BIOTECHNOLOGY IN
PHARMACEUTICS
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY IN
PHARMACEUTICS
• Biotechnology is a relatively new and
growing field in which the principles of
biotechnology are applied to the
development of drugs such as
antibodies, nucleic acid products and
insulin, vaccine etc.
SIGNIFICANCE
• Biotechnology is commonly used to
improve medicines due to the advantages
and pieces of knowledge it provides such
as:
• Understanding the genetic composition of
the human species.
• Foundational structure of hereditary
diseases.
• manipulation and repairing of damaged
genes to cure diseases
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY IN
PHARMACEUTICS
• Biotechnology helps the pharmaceutical
industry to develop new products, new
processes, methods and services and to
improve existing ones. A majority of
therapeutic drugs in the current market
are bioformulations. Such
bioformulations are developed through
several stages that include :
• Understanding the principles underlying
health and disease. The fundamental
molecular mechanisms governing the
function of related biomolecules;
synthesis and purification of the
molecules.
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
IN COSMETICS
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
IN COSMETICS
• Cosmetics companies use biotechnology:
• To discover, develop, and produce components of
cosmetic formulations.
• To evaluate the activity of these components on
the skin, in particular how they can affect the
changes associated with aging.
IMPORTANCE
• Beyond physical health, cosmetics can help
to improve our mood, enhance our
appearance and boost our self-esteem. They
can also help to exhibit personal style and, as
such, are an important means of social
expression.
• Cosmetics are a prime element in
complementing in individual’s inherent
beauty and physical featured. Like women ,
men too have started using cosmetics in their
daily routine. Most brands have started
coming up with cosmetics specially designed
for men.
APPLICATIONS
• There are a large number of differing
cosmetics used for a variety of different
purposes, all cosmetics are typically
intended to be applied externally. These
products can be applied to the face (on the
skin, lips, eyebrows and eyes), to the body
(on the skin, in particular the hands and
nails), and to the hair.
• Cosmetics designed for skin care can be
used to cleanse, protect the skin, as well as
replenishing it, by the use of cleansers,
toners, serums, moisturizers, and balms.
Cosmetics designed for more general
personal care, such as shampoo and body
wash, can be used to cleanse the body
ROLE OF
BIOCHEMISTRY IN
ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
IMPORTANCE
Biotechnology could put a stop to its environmental impact
by replacing polluting chemical processes and making textile waste
recyclable and biodegradable. Enzymes are already used routinely to
wash and bleach clothing and to prevent wool from shrinking.
Products developed with agricultural biotechnology may contribute
to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, such as cover crops
that provide sustainable biofuels , fruits and vegetables that stay
fresh longer and reduce food waste.
CONTROL
• Some of the areas where biotechnology has
proved very effective in environmental clean-
up include:
• Landfill Technologies
• Bioremediation
• Biosensors
• Oil Eating Bugs
• Designer Bugs
• Pollution Control
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
IN FOOD
PRODUCTS
FOOD
BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Food biotechnology is the use of
technology to modify the genes of
our food sources.
• Our food sources are animals,
plants, and microorganisms.
• Food producers can use new
biotechnology to produce new
products with desirable
characteristics.
IMPORTANCE
• With food biotechnology, we create new
species of animals and plants.
• Food Biotechnology has importance in the
industry by making enormous
improvement in the quality, nutritional
content, health benefits, taste etc. in a
particular food Item.
• With food biotechnology, we use what we
know about science and genetics to
improve the food we eat.
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
IN AGRICULTURE
IMPORTANCE
• Biotechnology has many other useful
applications besides those that are medically
related. Many of these are in agriculture and
food science. These include the development
of transgenic crops - the placement of genes
into plants to give the crop a beneficial trait.
• Production of vaccines in crop plants:
Modern biotechnology is increasingly being
applied for novel uses other than food. Banana
trees and tomato plants have been genetically
engineered to produce vaccines in their fruit.
