ISLANDS
Caribbean (7020 & 7030) is part of Zone 34
Extremely diverse (Locals and expats)
Melting pot of cultural differences and
understanding
Technology about 10 years behind the states
Poor countries with underserviced needs
Heavy social media use (anything “free”)
Reliant on Newspapers
Word of mouth (relatively small community)
High visibility projects go a long way
About William – not much to tell, perhaps my journey into Rotary? Would likely be relevant actually.
Wear your pins! Easiest thing to do – talk about examples – (William airport story - microfinance)
Use social media
Don't let Rotary be the best kept secret! TELL PEOPLE about your experience!
I met my husband through Rotary and I found my passion of foster care and helping children through Rotary.
Who are you and who are you trying to attract?
Strategies to correct a lack of age diversity and engage young professionals to be discussed
TECHNOLOGY is your friend for attracting younger Rotarians. Don't be afraid of it
More women over 55 than men, where are they and why are they not in our clubs? The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. “My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.
How do you attract female members? How do you get them involved? How do you retain them?
Meet up – thought it was a millennial thing, but it's not just for them
Networking events
Businesses (director to VP level)
High level speakers
Events tend to be larger
Need to be more deliberate in marketing. Specifically pick out people or groups vs general networking. Target marketing
Diversity is an issue
Newspaper – events, speakers, ex: top 20 under 40, Best of Rome
Radio (am) - (ex: United Way 20 minutes every week) Talk of the town
Personal invitation to events and meetings – It's not just a post on social media. It's "Hey So-in-so, Did you know that Rotary has a speaker this coming Thursday on foster care and adoption? I know you your family has considered that in the past and I thought you'd like to join me for lunch and learn more about it. I'd be honored if you were my guest this week?"
It's about THE one thing to do this weekend vs here's an option among many.
More planning and collaboration has to go into events with other organizations and even the city. The city calendar actually puts our events on their public calendar. The board meetings are planned around the city meetings. I will never forget the day downtown Rome decided to charge people for parking. I knew about it within 5 minutes of the city meeting being adjurned. My club made a post on SM to inform the members!
Local news is more prevalent. A run away pig was famous for months in Rome! He got more likes and comments and then when the mayor was elected. Side note – I almost adopted that pig from the local animal control.

FUN
I mean this in the most polite non rude way possible, but.....Have you ever Googled Rotary meetings and looked at the images? Even if you type the word FUN after it you get the same result. That's a PI problem that needs to be addressed. Took me about 10 minutes of scrolling to find these two images.
NOW I KNOW ROTARIANS KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN!! Why aren't we sharing that with the communities we live in?
POA
Showcase what we do besides eat lunch (or breakfast) and write checks
I mean HELLO we do some amazing things all around the world. Whatever market you are in, there's something for people in your community to get behind. It's as simple as informing them of the opportunity to get involved.
PARTY WITH A PURPOSE
Fundraisers
Peace Fellowships
Membership Socials
Again, showcase the fun. I mean who doesn't want to be friends with these people??? I know I do, they look like fun. :)
Initial market is internal market
Age, gender
One of my greatest Rotary moments was being given an opportunity to serve my Zone by RI Director David Stovall. It's also been one of the biggest lessons within my Rotary journey. Sometimes your "market" is not just outside of Rotary, but it’s the Rotarians you serve. It's your club, district and Zone. I'm fully aware that you can't please everyone, but I didn't expect backlash for receiving a Zone position. So I ask the question, Are there politics within Rotary?
QUICK POLL – Raise your hand if you believe there are politics in Rotary? I'm not talking about "office running" (that doesn't belong) What I am talking about is unspoken rules and regulations placed upon members and leaders.
This is a touchy subject so I'll make sure to be careful of what I say....But that's the point I'm making
Prime examples: Each one of these pictures is an example of something I did wrong in Rotary, but I'd like to use it as a tool to showcase what it could have meant?
1- Don't use your phones. It shows disrespect for your club president.... or maybe it shows that you want your friends to know where you are and what you are doing?
2- Don't post silly pictures because it's unprofessional...or maybe is shows that I know how to have fun and I'm human just like everyone else
3- Did you just bring a baby to a Rotary meeting? YEP sure did. Ethan is a foster child that I brought home from the NICU. One day to prepare for him and 2 days later a Rotary event I had already committed to. Why not showcase what Rotarians do within our community with a real life story?
4- There's a level of fear as a young Rotarian that I face all the time in my marketing within Rotary. Will my ideas be received well? Will I be respected even though I'm young and a woman? Will I be welcomed as I meet new people? That fear is there because in the past it hasn't always been a resounding YES.
How can we address this issue? How can we market to Rotarians in addition to community members?
It's not me! I am the Rotary of today, the future of Rotary is just now seeing a small glimpse. It's the RYE and GRSP students, the orphans of Malawi, it's my children (your grandchildren), it's the children of the families that receive packaged meals and it's the babies that get a new set of toys when all of theirs are destroyed by a devastating hurricane. The future of Rotary is in our hands now. We need to provide our communities and world with the knowledge of what we ACTUALLY do besides eat fried chicken and peach cobbler on Thursdays. Which is one of the many perks of being a Rotarian?
How can you find the future Rotarians within your community not matter what type of market you live in?
