Role of Diet in Our Spiritual 
Unfoldment 
The secret of being healthy and happy at all times is to be a little hungry at all times. Do not 
overload stomach, never ever. Over-eating is the chief cause of most diseases. The vast 
majority of persons dig their graves through their teeth.This tip is an insurance for being 
happy, healthy and harmonious for ever…Swami Sivananda 
An alcohol addict pollutes his physical, astral and mental cells apart from polluting the etheric 
environment around him. Our body is a divine artwork of God. Hence, we should take very 
best care of our body. Feeding physical body also feeds the inner subtle bodies. Our daily 
food habits have a revealing effect on our destiny, apart from general health and well-being.
Swami Sivananda (from his book ‘Bliss Divine’) on Right Diet and 
Moderate Eating - 1 
(He was a qualified medical doctor of great reputation before renouncing the material world) 
▪ ‘Though we all boast ourselves as civilized men, yet, when the question of food comes, we 
falter and make blunders invariably. An average person eats twice as much as his system 
needs. It hinder assimilation, elimination and growth. All the organs get over-worked and 
get diseased quickly. Hence, avoid over-eating at all times; in fact, eat multiple times a day, 
but each time, in moderation’. 
▪ ‘Next comes, the right kind of food intake. Remember, good food, healthy food is not 
expensive. A well-balanced diet is not costly. It is the knowledge of dietetics that we 
hopelessly lack’. 
▪ Meat Diet Generates Diseases: Meat generates diseases, excites passions, and produces 
restlessness of mind. A very large number of medical men who have studied the subject of 
diet in relation to health are forbidding their patients to eat animal flesh, not only as a 
means of cure for such diseases as gout, rheumatism, etc., but also as a preventive against 
uric- acid ailments and diseases of many kinds, including cancer, and appendicitis.

▪ Flesh-eating involves the exercise of cruelty which is not an elevating virtue. It is a bestial 
quality which degrades man. Cruelty is condemned by all great men. Pythagoras (a great 
Mathematician, BrahmGyani and Spiritual Master) condemned meat diet as a sinful food. 
▪ Man is created a frugivorous or fruit-eating creature. What is needed is a well-balanced diet, 
not a rich diet. A rich diet produces diseases of the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. A well-balanced 
diet helps a man to grow, to turn out more work, increases his body-weight, and 
keeps up efficiency, stamina, and a high standard of vim and vigor. 
▪ People who are slaves to the flesh-eating habit cannot give up animal diet. They try to justify 
