Mel Collier from K.U. Leuven gave a presentation on sustainability models for digital libraries and archives. He discussed challenges around selecting and funding born-digital content as well as digitization projects. Examples from Pandora in Australia and Ithaka studies showed different approaches like government funding, collaboration, and exploring commercial options. Business models need to define services, markets, costs and income streams. Europeana aims to provide single search access to over 25 million items across Europe through various content partners and a mix of sponsorship and modest market income. Overall, fully commercial models are challenging for cultural content which relies significantly on public subsidies.
