How Alzheimer s Changed My Family
Alzheimer s is a disease that affects roughly 3 million families each year, including
my own. Around this time three years ago my parents got a call that changed our
entire lives. At 3 A.M. they received a phone call from a police department, in a
surrounding town, that they had pulled over my step grandpa, who was driving
down the highway on the wrong side of the road. This was the first of many calls
that my parents received in regard to my grandfather. There were instances of him
showing up to work, although he was 20 years in retirement. He would go out to
eat and not realize that he had been at the restaurant 10 minutes prior to eat.
Quickly, my parents realized that something was off and medical assistance was
needed. After some series of testing, it was very clear to the doctor that Alzheimer
s was the answer to his lack of memory and at the age of 86, he was officially

using conflict free minerals, and we ve joined the Public Private Alliance for
Responsible Minerals Trade, a joint initiative among governments, companies, and
civil society to support supply chain solutions to conflict minerals challenges in the
Democratic Republic of Congo. As one of the first electronics companies to map its
supply chain for conflict minerals, we actively survey suppliers to confirm their
smelter sources. As of December 2012, we have identified 211 smelters and refiners
from which our suppliers source tin, tantalum, tungsten, or gold.
Apple suppliers are using conflict free sources of tantalum, are certifying their
tantalum smelters, or are transitioning their sourcing to already certified tantalum
smelters. We will continue to work to certify qualified smelters, and we ll require our
suppliers to move their sourcing of tin, tungsten, and gold to certify conflict free
sources as smelters become certified.

AA Meeting
When Ms. Reed let us know about this paper and what was going to be about at the
beginning of the semester, I started to feel a little anxious to be completely honest.
At that time, my idea of an AA meeting was a very dark place, with a lot of sad
emotions. I feel like us, young people, love to glamorize alcohol. We like going to
parties and saying how drunk we got, but as soon as we hear the word alcoholic we
creep out. Even though a part of me was frightened about going to an AA meeting,
another part of me really wanted to do it. My goal in life is to become a clinical
psychology and this consists of a lot of empathy and understanding of how it feels
to be in someone else s shoes so I felt like I could truly learn from this. I first
wanted to go with my group of friends, just to have someone there with me, but after
I thought that if I really wanted to experience this fully, I had to do it by myself.
It was a cold Friday of October when I decided to go. After checking the time and
locations on the AA of Rhode Island website, I chose the one that suited me the
most. I headed to my first option, and unfortunately, it was closed. I was really

every drug: alcohol, cocaine, and even gamble. He explained how he started to
like cocaine so much, that he got to the point where he did not like going out with