their habit by various arguments and statistics. One cannot change their ways merely by 
argumentation and disputation. It is best to shun their company and association beyond 
business matters.
छान्दोग्य उपनिषद (6/5/4) में 
अन्ि का असर मि पर पड़िा बताया है– “जैसा अन्ि वैसा मि” 
1. अन्न के सूक्ष्म सार-भाग से मन अर्ाात अन्तःकरण बनता है, 
2. दूसरे िम्बर के भाग से वीययबिता है, 
3. तीसरे िम्बर के (स्थूल) भाग से रक्त आदद 
4. चौथे िम्बर के स्थूल भाग से मल बिता है। 
अतः मि को शुद्ध बिािेके ललये भोजि शुद्ध+पववत्र होिा चादहये। 
5. भोजि बिािे वाले के भाव भी शुद्ध होिे चादहये। 
6. भोजि करिे का स्थाि, वायुमण्डल, दृष्य, टेबल आदद सब साफ़, रौचक और पववत्र होिे 
चादहये। भोजि करतेसमय हमारा प्राणिक शरीर स्थूल शरीर के सभी रोमकूपो के द्वारा आसपास 
के परमािुओंको भी खींचता है, ग्रहि करता है। 
7. भोजि करिेसे पहले हाथ, पैर और मुँहुअवश्य धोिे चादहये। 
इतिेसब तरीको सेभोजि हमारेमि को शुद्ध करता है।
सात्ववक भोजि (गीता17/8) और राजलसक भोजि (गीता17/9) 
▪ ‘सात्विक भोजन’ – त्जि-त्जि आहार को करिेसे आयु बढ़ती हो; जो गररष्ठ िहींपर सुपाच्य है 
और त्जिका सार बहुत ददिो तक शरीर में शत्क्त देता रहता है;और जो हृदय, फ़ेफ़ड़े आदद में सौम्य- 
भाव लािेवाले हो; रस-युनत हो (फ़ल, दूध, खाुँड, घी, मक्खि, बादाम, काजू, ककशलमश, सात्ववक 
बीजो/पदाथो सेनिकलेहुयेतैल आदद; स्िेहयुक्त भोजि के पदाथय, जो अच्छे पके हु और ताजे हो) 
– ऐसे सब सात्ववक भोजि कहे जाते है, बशतेउन्हें प्रसाद समझकर खाया जाये, त्जतनी भूख होिे 
उतना ही खाया जािे, अन्यर्ा िही सात्विक आहार राजससक आहार हो जाता है। 
▪ ‘राजसी भोजन’ – करेला, ग्वारपाठा जैसेकड़ुवेपदाथयवांनछत मात्रा सेअधधक; इमली, िींबू,छाछ आदद 
अवयधधक खटाई युक्त पदाथयअधधक मात्रा में; अधधक िमकवाले पदाथय; अवयन्त गमयपदाथय;अवयन्त 
तीखे पदाथय (लाल-लमचयआदद) – ये सब राजसी आहार कहलातेहै, बशतेउन्हेंप्रसाद समझकर 
खाया जाये, अन्यर्ा िेतामससक हो जाते है। 
▪ भोजि सदा ही ‘स्िल्पमात्रा’ में ही खािा चादहये, भोजि करिेके बाद पेट याद ि आये; क्योंकक 
पेट दो कारिो से ही याद आता है – बहुत अधधक खािेपर और बहुत कम खािे पर। रागी होिे 
से रजोगुिी पुरुष सबसे पहले भोजि पर दृत्ष्ट डालता है – यह राजस-वृवि का धोतक है।
गीता 17/10 – ‘तामसी भोजन’ 
1. बबि मौसम के फ़ल, आधे पके हु आहार, सार-रदहत आहार; 
2. सड़ि से पैदा करी हुई मददरा; 
3. रज-वीययके संयोग से उवपन्ि मांस,मछली,अुँडा आदद जो मुदाय पदाथय है, वे महाि अपववत्र है; 
4. बासी + दुगयन्ध-वाले पदाथय; 
5. जूंठा छोड़ा हुआ भोजि; 
6. प्राणियों की दृत्ष्ट का भी आहार पर प्रभाव पड़ता है, बुरे व्यवि की या भूखे कुिेकी िजर यदद 
भोजि पर पड़ती है तो वह अशुद्ध हो जाता है। 
7. अन्ि और जल मेंवािी का प्रभाव पड़ता है, इसीललयेज्ञािीजि ककसी के हाथ का पािी भी िहींपीते, खािे 
की तो बात ही जािेदो। 
8. झूठ, कपट, चौरी, डकैती, धोखे-बाजी आदद पापी उपायों से पैसे कमा ुँ जायुँतो वह भोजि 
तामसी ही होता है। यदद शुद्ध बुद्धध वाला उस भोजि को क बार भी करे, तो उसकी बुद्धध कुबुद्धध 
हो जाती है। इसललयेबुद्धधमाि वेहोतेहै, जो काल का ग्रास बिेबबिा भगवाि की शरि हो जातेहै 
