their youth.
Therefore, the American System of Education today and before still focuses on the religious education
and socialization of students through multiple activities. First, my life is similar to the elder s life in
terms of the religious influence throughout the years of education. Municipal authorities built public
schools with the extension to the church, and students went to the church every day. My grandparents
prayed every day before the start of the classes. It is the same experience as I had at school. Moreover,
I entered the Catholic University of America. American education encourages new generations to
share the same Christian values of obedience, discipline, and patience. It has become another
significant part of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, American education is the framework for getting knowledge. It is a system of studies for the
public. Then, the question is: Why should new generations refer to the lifestyles and schooling
experiences of elder generations? This question is rhetorical. However, I think each generation adds to
the improvement of the American System of Education making it more appropriate and multifaceted
in methods and approaches. Therefore, one has to understand the American education in combination
with practical advantages and disadvantages. Another question refers to my upbringing and schooling
background and whether it is the same for other students. Not everyone has a motivation to study
thoroughly and to obey parents. It refers to the social and economic factors splitting the society into
different layers and spreading

Commentary On Speak By Laurie Halse Anderson
1. Teen activist and 2014 Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai said, I raise up my voice not so
that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard . For whom have you raised your
voice? One of the most compelling books I read in my life was called Speak by Laurie Halse
Anderson. It is a story about a young high school girl who was raped by the quarterback of her high
school s football team one night at a party. This immediate damage of this traumatic event was her
ability to speak out about what happened to her that dark night. As an eighth grader, I was very
frustrated at the fact that this young girl had so many opportunities to bring justice to her rape, but
never did all because she was still suffering from her experience. By the end of the book, she finally

to another person. While I am not comparing rape to homosexuality, I am stating I understand the
angst and self hate that the main character of Anderson s book felt. Growing up, I was told being gay
was a one way ticket to Hell and how since God hates faggots, so should I. When discriminatory
remarks like these were made around me, something inside of me shrunk and I instantly became
silent, almost like they were speaking about me. Feelings like these arose years before I came to
understand I was gay, but never would I had thought that certain people, who I

The Case Of The Speluncean Explorers
This essay discusses the theoretical position of the five judges in Fuller s The Case of the Speluncean
Explorers and compare the best embodiment thereof to the decision in R v Dudley and Stephens, upon
which Fuller s article is largely based. Whilst direct references to writings of the relevant theorists will
be made, no critique of either the judges decisions or the theoretical positions thereof will be offered,
nor will lengthy definitions of theoretical positions be provided. Background: Fuller s mythical case
was constructed on stipulated facts with one single applicable statue devoid of legislative history,
whoever shall wilfully take the life of another shall be punished by death thus leaving no room for
argument over facts or legislative materials. Five speluncean explorers were trapped in a cave for
thirty two days without food, water or expectation of imminent rescue. The explorers unanimously
decided to kill one man to provide nourishment to the survivors, with the fate of the condemned to be
decided by rolling a dice. After the dice were rolled but before execution, the condemned man
changed his mind and withdrew from the communal decision. The surviving four men executed the
plan, only to be rescued shortly thereafter and tried for murder with Truepenny CJ, Foster, Tatting,
Keen and Handy JJ presiding. The vote of the court was 2 2 with Tatting J withdrawing, thus affirming
the decision of the trial judge and resulting in the men being sentenced to

Figurative Language In War Of The Worlds
The figurative language used in War of the Worlds was intended to help the reader interpret what was
happening to the narrator. One of the examples of figurative language used by the narrator was when
he was looking out of his window the morning following the falling of the third star and the storm.
Looking outside, he could see that many houses near Maybury Hill had been burned the night before.
To better explain the spectacle, the narrator called those houses glowing ruins. (143). A metaphor is
typically used when something is so undescribable, it can only be best stated by being compared to
something completely different. When I think of houses that had previously been burned, I picture a
dark black house with steam rising from it. However,

Argumentative Speech On The National Anthem
Malcolm Jenkins, safety for the Philadelphia Eagles, supported Kaepernick s message but said, My
grandfather served [in the military]. And this is a country that I love. So, me not standing for the
national anthem isn t really going to get me the results that I want. Therefore, Athletes who refuse to
stand for the national anthem should receive a consequence. For instance, they should get fined or
possibly suspended for a few games.
Refusing to stand for the National Anthem shows disrespect to the flag members of armed forces. For
example, The national anthem pays respect to the people who have risked their lives, been injured, or
died defending the US. Without a doubt, this is 100% true because why should someone be able to
take a knee and disrespect the flag when people risked their lives for us to be free. Yes, that s what the
flag represents but people should never bite the hand that feeds you.The writer of the national anthem
sated, it just blows my mind that somebody like (kaepernick) would do what he does to dishonor the
flag of this country and the national anthem when we have young men and women overseas fighting
for this country, that people have died for. I agree with the evidence stated because I feel like everyone
should pay their respects to everyone who fought for the flag. I understand that you aren t supportive
of the National anthem but I feel as if there s another way you can protest. That s not as disrespectful
for instance, taking a knee before or after the national anthem. Lastly, the New Orleans quarterback,
supported Kaepernick s message but disagreed with the delivery: It s and oxymoron that you re sitting
down, disrespecting that flag that has given you the freedom to speak out. As this being stated I agree
with the New Orleans Quarterback because, again there is another way to protest and at least be smart
about what you re doing.
Not standing for the national anthem is an ineffective and counterproductive way to promote a cause.
For instance, Football coach of Clemson University states I don t think it s good to be a distraction to
your team.. I don t think it s good to use your team as the platform. With this being stated he s saying

Catholic Church when in reign. These are all huge responsibilities and the Pope is judged in every

The insight on women and their specific role amongst the church is what collides. When watching the
PBS film, it states that even though women are very frequent in the church, their role is very small and
not as important as the men. They don t have a specific role nor importance to the church. John Paul
feels this is the correct way to run the system of the church. He believes this due to the fact that men
can become priests and have the highest role in the church. On the other hand, Pope Francis had a big
issue with this topic that he made comments about possibly changing the system in the future.
According to the article by Spadero, he explains Pope Francis view of women in the life of the Church
by stating, The church cannot be herself without the woman and her role. The woman is essential for
the church. Mary, a woman, is more important than the bishops. I say this because we must not
confuse the function with the dignity. We must therefore investigate further the role of women in the
church. We have to work harder to develop a profound theology of the woman. Pope Francis believes
women can make a dramatic difference in the church can help with the real word decisions the church

