Soldiers would first dig ditches on either side of where a road was to be built to act as drains to prevent flooding. They would then place the dug up dirt in the middle and flatten it. Lastly, they collected stones of different shapes and sizes and laid them from smallest to biggest, which would eventually be covered up. Roman roads were built in 312 BC and were used for transporting messages between generals, as marketplaces, and to control British prisoners. They were constructed using materials like water, sand, and shattered pottery.