(7/24)। ऐसेलोग ककसी का ददया अन्ि कभी ग्रहि िहींकरते। इतिा सहजिा पड़ता है, भगवद-शरि में 
जािेके ललये।
मददरापाि करिेवालेमहापापी है– छान्दोग्य 5/10/9 
▪ मददरापाि करिेवालो को शास्त्रो मेंमहापापी कहा गया है। मददरा-पाि मांस-भक्षि सेभी अधधक 
निन्दिीय और पति करिेवाला कृवय है। मददरा के निमायि में असंख्य जीवो की हवया होती है। 
मददरापान से सबसे भयंकर हानन यह हैकक इससे अन्तःकरण में रहनेिाले धमाके अँकुर नष्ट हो 
जाते है; अर्ाात मनुष्य के अन्दर जो धासमाक भािनाएँ, धासमाक विचार और धमा के संस्कार रहते 
है, उनको मददरापान नष्ट कर देता है और मिुष्य महाि पति की तरफ़ चला जाता है। 
▪ डाक्टरो सेपूछिेपर कोई जवाब िहींलमल सकता लेककि क ज्ञाियोगी यह बतायगा कक मािव शरीर का 
प्रवयेक अंग स्थूलता के अनतररक्त सूक्ष्म और आध्यात्वमक उपलत्धधयों मेंभी कारिभूत होता है। जैसे 
Tonsils को निकलवा देिेवाला मौि रहिेकी शत्क्त खो देता है। जो Appendix को surgery द्वारा 
निकलवा देतेहै, वेसूक्ष्म शरीर की लम्बी उड़ाि िहींभर पाते, उिको अतीत्न्िय दृत्ष्ट, सूक्ष्म दृत्ष्ट 
(Clairvoyance) कभी ि प्राप्त हो सकेगी, जो क ददव्य लसद्धध होती है। 
▪ कृबत्रम उपायों सेसन्तनत-निरोध कराकर भोगबुद्धध सेकाम मेंप्रवृत होिा यािेमहाि िरको का द्वार- 
प्रवेश करिा है। सजयरी द्वारा सन्तनत-निरोध करािेवालेस्त्री-पुरुष देव-काययऔर वपतृ-काययकरिेका 
अधधकार खो देतेहै(7/11)।
भोजि द्वारा निष्ठा की पहचाि (गीता 17/7) 
भोजन द्िारा ननष्ठा की पहचान – जो लोग यजि-पूजि िहीं करते हों, शास्त्र का ज्ञाि भी ि रखते हों, चाहे 
वे ईसाई हो, यहुदी हो, नात्स्तक हो या आत्स्तक हो, उिकी निष्ठा की पहचाि उिके आहार के द्िारा करी 
जा सकती है। 
मिुष्य का मन स्िाभाविक ही त्जस भोजि में ललचाता है यािेउस भोजि की बात सुिकर, उसे देखकर 
और उसे चख कर मि आकृष्ट होता है, उसके अिुसार उसकी सात्ववक, राजलसक या तामलसक निष्ठा 
मािी जाती है। 
भोजि, यज्ञ, तप, दाि आदद भी तीन प्रकार के होते है। जैसे पूजि तीि तरह का होता है, जैसे आहार तीन 
तरह का वप्रय होता है, उसी तरह शास्त्रीय-कमा भी तीन तरह के होते है – शास्त्र, सवसंग, वववेचि, 
वातायलाप, कहािी, पुस्तक, व्रत, तीथय, व्यत्क्त (अथायत लमत्रता, संगनत) आदद जो-जो भी सामिे आयेंगे, उिमें 
जो सात्ववक होगा वह सात्ववक मिुष्य को, जो राजस होगा वह राजस मिुष्य को और जो तामस होगा वह 
तामसी मिुष्य को वप्रय लगेगा। 
यूुँ समझिा चादहये कक जैसे शेर शेर की जमात में बैठता है, दहरि दहरिो के साथ ववचरता है, गाय गायों के 
साथ कफ़रती है वैसे, ही मिुष्य भी वैसी-वैसी स्थूल और सूक्ष्म संगनत (भोजि, लमत्रता, पठि-पाठि, श्रवि 
आदद) करिे वाले होतेहै।
मददरापाि के प्रभाव और पत्श्चमी सभ्यता के ज्ञािीजि के मत 
(सन्त िी बीसेंट के ववचार) 
▪ It is a literal fact that from everyone of our bodies emanations go out. They fall upon the 
bodies around them, upon human beings, plants, and minerals, and thus is continuing this 
constant interaction between all things amongst which we live, so as to make a link 
between you, and every body, and everything else, and constituting the drink habit not 
only a curse to the people who drink, but to the community and the nation. 