Epstein Barr Research Paper
Epstein Barr Virus, also known as human herpesvirus type 4, is a common infectious virus that will
affect greater than 85% of the population at least once in their lifetime. The virus was first discovered
by, and named after, Sir Michael Anthony Epstein and Yvonne Mr. Barr in 1964 in the midst of
researching a case of Burkitt s lymphoma. The Epstein Barr virus is predominately found in a host s
saliva, and is transmitted through direct and indirect contact with the infected person s bodily fluids.
Epstein Barr virus (EBV) is responsible for numerous infections that can take place throughout the
body, most commonly acute infectious mononucleosis. Infectious mononucleosis, simply referred to
as mono, is an illness that is directly caused by the Epstein Barr virus and can frequently affect
toddlers, teenagers, and adults. EBV, along with infectious mononucleosis, is primarily spread from
person to person orally through the following acts: kissing, sharing food and drinks, and coming in
contact with contaminated objects, such as toothbrushes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Antibiotics are not usually prescribed to those infected because they are considered an ineffectual
treatment of Epstein Barr virus and its secondary virus, mononucleosis. However, over the counter
medications such as acetaminophen can be taken, but will only reduce fever and pain associated with
symptoms and will not treat the virus itself. Those in the recovering stage will be instructed by a
physician to get a sufficient amount of sleep, stay hydrated, and use pain relievers for any pain and
fevers that may arise. Confirmation of Epstein Barr Virus can come from a mono spot test and
complete blood count (CBC) testing if the mono spot test produces a negative result. Typically, a

How Did The Millet System In The Ottoman Empire
Introduction
The Ottoman Empire was an empire that came to its rise during the year 1299, the empire was a strong
follower of the Islamic religion, they were also one of the biggest reasons for the spreading of the
religion. The Holy crusades ended during the year 1291, this was just a few years before the Ottoman
empire was founded. The Religious wars were far from finished though, religions would keep on
fighting for their beliefs for a long time, even until the current day. The Ottoman Empire did not have
as much discrimination towards other religions though, they instead invited them through a system
called Millet.

Compare Beccaria and Lombroso Essay
Compare 2 Key Thinkers and Their Competing Ideologies.
Criminology is a study of crime, criminals and criminal justice. Ideas about criminal justice and crime
arose in the 18th century during the enlightenment, but criminology as we know it today developed in
the late 19th century. Criminology has been shaped by many different academic disciplines and has
many different approaches. It explores the implications of criminal laws; how they emerge and work,
then how they are violated and what happens to those violators. Laws are relative and historically
shaped; they vary from time to time and from place to place (Carrabine et al, 2009).
This essay will be comparing the competing ideologies of two key thinkers in criminology; Cesare ...

It is better to try and prevent crimes than it is to punish them, this is achieved by good legislation
which guides men to their greatest, or least unhappiness possible (Beccaria, 1767). As mentioned
previously, Beccaria s utilitarian ideology has shaped the justice system in western societies for many
decades. Therefore, Beccaria can be described as a very influential thinker. Without his contribution
we could still have a system of capital punishment, and that is a worrying thought. However, we now
seem fixed with utilitarian justice. It may be argued that it is now time to move towards restorative
justice. There are also those such as Tullock (1974), who argue for a return to harsher sentencing.
Some states in the US still consider the death penalty to be a legitimate punishment. So it can be said
that Beccaria is undoubtedly a key thinker in criminology, but as with all key thinkers he is not
without his critics.
Cesare Lombroso was also Italian but came from a Jewish family and is very different to Beccaria. He
trained as a medical doctor and graduated in 1858. He was a leading contributor in the development of
a positivist criminology which collected and looked into scientific measurements for the explanation
of criminal behaviour and crime (Hayward et al, 2010). Nearly all biological theories stem from
Lombroso and his book The Criminal man published in 1876, although Lombroso enlarged upon and
updated this original publication through five editions

Essay about Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece
Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece
According to history there existed two of many important ancient civilizations that left a significant
mark in the history of human development that even today leaves modern society in awe of its
greatness. In spite of being distant civilizations, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece share similarities
and difference in terms of how they practiced religion, political structure, everyday life style, and how
they built the monumental architectures that continued to amaze the modern world of today. These
comparison and contrast explain their difference in history and their dynasty s long term success.
Through the early developmental age these two ancient civilizations contrasted in many ways perhaps

Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece both believed in life after death, though the process in which they
follow that belief differ greatly. The Greeks believed that at the moment of death the spirit leaves the
body in the form of a little gust of wind or a puff of breath. The Greeks believed in proper burial rights
that were performed in three parts, and the relatives mostly women are the ones that conduct these
rituals for the deceased. Much like the modern world these rituals consist of the first step; laying out
the body to be dressed, the second funeral procession, and the third step was the cremation of the
body. Unlike the Greeks the Egyptians developed a process in which they prepared and preserved the
dead for the afterlife, known as mummification. This process is believed to have been the purpose of
the Egyptians famous pyramids, believed to be the stairs that would lead the Pharaohs to their
kingdom in the afterlife. Artifacts are buried in their tombs such as gold, wine, and sculptures to
accompany the dead in life after death.
As widely admired civilizations both Ancient Egypt and ancient Greece prospered for many years, and
is due to its political governing. In ancient Egypt the Pharaoh was perceived to be the embodiment of
the all mighty sun god, and regarded him as a god himself. Therefore the Pharaoh was the ruler of all
of Egypt and citizens did not have a say in politics. Egyptian class structure is best portrayed by