BENEFITS
• Improved yield from crops:
Using biotechnology techniques, one or two
genes may be transferred into a crop to give
a new trait to that crop. This is done in the
hope of increasing its yield.
• Reduced dependence on fertilizers ,
pesticides and other agrochemicals:
Modern biotechnology in agriculture are
focused on reducing the dependence of
farmers on the pesticides and fertilizers. For
example, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a soil
bacterium that produces a protein that can
act as an insecticide, known as the Bt toxin.
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
IN MEDICINE
MEDICINE
BIOTECHNOLOGY
• “It is a branch of medicine that uses living
cells and cell materials to research and then
produce pharmaceutical and diagnosing
products. These products help treat and
prevent diseases.”
• Vaccines, antibiotics, and hormones are
examples of products obtained by
recombinant DNA technology. Transgenic
animals have been created for experimental
purposes and some are used to produce
some human proteins.
IMPORTANCE
• Biotechnology is an important field that is
applied to these sectors with the aim of
improving the different targeted genes and
customized medicines . There are numerous
methods applied to biotechnology such as gene
treatment , recombinant DNA technology .
• The name of drug used in cancer treatment
produced by biotechnology is interferon.
Interferons are a family of naturally-occurring
proteins that are made and secreted by cells of
the immune system. Interferons can promote or
hinder the ability of some cells to
differentiate i.e. to become specialized in their
function.
VACCINE
WHAT IS
VACCINE??
“A vaccine is a suspension of weakened, killed, or
fragmented microorganisms or toxins or other
biological preparation, such as those consisting of
antibodies, lymphocytes, or mRNA, that is
administered primarily to prevent disease.”
• Biotechnology can help a vaccine
production starting from the design and
component exploration processes, everything
needs to be antigenic and immunogenic
components which can ensure effectiveness of
the vaccine when it enters the body of the
receiver.
HOW
BIOTECHNOLOGY
HELP IN
PREVENTION OF
DISEASE ?
• PRODUCTION OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES
OF VACCINES:
Vaccination is administration of antigenic
material (Vaccine) to stimulate an individual’s
immune system to develop immunity against
pathogen
• TYPES OF VACCINES:
1. Inactivated vaccines
2. DNA vaccines
3. mRNA vaccines
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
IN COVID-19
ROLE OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
IN COVID-19
• Biotechnology has been playing a vital role in
understanding how diseases spread and how fatal
they can potentially be to humans.
• Tools that can accurately predict diseases and can
change the course a disease takes can easily be
created using biotechnology. Scientists are able to
understand, from where a disease is originated,
based on scientific tracing methods.
• Different drugs are repurposed for several diseases
by a method called drug-repositioning. Through
drug repurposing, approved drugs that were used
in the treatment of other diseases were used for
the treatment of COVID-19.

  • 24. WHAT IS VACCINE?? “A vaccine is a suspension of weakened, killed, or fragmented microorganisms or toxins or other biological preparation, such as those consisting of antibodies, lymphocytes, or mRNA, that is administered primarily to prevent disease.” • Biotechnology can help a vaccine production starting from the design and component exploration processes, everything needs to be antigenic and immunogenic components which can ensure effectiveness of the vaccine when it enters the body of the receiver.
  • 25. HOW BIOTECHNOLOGY HELP IN PREVENTION OF DISEASE ? • PRODUCTION OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF VACCINES: Vaccination is administration of antigenic material (Vaccine) to stimulate an individual’s immune system to develop immunity against pathogen • TYPES OF VACCINES: 1. Inactivated vaccines 2. DNA vaccines 3. mRNA vaccines

  • 29. ROLE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN COVID-19 • Biotechnology has been playing a vital role in understanding how diseases spread and how fatal they can potentially be to humans. • Tools that can accurately predict diseases and can change the course a disease takes can easily be created using biotechnology. Scientists are able to understand, from where a disease is originated, based on scientific tracing methods. • Different drugs are repurposed for several diseases by a method called drug-repositioning. Through drug repurposing, approved drugs that were used in the treatment of other diseases were used for the treatment of COVID-19.