▪ Men who put alcohol into their bodies make the alcohol mark on the atoms of which those 
bodies are composed. They scatter those atoms, stamped with alcohol, over the whole of 
the community, and sober people get these atoms into their bodies and suffer in that 
fashion from the drunken habits of their neighbors. 
▪ A man has no more right to drink, and to scatter these poisoned atoms through the 
community, than he has a right, if he has small-pox, to go into an omnibus or cab and leave 
there the poison of smallpox to be absorbed by the next person who occupies the seat he 
has quitted.
Ramana Maharshi’s Revelations about Food & Fasting 
▪ Fasting should be chiefly mental. Like, ‘I will not harbor any ill-will of others today’. One 
should resolve to resort to harmonious and compassionate thoughts step-by-step. Such a 
‘fasting’ is liked by God, not the fasting from food. 
▪ Spiritual unfoldment will arrive by regulating the eating habits. “Sleep and food should not be 
taken in excess”. “The quality of food feeds the mind and it is the mind that matters…take 
Satvik food in limited quantities. This itself is a Yoga. First food-yoga and then only do mind-yoga, 
the results will be faster, fabulous and forbearing on the Self, the Knower. 
▪ Whilst he was still in teens, he experienced a few lasting changes in himself. All of a sudden he 
became meek and submissive to anyone and everyone. He had no longer any likes or dislikes 
for food. Whatever was given to him, tasty or insipid, good or bad, he would swallow with like 
indifference. 
▪ One day, thieves broke into the ashram and Maharshi counselled disciples and visitors to let 
them have anything they wanted. He remained calm during the incident even when struck by 
one of the thieves.

  • 1. Role of Diet in Our Spiritual Unfoldment The secret of being healthy and happy at all times is to be a little hungry at all times. Do not overload stomach, never ever. Over-eating is the chief cause of most diseases. The vast majority of persons dig their graves through their teeth.This tip is an insurance for being happy, healthy and harmonious for ever…Swami Sivananda An alcohol addict pollutes his physical, astral and mental cells apart from polluting the etheric environment around him. Our body is a divine artwork of God. Hence, we should take very best care of our body. Feeding physical body also feeds the inner subtle bodies. Our daily food habits have a revealing effect on our destiny, apart from general health and well-being.
  • 2. Swami Sivananda (from his book ‘Bliss Divine’) on Right Diet and Moderate Eating - 1 (He was a qualified medical doctor of great reputation before renouncing the material world) ▪ ‘Though we all boast ourselves as civilized men, yet, when the question of food comes, we falter and make blunders invariably. An average person eats twice as much as his system needs. It hinder assimilation, elimination and growth. All the organs get over-worked and get diseased quickly. Hence, avoid over-eating at all times; in fact, eat multiple times a day, but each time, in moderation’. ▪ ‘Next comes, the right kind of food intake. Remember, good food, healthy food is not expensive. A well-balanced diet is not costly. It is the knowledge of dietetics that we hopelessly lack’. ▪ Meat Diet Generates Diseases: Meat generates diseases, excites passions, and produces restlessness of mind. A very large number of medical men who have studied the subject of diet in relation to health are forbidding their patients to eat animal flesh, not only as a means of cure for such diseases as gout, rheumatism, etc., but also as a preventive against uric- acid ailments and diseases of many kinds, including cancer, and appendicitis.