Suffering In Oedipus The King And Antigone
With Fate Comes Suffering
Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.
(Gibran, Khalil) Khalil Gibran, a famous Lebanese American artist, poet, and writer once spoke a
quote which relates to two Greek tragedies, Oedipus the King and Antigone. The quote analyzes the
tragic characters in each play because they must endure pain before, during, and after their downfalls
in order to grow. In Oedipus the King, written in 430 B.C, Oedipus has been named the king of
Thebes, which is suffering from a plague. He later finds out that he killed his own father and married
his mother named Jocasta whom he had four children with. In Antigone, which focuses on a teenage
girl of the same name, her uncle, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A major misunderstanding is, Ismene also takes the blame for the burial of their brother Polynices.
Ismene confesses, I did it yes / if only she consents I share the guilt, / the consequences too.
(Sophocles, 604 606) This is a misunderstanding because we see Ismene confessing, and Antigone
does not want her to die and take blame for a deed that she did not take part in. We see this throughout
the play that Ismene has strong family ties, but is not gutsy enough to take part in anything against
human law. This also exhibits that Ismene s loyalty only goes so far and is meant to teach the audience
to think before you act and stay true to your beliefs. This quote also relates to the role of women in
society, how they were meant to stay quiet and not defy men. Antigone goes against this idea because
she buries Polynices disregarding the fact that Creon placed a human law against it. Sophocles
intended to teach the audience that women were starting to become freer and wanted to make their
own decisions, as well as, that it was not uncommon to support your family even if it meant dying for
a cause that you believed in. Even if Ismene was not in agreement with the actions of Antigone, she
still wanted to help and stick up for the rights of women, by defying their uncle. Humanity has come a
long way since the early motives of women s freedom. From obtaining the right to vote in public

Unconditional Religious Freedom In The Colonies
The colonies of Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island relate to each other in the
sense that each colony had some sort of religious freedom, whether it be conditional or unconditional.
Massachusetts was religiously intolerant but allowed for Puritans, Pilgrims, and Separatists to come to
their land and practice their religion because it fits with what they believed. Maryland was a little
more tolerant than Massachusetts, the colony stated that you could have religious freedom if you
believed in the holy trinity, with the religion you practiced, so it s an example of a conditional
religious freedom. Pennsylvania and Rhode Island are the two colonies out of these four that had
unconditional religious freedom. The colonies were different from each other in the sense of whether
or not they were tolerant of different religions or not, but they compared in the sense that they had
some sort of religious freedoms.
Massachusetts was a colony founded by William Bradford and other pilgrims, who originally came to
the new world to practice their religion. The Puritans and the Separatists were among them and they
were welcomed into the colony because their religion matched up with those that founded that colony.
The Puritans believed that only true believers could reside in the colony, and if they did not, they
would be kicked out, people there could have also been kicked out if they spoke out against the core
beliefs of the colony. The core beliefs of the colony

Civil War Vs Confederacy Essay
In 1861 the United States witnessed a division within itself. As a result a war, better known as the
Civil war, broke out due to the South s declaration for their independence. In the beginning of the
Civil war, President Lincoln s main goal was to preserve the union. Although many assumed the Civil
war s primary goal was to abolish slavery, that simply wasn t the case. The Union and the Confederacy
both wanted to preserve a way of life. The difference between the Union and the confederacy, and
what ultimately started the Civil war, was that both sides wanted to preserve life differently. These
differences brought many changes throughout the war, and along those changes came many
consequences.

In the Civil war the North defeated the south, and as a result the Confederates were devastated. One of
the consequences of the civil war was the amount of life that was taken during this time. The
destruction of life and property were enormous. The south had many consequences as a result of the
civil war. The confederates suffered economically by the civil war. Because most of the fighting was
done in the south, a lot of the land was ruined. As a result the south had to rebuild. There was a lot of
physical damage done to the region. Most of the best agricultural land were destroyed. Many major
cities, like Richmond were destroyed, and farm values diminished. The Confederates believed the
Union had limited their constitutional rights to make their own political, social and economic decision.
To them the real issue was liberty not slavery. Both the North and the South had slaves, but by the end
of the war many slaves were freed and a minority of slaves in the south fled to the union. African
Americans weren t allowed to enlists in neither armies, but as the war went on the union admitted
black soldiers, but at a lower pay than the whites. ( Foner

Ophelia In Hamlet
The character Ophelia in William Shakespeare s Hamlet is seen as an important character in the play
due to her extreme violent reactions that can be seen as bizarre and peculiar. In the play Hamlet by
William Shakespeare, Ophelia can be seen as to have obviously gone mad, and she is treated
sympathetically, and her death is also treated with respect.
Ophelia s madness in the play consists of a mad language, violent reactions and distraught behaviour.
Ophelia is a subject of long time mental and emotional abuse at the hands of her father Polonius,
Claudius and Hamlet, a character who is suffering from mental illness himself. Thus her deranged
language might be considered reasonable, as through it, she reveals her unusually painful situation

Massive Anti-Islam Sentiment in the United States Essay
Islam is a monotheistic religion, centered around the teachings of the Qu ran and serving Allah
(meaning God in Arabic). However, this Abrahamic religion has been harshly discriminated against in
the United States for years. Most prominently throughout the last twelve years, post September 11th,
2001. Unfortunately, issues such as socialization through the media, power distribution, religious
ignorance, stereotyping and visible differences have contributed to the ill attitudes towards Muslims.
This paper will examine how Americans have been socialized in islamophobia within the United
States.

