3. Course Description and Objectives
Course Description
Today, information systems are an integral part of all
business activities and careers. This course is designed
to introduce students to contemporary information
systems and demonstrate how these systems are used
throughout organizations. We will focus on the key
components of information systems - people,
software, hardware, data, and telecommunications,
and how these components can be integrated and
managed to create competitive advantage. In addition
to surveying the exciting topic of information systems,
students will gain hands-on experience with business
software tools commonly applied to business data
analysis and database management as well as
business process execution. As a result, students will
obtain valuable information technology knowledge
and skills for being successful in all areas of business.
Objectives
▪ Students can differentiate between the various
types of e-commerce as well as summarize how e-
commerce has changed consumer retailing and
business-to-business transactions.
▪ Students will understand the important role of
enterprise applications in supporting key business
processes.
▪ Students can explain ethical and security issues
relating to the use of information technology.
▪ Students can identify the principal concepts and
terms associated with database design and data
management.
▪ Students will be competent in using technology for
purposes of business reporting.

7. Course Schedule
▪ Important Aspects of Course Schedule:
– Quizzes are due the day before we discuss a topic to get you to read course
texts
– Simulations, Access and Excel Labs to be completed on your own outside of
class too
– As a result, some classes will end earlier than others
– Exam dates are tentatively scheduled for 2/18, 4/7, and 5/5
– The final exam date is tentatively 5/5/20, but the course time may be subject
to change based on Rowan University’s exam schedule
– There is no class meeting on 3/17 due to Spring Break
– Instructor may provide students opportunity to complete simulations in class
if time permits
– Schedule is subject to change and any modifications will be posted to
Blackboard

Systems Without Really Trying
▪ COME TO CLASS prepared having read course material ahead of time.
▪ Complete all assignments ON TIME; no late assignments will be
accepted.
▪ When I say “All Right Young Scholars” that means class is starting

▪ Use study guides to prep and complete your studies pertaining to
exams
▪ Email me, ask questions in class, or arrange meetings during office
hours with any issues in course content you’re having