  • 3. Swami Sivananda (from his book ‘Bliss Divine’) on Right Diet and Moderate Eating - 2 ▪ Flesh-eating involves the exercise of cruelty which is not an elevating virtue. It is a bestial quality which degrades man. Cruelty is condemned by all great men. Pythagoras (a great Mathematician, BrahmGyani and Spiritual Master) condemned meat diet as a sinful food. ▪ Man is created a frugivorous or fruit-eating creature. What is needed is a well-balanced diet, not a rich diet. A rich diet produces diseases of the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. A well-balanced diet helps a man to grow, to turn out more work, increases his body-weight, and keeps up efficiency, stamina, and a high standard of vim and vigor. ▪ People who are slaves to the flesh-eating habit cannot give up animal diet. They try to justify their habit by various arguments and statistics. One cannot change their ways merely by argumentation and disputation. It is best to shun their company and association beyond business matters.
  • 4. छान्दोग्य उपनिषद (6/5/4) में अन्ि का असर मि पर पड़िा बताया है– “जैसा अन्ि वैसा मि” 1. अन्न के सूक्ष्म सार-भाग से मन अर्ाात अन्तःकरण बनता है, 2. दूसरे िम्बर के भाग से वीययबिता है, 3. तीसरे िम्बर के (स्थूल) भाग से रक्त आदद 4. चौथे िम्बर के स्थूल भाग से मल बिता है। अतः मि को शुद्ध बिािेके ललये भोजि शुद्ध+पववत्र होिा चादहये। 5. भोजि बिािे वाले के भाव भी शुद्ध होिे चादहये। 6. भोजि करिे का स्थाि, वायुमण्डल, दृष्य, टेबल आदद सब साफ़, रौचक और पववत्र होिे चादहये। भोजि करतेसमय हमारा प्राणिक शरीर स्थूल शरीर के सभी रोमकूपो के द्वारा आसपास के परमािुओंको भी खींचता है, ग्रहि करता है। 7. भोजि करिेसे पहले हाथ, पैर और मुँहुअवश्य धोिे चादहये। इतिेसब तरीको सेभोजि हमारेमि को शुद्ध करता है।
  • 5. सात्ववक भोजि (गीता17/8) और राजलसक भोजि (गीता17/9) ▪ ‘सात्विक भोजन’ – त्जि-त्जि आहार को करिेसे आयु बढ़ती हो; जो गररष्ठ िहींपर सुपाच्य है और त्जिका सार बहुत ददिो तक शरीर में शत्क्त देता रहता है;और जो हृदय, फ़ेफ़ड़े आदद में सौम्य- भाव लािेवाले हो; रस-युनत हो (फ़ल, दूध, खाुँड, घी, मक्खि, बादाम, काजू, ककशलमश, सात्ववक बीजो/पदाथो सेनिकलेहुयेतैल आदद; स्िेहयुक्त भोजि के पदाथय, जो अच्छे पके हु और ताजे हो) – ऐसे सब सात्ववक भोजि कहे जाते है, बशतेउन्हें प्रसाद समझकर खाया जाये, त्जतनी भूख होिे उतना ही खाया जािे, अन्यर्ा िही सात्विक आहार राजससक आहार हो जाता है। ▪ ‘राजसी भोजन’ – करेला, ग्वारपाठा जैसेकड़ुवेपदाथयवांनछत मात्रा सेअधधक; इमली, िींबू,छाछ आदद अवयधधक खटाई युक्त पदाथयअधधक मात्रा में; अधधक िमकवाले पदाथय; अवयन्त गमयपदाथय;अवयन्त तीखे पदाथय (लाल-लमचयआदद) – ये सब राजसी आहार कहलातेहै, बशतेउन्हेंप्रसाद समझकर खाया जाये, अन्यर्ा िेतामससक हो जाते है। ▪ भोजि सदा ही ‘स्िल्पमात्रा’ में ही खािा चादहये, भोजि करिेके बाद पेट याद ि आये; क्योंकक पेट दो कारिो से ही याद आता है – बहुत अधधक खािेपर और बहुत कम खािे पर। रागी होिे से रजोगुिी पुरुष सबसे पहले भोजि पर दृत्ष्ट डालता है – यह राजस-वृवि का धोतक है।