Muslim extremists unfortunately completely changed the way Muslims are treated, especially in the
United States. These events, exacerbated islamophobia. Unfortunately, the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001, connect Muslims and Islam to terrorism within the geographical borders of the
United States. (Byng) Although it has been over a decade since the attack, many still feel racist and

9/11 terrorist attacks shifted the social and political context for Muslims in the United States.
Terrorism within the geographical borders of the United States carried out by Muslims places an
identity at the center of national and global politics. (Byng) The blame of the horrible terrorist attacks,
rather than be placed on terrorists or religious extremist, has been placed on Islam in America. After
September 11th, hate crimes towards Muslims skyrocketed, the most dramatic change noted by the
report was a more than 1,600 percent increase in reported hate crimes against Muslims a jump from 28

Explain The Contemporary View Of Materialism
How does contemporary view of materialism impact contemporary understanding of happiness?
What is happiness? In order to be truly happy people need to be able to understand that everything is
good within their own life and that they are able to be happy with the people that are in their life and
the people that influence how they live their daily life. However, a lot of people talk about money can
buy you happiness. Money is the most important thing in everybody s life. People need money to buy
food, drinks, and transportation. However, people think that since money can buy everything else,
then it can easily buy happiness also. Although this may be true, but can money really buy happiness?
I believe not. There are a lot of reasons why money ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yes, of course they need money for the living. But to become happiness, people don t really need
money. They can do a lot of fun things to make them happy without cash. For instance, to become
friends with someone, people just need to be friendly, kind, and nice. Money is never going to be the
problem. This is why there s the difference between true friends and fake friends. True friends are the
ones that always stick with you no matter what it is. However, fake friends are the ones that always eat
up your money (Monbiot). People should be smart enough to be friends with somebody. If they re
friends with the people that always takes up their money, at first, those people are going to make you
happy and say a lot of good things about you. After that, when you don t have any money left, I
believe they re not going to stick with you anymore, though they re going to find somebody else that
has more money than you. And that is a fact. Therefore, people really got to be picky to pick their true
friends. Money doesn t get you true friends

The Theory And The Coherence Theory Essay
A central concern in the study of epistemology is what truth is. In general, it would seem intuitively
wrong to claim that something is known if that claim to knowledge was not true. However, identifying
what truth is and what it means for a proposition to be true has remained contentious and unclear.
While some philosophers argue that it is unreasonable to expect truth to be accounted for by a single
definition or necessary conditions (Sher, 2013), others state that theories of truth are able to answer
what it is for something to be true (Hack, 1978; Audi, 1988; Feldman, 2003).
The two main theories that will be analysed in this paper are the correspondence theory and the
coherence theory. Put simply, the former argues that a proposition is true if and only if it corresponds
or relates to facts, while the latter claims that for a proposition to be true it must cohere with a set of
beliefs (Walker, 1989).
While both theories are positioned as competing ideas about how it can be determined whether or not
a belief is true, the paper argues that the correspondence and coherence theories are insufficient to
explain the meaning of truth. Instead, the paper follows Strawson s performative theory and claims
that truth should be understood as an act of agreeing with or accepting a statement.
There are parameters to this paper. To keep the discussion relevant to the two main theories of truth,
the paper has excluded the pragmatic theory of truth and its claim that beliefs are

Day Camp Reflection Paper
Observation This summer I worked at Camp Cory as a Day Camp Coordinator. This experience came
with many difficulties, one of the positives was working with counselors from other countries,
including Spain, England, Brazil, Colombia, and Scotland. In my opinion, some of my best co
counselors were the international counselors. During the eight weeks I was there, I worked with four
international co counselors to facilitate a day camp group and worked closely with several others.
Working with counselors from other countries, we shared our different values and learned about each
other cultures. Even though we were from different backgrounds, we grew together, learn to work
together despite our differences and became a family together. There were a few challenges that had to
be worked through, one being a language barrier or in many cases an accent barrier. For some of the
international workers, English was not their first language, or if it was, they had an accent that was
difficult to understand. The language and accent barrier created miscommunication and funny
conversations. There are many examples that I could write about, however my favorite and the one
that impacted me the most has to be from week eight. I was working on inventorying the fused beads
or the iron beads, with one of the international works from Brazil. We were counting the peg board or
the thing that beads go on and then you iron, anyways we came to one that shaped like a dolphin and

Environmental Factors In Poisonwood Bible And Lilac Girls...
During times of conflict, literature has often included the remorseful reactions of civilians. These
themes go forward to show the human s processes to handle grief during times that stress their mental
capability. Throughout a lifetime, many things are gained; experience, wisdom, knowledge, as well as
a sure sense of self. But along with all these great things come regret, guilt, and shame of past events.
Everyone deals with these in different ways, sometimes turning to religion and denial as coping
mechanisms. Each person reacts differently to guilt in response to their environmental factors. In the
literary works, Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly, the
authors use a multifaceted point of view to espouse how environmental factors influence the
individuality with how one copes with the burden of guilt. In Poisonwood Bible, Orleanna is a prime
example of how her time in the Congo influenced her handling of guilt. Nathan Price is like a dictator
to Orleanna and his daughters forcing them to live in the Congo and fulfill his missionary work.
Orleanna describes her marriage as: By then I was lodged in the heart of darkness, so thoroughly bent
to the shape of marriage I could hardly see any other way to stand. Like Methuselah I cowered beside
my cage, and though my soul hankered after the mountain, I found, like Methuselah, I had no wings
(201). Orleanna is like a slave to Nathan, paralyzed and has no voice. Explaining that the Congo

Hamlet and Macbeth Compared as Aristotelian Tragedies Essay
Aristotle s Poetics is often considered the blueprint to a successful tragedy; his outline has been used
for hundreds of years. Aristotle defines a tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious, complete,
and of a certain magnitude... in the form of an action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting
the proper purgation of these emotions (House 82). Aristotle believed that the most important part of a
strong tragedy was the plot, and from that, the other elements such as character, diction, etc. would
emerge. Aristotle states, the principle of tragedy the soul, if you like is the plot, and second to that the
characters (Whalley 27). Shakespeare s Macbeth and Hamlet essentially mirror this definition. While
it is true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamlet tackles the tragedy within a family, but Macbeth is written as a tragedy that occurs between
friends and associates. While extremely ambitious to be king, at the opening of the play Macbeth is a
loyal servant to King Duncan of Scotland. However, upon hearing a prophecy from the three witches
that predicts his rise to the throne, an insatiable sense of ambition to succeed and wield power
overwhelms the good nature of Macbeth. Aristotle describes this part of tragedy as, the action is
human, the energy is human... the action is plotted and prepared by the maker (Whalley, 23). This is
evident when Macbeth utters to himself, Let not light see my black and deep desires making known
his intentions to murder the king (Macbeth I.iii.52 53). His action is a premeditated response and is
aggravated by his all too human emotions, ambitions and greed.
After the action element of the story, the character is the next central component in a successful
Aristotelian tragedy. According to Aristotle, the character must be true to life and natural; a character
is supposed to be a perfectly related to the audience while remaining believable enough to hold their
role in a production (House, 91). Hamlet is a wealthy and privileged prince; however, he deals with
the problems similar to most common people. He is confused, emotional, obsessive, and paranoid
about the circumstances surrounding the death of his father the king. He lacks faith

Scholasticism And Biblical Symbolism In The Chartres...
During the gothic period, many philosophers started to embrace the theory of scholasticism. Scholastic
philosophy began to take root in schools all across Europe, and this exposure shaped the arts of that
period. From music to architecture, these philosophies changed the paradigms of the artists and the
audience. Religion still being the backbone of art in this time period, cathedrals began to take on these
different art forms and processes of the gothic era. Biblical Symbolism is a key to religious art and
architecture that teaches lessons and embraces catholic ideals. Chartres Cathedral, an icon for gothic
architecture, has a style that emulates this concept of symbolism that was shaped scholasticism. In the
analysis of the west façade of the Chartres Cathedral, one can recognize how scholastic philosophy
influenced and shaped the biblical symbolism and images shown in the Chartres Cathedral.
Scholasticism is the philosophical systems and speculative tendencies of various medieval Christian
thinkers, who, working against a background of fixed religious dogma, sought to solve general
philosophical problems. These problems included: faith and reason, potentiality and actuality, realism
and nominalism, and the provability of the existence of God. Initially under the influence of the
mystical tradition of patristic philosophy, and especially Augustinianism, and later under that of
Aristotle. Virtually all medieval philosophers of any significance were theologians, and their

  • 2. Extinction Of The Amazon Rainforest The Amazon rainforest has been in existence for approximately fifty five million years. The climate that followed the extinction of the dinosaurs allowed the forest to spread all over the continent. In addition, the climate changes that have occurred in the past thirty four million years have allowed the savanna type biome to spread into the forest. The rainforest was, at first, believed to be inhospitable for human life since it s soil was considered poor. However, humans started to live in the forest about 11,200 years ago. The forest is home of many dangerous animals such as jaguars and anacondas. Not only that, but it is one of the biomes with more species diversity. Deforestation was not an issue before 1960. Access to the rainforest was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These individuals imitated their ideals of a serious relationship between two people experiencing problems between one another, and seeking help from couples therapy in order to overcome these problems. The Social Learning Theory was the theoretical framework used during this practice session along with the Current Social Work Practice Model. The Social Learning Theory, according to Theories, Models, and Perspectives (2016), suggests, Human behavior is learned as individuals interact with their environment and that Problem behavior is maintained by positive or negative reinforcement. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the fact that group members during this practice session were close friends, I was required to use competency skill one. This skill requires social workers to identify as a professional social worker and conduct oneself accordingly by demonstrating professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and communication. In other words, I needed to behave and communicate with these friends in a professional manner like I would if I were facilitating the group with actual clients. Crossing my professional boundaries was a challenge due to the fact that I was not familiar with presenting a professional demeanor around close friends. Also, during the practice session I noticed personal values was a boundary that was challenging to manage. This is because I have grown comfortable sharing personal information and opinions with my friends. Therefore, it was a challenge practicing proper personal disclosure during the practice session. It is important for a group facilitator to be able to properly disclose because group sessions are for the betterment of clients; not an opportunity for he/she to share personal stories and opinions. In other words, group session is for clients, not for the group facilitator. These were some of the challenges noticed during the practice session for facilitating a couple s therapy group ... • 4. Pros And Cons Of Human Trafficking Human trafficking has become one and the same with prostitution and sex work. However human trafficking engulfs other types such as labor trafficking which involves the obtaining, harboring, recruitment, and transportation of people for labor or services. These are the two types most thought of but there are eight classifications of human trafficking, and they include: forced labor, sex trafficking, bonded labor, debt bondage among migrants, involuntary domestic servitude, forced child soldiers, and child sex trafficking (Dalton, 2013). These types of human trafficking are modern day slavery and they are not an isolated problem, it occurs all over the world and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Over the past decade the internet has given growth and expansion to this issue of human trafficking through websites such as Backpage and Craigslist. These are just a few of the sites used in the solicitation of humans. The issue has become whether we can hold these third parties criminally liable in these cases. The Communication Decency Act attempts to regulate indecent and obscene material on the internet but Section 230 of this Act states that operators of internet service cannot be held liable for the words third parties the utilize their services. This has only been denied when the website actually had a part in the design and publication of the advertisements used in human trafficking. Organizations have banned with websites in support of this fight. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. As A Matter Of Opinion The Second Film Does A Better Job As a matter of opinion the second film does a better job of delving into the story than the original movie. While watching the first film there are a lot of things that are done by characters that leave unanswered questions. The film only tells the overlying story of the chocolate factory and lacks depth past Wonka s character. The second film digs deep into Wonka s past and explains why he became a Chocolate maker through his father who was a dentist and despised candy. The added storyline about Wonka s past creates a more in depth storyline which includes a lot of intertwined stories. The original just tells the stories as is, but the newer film adds the element of flashbacks and uses them a lot. The flashbacks help the viewer get caught ... So yes the Oompa Loompas are technically slaves and Willy Wonka is the master who gains his wealth from their work and keeps them from obtaining knowledge of the outside world by keeping them inside the locked gates of the factory. Grandpa Joe introduces the audience to the labor issues at Wonka s factory while Wonka s origin tale of the Oompa Loompas conveys the power dynamic between Wonka and the Oompa Loompas. Also the Oompa Loompas never tell their own story, only do the others tell their story. (Corbin) With the Grandpa Joe s story it can be concluded that the poor economic status in which the Bucket family is in, was caused by Wonka s firing of all of his employees. In the 1971 film the Oompa Loompas are small, orange skinned, and green haired men. This is because the film came out shortly after the Civil Rights movement. Dahl himself changed them so that they would not represent a specific group of people, but instead be cute chocolate making characters with goofy outfits and green hair. In the 2005 film the te three thousand Oompa Loompas worker are all acted out by one actor and then computer generated into the film. • 6. Lesser Animals In Animal Farm Everyone has a point in his life where they find something to be absolutely ridiculous, whether it is the opposal to gay marriage or the new hoverboard that everyone seems to have nowadays. Some people choose to keep these thoughts to themselves and some choose to demonstrate their