  • 6. गीता 17/10 – ‘तामसी भोजन’ 1. बबि मौसम के फ़ल, आधे पके हु आहार, सार-रदहत आहार; 2. सड़ि से पैदा करी हुई मददरा; 3. रज-वीययके संयोग से उवपन्ि मांस,मछली,अुँडा आदद जो मुदाय पदाथय है, वे महाि अपववत्र है; 4. बासी + दुगयन्ध-वाले पदाथय; 5. जूंठा छोड़ा हुआ भोजि; 6. प्राणियों की दृत्ष्ट का भी आहार पर प्रभाव पड़ता है, बुरे व्यवि की या भूखे कुिेकी िजर यदद भोजि पर पड़ती है तो वह अशुद्ध हो जाता है। 7. अन्ि और जल मेंवािी का प्रभाव पड़ता है, इसीललयेज्ञािीजि ककसी के हाथ का पािी भी िहींपीते, खािे की तो बात ही जािेदो। 8. झूठ, कपट, चौरी, डकैती, धोखे-बाजी आदद पापी उपायों से पैसे कमा ुँ जायुँतो वह भोजि तामसी ही होता है। यदद शुद्ध बुद्धध वाला उस भोजि को क बार भी करे, तो उसकी बुद्धध कुबुद्धध हो जाती है। इसललयेबुद्धधमाि वेहोतेहै, जो काल का ग्रास बिेबबिा भगवाि की शरि हो जातेहै (7/24)। ऐसेलोग ककसी का ददया अन्ि कभी ग्रहि िहींकरते। इतिा सहजिा पड़ता है, भगवद-शरि में जािेके ललये।
  • 7. मददरापाि करिेवालेमहापापी है– छान्दोग्य 5/10/9 ▪ मददरापाि करिेवालो को शास्त्रो मेंमहापापी कहा गया है। मददरा-पाि मांस-भक्षि सेभी अधधक निन्दिीय और पति करिेवाला कृवय है। मददरा के निमायि में असंख्य जीवो की हवया होती है। मददरापान से सबसे भयंकर हानन यह हैकक इससे अन्तःकरण में रहनेिाले धमाके अँकुर नष्ट हो जाते है; अर्ाात मनुष्य के अन्दर जो धासमाक भािनाएँ, धासमाक विचार और धमा के संस्कार रहते है, उनको मददरापान नष्ट कर देता है और मिुष्य महाि पति की तरफ़ चला जाता है। ▪ डाक्टरो सेपूछिेपर कोई जवाब िहींलमल सकता लेककि क ज्ञाियोगी यह बतायगा कक मािव शरीर का प्रवयेक अंग स्थूलता के अनतररक्त सूक्ष्म और आध्यात्वमक उपलत्धधयों मेंभी कारिभूत होता है। जैसे Tonsils को निकलवा देिेवाला मौि रहिेकी शत्क्त खो देता है। जो Appendix को surgery द्वारा निकलवा देतेहै, वेसूक्ष्म शरीर की लम्बी उड़ाि िहींभर पाते, उिको अतीत्न्िय दृत्ष्ट, सूक्ष्म दृत्ष्ट (Clairvoyance) कभी ि प्राप्त हो सकेगी, जो क ददव्य लसद्धध होती है। ▪ कृबत्रम उपायों सेसन्तनत-निरोध कराकर भोगबुद्धध सेकाम मेंप्रवृत होिा यािेमहाि िरको का द्वार- प्रवेश करिा है। सजयरी द्वारा सन्तनत-निरोध करािेवालेस्त्री-पुरुष देव-काययऔर वपतृ-काययकरिेका अधधकार खो देतेहै(7/11)।
  • 8. भोजि द्वारा निष्ठा की पहचाि (गीता 17/7) भोजन द्िारा ननष्ठा की पहचान – जो लोग यजि-पूजि िहीं करते हों, शास्त्र का ज्ञाि भी ि रखते हों, चाहे वे ईसाई हो, यहुदी हो, नात्स्तक हो या आत्स्तक हो, उिकी निष्ठा की पहचाि उिके आहार के द्िारा करी जा सकती है। मिुष्य का मन स्िाभाविक ही त्जस भोजि में ललचाता है यािेउस भोजि की बात सुिकर, उसे देखकर और उसे चख कर मि आकृष्ट होता है, उसके अिुसार उसकी सात्ववक, राजलसक या तामलसक निष्ठा मािी जाती है। भोजि, यज्ञ, तप, दाि आदद भी तीन प्रकार के होते है। जैसे पूजि तीि तरह का होता है, जैसे आहार तीन तरह का वप्रय होता है, उसी तरह शास्त्रीय-कमा भी तीन तरह के होते है – शास्त्र, सवसंग, वववेचि, वातायलाप, कहािी, पुस्तक, व्रत, तीथय, व्यत्क्त (अथायत लमत्रता, संगनत) आदद जो-जो भी सामिे आयेंगे, उिमें जो सात्ववक होगा वह सात्ववक मिुष्य को, जो राजस होगा वह राजस मिुष्य को और जो तामस होगा वह तामसी मिुष्य को वप्रय लगेगा। यूुँ समझिा चादहये कक जैसे शेर शेर की जमात में बैठता है, दहरि दहरिो के साथ ववचरता है, गाय गायों के साथ कफ़रती है वैसे, ही मिुष्य भी वैसी-वैसी स्थूल और सूक्ष्म संगनत (भोजि, लमत्रता, पठि-पाठि, श्रवि आदद) करिे वाले होतेहै।
  • 9. मददरापाि के प्रभाव और पत्श्चमी सभ्यता के ज्ञािीजि के मत (सन्त िी बीसेंट के ववचार) ▪ It is a literal fact that from everyone of our bodies emanations go out. They fall upon the bodies around them, upon human beings, plants, and minerals, and thus is continuing this constant interaction between all things amongst which we live, so as to make a link between you, and every body, and everything else, and constituting the drink habit not only a curse to the people who drink, but to the community and the nation. ▪ Men who put alcohol into their bodies make the alcohol mark on the atoms of which those bodies are composed. They scatter those atoms, stamped with alcohol, over the whole of the community, and sober people get these atoms into their bodies and suffer in that fashion from the drunken habits of their neighbors. ▪ A man has no more right to drink, and to scatter these poisoned atoms through the community, than he has a right, if he has small-pox, to go into an omnibus or cab and leave there the poison of smallpox to be absorbed by the next person who occupies the seat he has quitted.
  • 10. Ramana Maharshi’s Revelations about Food & Fasting ▪ Fasting should be chiefly mental. Like, ‘I will not harbor any ill-will of others today’. One should resolve to resort to harmonious and compassionate thoughts step-by-step. Such a ‘fasting’ is liked by God, not the fasting from food. ▪ Spiritual unfoldment will arrive by regulating the eating habits. “Sleep and food should not be taken in excess”. “The quality of food feeds the mind and it is the mind that matters…take Satvik food in limited quantities. This itself is a Yoga. First food-yoga and then only do mind-yoga, the results will be faster, fabulous and forbearing on the Self, the Knower. ▪ Whilst he was still in teens, he experienced a few lasting changes in himself. All of a sudden he became meek and submissive to anyone and everyone. He had no longer any likes or dislikes for food. Whatever was given to him, tasty or insipid, good or bad, he would swallow with like indifference. ▪ One day, thieves broke into the ashram and Maharshi counselled disciples and visitors to let them have anything they wanted. He remained calm during the incident even when struck by one of the thieves.