feelings like George Orwell did with his satirical novel Animal Farm. With the largely avoidable hardships of the animals representing the Soviet Union s working class, the naivete of these animals, and how the events throughout the novel parallel the history of the Soviet Union, Orwell demonstrates through the lesser animals in Animal Farm that he agrees that it is the responsibility of the public to know what the government is doing at all times and that it is absurd to just blindly follow. Through the hardships of the animals that could have easily been avoided if the government was more carefully managed, Orwell illustrates this agreement that it is the responsibility of the public to know what the government is doing at all times. Orwell demonstrates that because no one knew what Napoleon was doing with Bluebell s puppies, this event was largely unavoidable, which compliments the idea that the public has the responsibility of knowing what the government is doing at all times in all instances. I knew there were challenges for me to overcome, because I have not written much at all since high school, which has been more than twenty four years ago. Nonetheless, I was up for the challenge and each week I made sure to do exactly as instructed in the weekly syllabus, reading each every assignment very carefully. At first I felt overwhelmed, but as I completed the homework and discussion post assignments for the weeks prior to the major papers, the overwhelming feelings subsided and I concentrated on each task at hand. The homework and class work did not come easy for me, but completing the reading assignments really helped me to understand what I needed to accomplish. I made sure to be engaged in the discussion board posts, so that I would be able to obtain feedback from others. Keeping up with the writing assignments was a major priority for me as well, because I was hopeful to find out which areas I would really need to focus on to be able to do a good job on major papers. • 8. Thomas Jefferson s Accomplishments Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 on his father s plantation in Shadwell, Virginia. He spent his first years on the plantation helping his father with small tasks, but at age nine he began his formal education which would be the foundation for hi s many great accomplishments. From the beginning of his education to age sixteen, Jefferson spent nine months out of the year with a minister teacher. And just 16 years before the U.S. declared independence from England, he took classes at the College of William and Mary. There he studied rhetoric, science, philosophy, mathematics, and literature. Jefferson s reasoning to ensure this was a good choice was that it has/will lead to great exploration farther west. He continued that it has also led to friendly intercourse with the Native Americans. Nevertheless, Jefferson stayed true to the status quo of racist ideologies of that time by mentioning that whites were still superior to the Native Americans. He then went on to say that although inferior, they would still be protected. One of the main principles that Jefferson serves under is the importance of freedom of religion and he does not fail to acknowledge that in his address. Through the course of his political career, Jefferson has always believed that religious freedom was very important. • 9. Japan s War Crimes During The World War II Introduction: Nowadays, Japanese animes are becoming increasingly famous, and America is not an exception for anime s gigantic worldwide fandom. Animes, such as One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and Attack on Titan, are the main leaders of the anime wave sweeping all over the world. Nevertheless, many Japanese animes are often criticized at the same time for employing the idea of neo nationalism or indirectly mentioning justifications for Japan s war crimes during the World War II. Although they are not really noticeable to most of the audience, the author of a famous anime, Attack on Titan, Hajime Isayama demonstrated that such neo nationalist factors actually exist in animes when he showed a strong support towards Japan s past aggressive wars and colonialism in his SNS. However, not all animes are showing support towards neo nationalism in Japan. An anime, Terror in Resonance, directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, not only criticizes Japan s war crimes during the World War II, but also condemns current Japanese government s policies encouraging neo nationalism. The anime well demonstrates that the neo nationalist movement in Japan is not Japan s own problem, but it is rather a serious international problem that will affect Japan s relationship with other countries. Furthermore, the anime focuses on increasing people s awareness on unjustifiable neo nationalist movement of Japanese government. Youth Marketing After a moving target by Jo Bowman 5 Nov 04, 08:49 Asia s youth may be a moving target but targeted traditional media, from print to radio, can still work Parents used to bemoan the fact that their kids were constantly glued to the set; now they despair that young people don t seem to focus on anything for more than a few minutes. Sure, they re still watching TV, but no longer are they couch potatoes, absorbing everything that flashes across the screen; they re flicking channels, flicking through a magazine, texting their friends or moving to a PC a growing culture of impatience that began with the remote control and is now seen to an extreme degree in the region s young. In India, the TV line up for younger children has grown this year, with the launch of Cartoon Network s sister channel Pogo, with programming ranging from Barney Friends for pre schoolers, up to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone and the animated Mr Bean series for older children. While in Thailand, Virgin Radio Asia has just launched two new radio stations aimed at young listeners. Stations in the northern university city, Chiang Mai, and on the holiday island of Ko Samui, are in addition to the four stations Virgin has launched in Bangkok since entering the Thai market two years ago. Content for Chiang Mai will be based on the Bangkok station Virgin Hitz, with a focus on top 40 popular music, and on Ko Samui will broadcast easy listening music to help listeners kick back in tropical paradise , Virgin says. Radio technology predates TV, and is well behind the days of MMS and video streaming, but its affordability and portability makes it a good choice if not necessarily a favourite for youth marketers. Radio is huge for this market, says Ian Stewart, CEO of youth brand specialist marketers The Filter Group. • 11. An Examination of Festinger s Cognitive Dissonance Theory... An Examination of Festinger s Cognitive Dissonance Theory and Notable Modifications Sometimes the greatest test of a theory is its longevity. Over time, some theories will be disproved, some will be modified, and some will become the basis for a whole new group of theories. Leon Festinger s theory of cognitive dissonance has stood up to challenge for over forty years, and is considered by many to be the single most important theory of social psychology. Though there have been modifications to the theory after many recreations and simulations of the original 1957 experiment, few have been able to really disqualify Festinger s findings. It would be safe to say that many people don t even have a full grasp of the incredible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In conclusion, Festinger found that the subjects who were paid one dollar actually came to believe that the experiment was enjoyable, as opposed to those who were paid twenty dollars. Incredible? Simple. The subjects who were paid twenty dollars have all the justification in the world for their actions, but the subjects who were only paid one dollar have reacted to the dissonance created by telling the lie for such a small price, and have actually led themselves to believe that the task was enjoyable to improve their self esteem in regards to the lie. Festinger concluded that over time dissonance would change attitudes. For example, cigarette smokers know that it is unhealthy to smoke, but they created an attitude to justify why they continue to smoke. If I quit smoking now, I will gain weight. I only smoke when I am drinking. I only smoke after a meal. But the dissonance theory is applicable to much bigger social opinions than smoking, for example: Aronson and Mills (1959) conducted an experiment in which some subjects were put through a harsh period of hazing during initiation into a group while other subjects had to endure only mild hazing. The end result was that the people who went through the sever initiation ended up liking that group a lot better than those who went through mild hazing. • 12. System Of Education Vs American Education Lifestyles differ throughout generations. It is because of several factors related to people s behaviors, historical events, social environment, and scientific and technical progress. My upbringing and schooling experience has some new features different from what had my grandparents in their youth. Therefore, the American System of Education today and before still focuses on the religious education and socialization of students through multiple activities. First, my life is similar to the elder s life in terms of the religious influence throughout the years of education. Municipal authorities built public schools with the extension to the church, and students went to the church every day. My grandparents prayed every day before the start of the classes. It is the same experience as I had at school. Moreover, I entered the Catholic University of America. Therefore, one has to understand the American education in combination with practical advantages and disadvantages. Teen activist and 2014 Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai said, I raise up my voice not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard . For whom have you raised your voice? One of the most compelling books I read in my life was called Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is a story about a young high school girl who was raped by the quarterback of her high school s football team one night at a party. This immediate damage of this traumatic event was her ability to speak out about what happened to her that dark night. As an eighth grader, I was very frustrated at the fact that this young girl had so many opportunities to bring justice to her rape, but never did all because she was still suffering from her experience. While I am not comparing rape to homosexuality, I am stating I understand the angst and self hate that the main character of Anderson s book felt. Growing up, I was told being gay was a one way ticket to Hell and how since God hates faggots, so should I. Feelings like these arose years before I came to understand I was gay, but never would I had thought that certain people, who I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Case Of The Speluncean Explorers This essay discusses the theoretical position of the five judges in Fuller s The Case of the Speluncean Explorers and compare the best embodiment thereof to the decision in R v Dudley and Stephens, upon which Fuller s article is largely based. Whilst direct references to writings of the relevant theorists will be made, no critique of either the judges decisions or the theoretical positions thereof will be offered, nor will lengthy definitions of theoretical positions be provided. Background: Fuller s mythical case was constructed on stipulated facts with one single applicable statue devoid of legislative history, whoever shall wilfully take the life of another shall be punished by death thus leaving no room for argument over facts or legislative materials. Five speluncean explorers were trapped in a cave for thirty two days without food, water or expectation of imminent rescue. The explorers unanimously decided to kill one man to provide nourishment to the survivors, with the fate of the condemned to be decided by rolling a dice. After the dice were rolled but before execution, the condemned man changed his mind and withdrew from the communal decision. The surviving four men executed the plan, only to be rescued shortly thereafter and tried for murder with Truepenny CJ, Foster, Tatting, Keen and Handy JJ presiding. One of the examples of figurative language used by the narrator was when he was looking out of his window the morning following the falling of the third star and the storm. Looking outside, he could see that many houses near Maybury Hill had been burned the night before. To better explain the spectacle, the narrator called those houses glowing ruins. (143). • 16. Argumentative Speech On The National Anthem Malcolm Jenkins, safety for the Philadelphia Eagles, supported Kaepernick s message but said, My grandfather served [in the military]. And this is a country that I love. So, me not standing for the national anthem isn t really going to get me the results that I want. Therefore, Athletes who refuse to stand for the national anthem should receive a consequence. For instance, they should get fined or possibly suspended for a few games. Refusing to stand for the National Anthem shows disrespect to the flag members of armed forces. For example, The national anthem pays respect to the people who have risked their lives, been injured, or died defending the US. Without a doubt, this is 100% true because why should someone be able to take a knee and disrespect the flag when people risked their lives for us to be free. Yes, that s what the flag represents but people should never bite the hand that feeds you.The writer of the national anthem sated, it just blows my mind that somebody like (kaepernick) would do what he does to dishonor the flag of this country and the national anthem when we have young men and women overseas fighting for this country, that people have died for. I agree with the evidence stated because I feel like everyone should pay their respects to everyone who fought for the flag. I understand that you aren t supportive of the National anthem but I feel as if there s another way you can protest. That s not as disrespectful for instance, taking a knee before or after the national anthem. Lastly, the New Orleans quarterback, supported Kaepernick s message but disagreed with the delivery: It s and oxymoron that you re sitting down, disrespecting that flag that has given you the freedom to speak out. As this being stated I agree with the New Orleans Quarterback because, again there is another way to protest and at least be smart about what you re doing. Not standing for the national anthem is an ineffective and counterproductive way to promote a cause. The insight on women and their specific role amongst the church is what collides. When watching the PBS film, it states that even though women are very frequent in the church, their role is very small and not as important as the men. They don t have a specific role nor importance to the church. John Paul feels this is the correct way to run the system of the church. He believes this due to the fact that men can become priests and have the highest role in the church. On the other hand, Pope Francis had a big issue with this topic that he made comments about possibly changing the system in the future. According to the article by Spadero, he explains Pope Francis view of women in the life of the Church by stating, The church cannot be herself without the woman and her role. The woman is essential for the church. Mary, a woman, is more important than the bishops. I say this because we must not confuse the function with the dignity. We must therefore investigate further the role of women in the church. We have to work harder to develop a profound theology of the woman. Ideas about criminal justice and crime arose in the 18th century during the enlightenment, but criminology as we know it today developed in the late 19th century. Criminology has been shaped by many different academic disciplines and has many different approaches. It explores the implications of criminal laws; how they emerge and work, then how they are violated and what happens to those violators. Laws are relative and historically shaped; they vary from time to time and from place to place (Carrabine et al, 2009). It is better to try and prevent crimes than it is to punish them, this is achieved by good legislation which guides men to their greatest, or least unhappiness possible (Beccaria, 1767). As mentioned previously, Beccaria s utilitarian ideology has shaped the justice system in western societies for many decades. Therefore, Beccaria can be described as a very influential thinker. Without his contribution we could still have a system of capital punishment, and that is a worrying thought. However, we now seem fixed with utilitarian justice. It may be argued that it is now time to move towards restorative justice. There are also those such as Tullock (1974), who argue for a return to harsher sentencing. Some states in the US still consider the death penalty to be a legitimate punishment. So it can be said that Beccaria is undoubtedly a key thinker in criminology, but as with all key thinkers he is not without his critics. Cesare Lombroso was also Italian but came from a Jewish family and is very different to Beccaria. He trained as a medical doctor and graduated in 1858. He was a leading contributor in the development of a positivist criminology which collected and looked into scientific measurements for the explanation of criminal behaviour and crime (Hayward et al, 2010). The Greeks believed in proper burial rights that were performed in three parts, and the relatives mostly women are the ones that conduct these rituals for the deceased. Much like the modern world these rituals consist of the first step; laying out the body to be dressed, the second funeral procession, and the third step was the cremation of the body. (Gibran, Khalil) Khalil Gibran, a famous Lebanese American artist, poet, and writer once spoke a quote which relates to two Greek tragedies, Oedipus the King and Antigone. The quote analyzes the tragic characters in each play because they must endure pain before, during, and after their downfalls in order to grow. In Oedipus the King, written in 430 B.C, Oedipus has been named the king of Thebes, which is suffering from a plague. Ismene confesses, I did it yes / if only she consents I share the guilt, / the consequences too. (Sophocles, 604 606) This is a misunderstanding because we see Ismene confessing, and Antigone does not want her to die and take blame for a deed that she did not take part in. We see this throughout the play that Ismene has strong family ties, but is not gutsy enough to take part in anything against human law. This also exhibits that Ismene s loyalty only goes so far and is meant to teach the audience to think before you act and stay true to your beliefs. This quote also relates to the role of women in society, how they were meant to stay quiet and not defy men. Antigone goes against this idea because she buries Polynices disregarding the fact that Creon placed a human law against it. Sophocles intended to teach the audience that women were starting to become freer and wanted to make their own decisions, as well as, that it was not uncommon to support your family even if it meant dying for a cause that you believed in. • 31. The Theory And The Coherence Theory Essay A central concern in the study of epistemology is what truth is. In general, it would seem intuitively wrong to claim that something is known if that claim to knowledge was not true. However, identifying what truth is and what it means for a proposition to be true has remained contentious and unclear. While some philosophers argue that it is unreasonable to expect truth to be accounted for by a single definition or necessary conditions (Sher, 2013), others state that theories of truth are able to answer what it is for something to be true (Hack, 1978; Audi, 1988; Feldman, 2003). The two main theories that will be analysed in this paper are the correspondence theory and the coherence theory. Put simply, the former argues that a proposition is true if and only if it corresponds or relates to facts, while the latter claims that for a proposition to be true it must cohere with a set of beliefs (Walker, 1989). While both theories are positioned as competing ideas about how it can be determined whether or not a belief is true, the paper argues that the correspondence and coherence theories are insufficient to explain the meaning of truth. Instead, the paper follows Strawson s performative theory and claims that truth should be understood as an act of agreeing with or accepting a statement. There are parameters to this paper. To keep the discussion relevant to the two main theories of truth, the paper has excluded the pragmatic theory of truth and its claim that beliefs are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These themes go forward to show the human s processes to handle grief during times that stress their mental capability. Throughout a lifetime, many things are gained; experience, wisdom, knowledge, as well as a sure sense of self. But along with all these great things come regret, guilt, and shame of past events. Everyone deals with these in different ways, sometimes turning to religion and denial as coping mechanisms. Each person reacts differently to guilt in response to their environmental factors. In the literary works, Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly, the authors use a multifaceted point of view to espouse how environmental factors influence the individuality with how one copes with the burden of guilt. In Poisonwood Bible, Orleanna is a prime example of how her time in the Congo influenced her handling of guilt. • 37. Hamlet and Macbeth Compared as Aristotelian Tragedies Essay Aristotle s Poetics is often considered the blueprint to a successful tragedy; his outline has been used for hundreds of years. Aristotle defines a tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude... in the form of an action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions (House 82). Aristotle believed that the most important part of a strong tragedy was the plot, and from that, the other elements such as character, diction, etc. would emerge. Aristotle states, the principle of tragedy the soul, if you like is the plot, and second to that the characters (Whalley 27). Shakespeare s Macbeth and Hamlet essentially mirror this definition. While it is true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet tackles the tragedy within a family, but Macbeth is written as a tragedy that occurs between friends and associates. While extremely ambitious to be king, at the opening of the play Macbeth is a loyal servant to King Duncan of Scotland. However, upon hearing a prophecy from the three witches that predicts his rise to the throne, an insatiable sense of ambition to succeed and wield power overwhelms the good nature of Macbeth. Aristotle describes this part of tragedy as, the action is human, the energy is human... the action is plotted and prepared by the maker (Whalley, 23). This is evident when Macbeth utters to himself, Let not light see my black and deep desires making known his intentions to murder the king (Macbeth I.iii.52 53). His action is a premeditated response and is aggravated by his all too human emotions, ambitions and greed. After the action element of the story, the character is the next central component in a successful Aristotelian tragedy. According to Aristotle, the character must be true to life and natural; a character is supposed to be a perfectly related to the audience while remaining believable enough to hold their role in a production (House, 91). From music to architecture, these philosophies changed the paradigms of the artists and the audience. Religion still being the backbone of art in this time period, cathedrals began to take on these different art forms and processes of the gothic era. Biblical Symbolism is a key to religious art and architecture that teaches lessons and embraces catholic ideals. Chartres Cathedral, an icon for gothic architecture, has a style that emulates this concept of symbolism that was shaped scholasticism. In the analysis of the west façade of the Chartres Cathedral, one can recognize how scholastic philosophy influenced and shaped the biblical symbolism and images shown in the Chartres Cathedral.
