Road safety and accident prevention in IndiaRohit Sharma
Road accidents are a human tragedy. They involve high human suffering and monetary costs in terms of untimely deaths, injuries and loss of potential income. Although we have undertaken many initiatives and are implementing various road safety improvement program the overall situation as revealed by data is far from satisfactory. During the calendar year 2010, there were close to 5 lakh road accidents in India, which resulted in more than 1.3 lakh persons. These numbers translate intone road accident every minute, and one road accident death every 4 minutes. Unfortunately, more than half the victims are in the economically active age group of 25-65 years. The loss of the main bread winner can be catastrophic.
Road traffic accidents are amenable to remedial action. Many a countries have curbed the menace of road accidents by
adopting a multipronged approach to road safety that encompasses broad range of measures, such as, traffic management, design and quality of road infrastructure, application of intelligent transport system, safer vehicles, law enforcement, effective and quick accident response and care etc. The Government alone cannot tackle road safety problems. There is a need for active involvement of all stake- holders to promote policy reform and implementation of road safety measures.
Addressing road safety is comprehensive manner underscores the need to involve multiple agencies and sectors like health, transport and police. The present study provides the magnitude and various dimensions of road accident in India. The analysis on road accidents in this study will help to create awareness, guidelines and assist in informed decision making on road safety.

Epidemiology, prevention and control of road traffic accidentsDr.Hemant Kumar
Road Traffic Accidents(RTAs)are Major Global Health problems and 8th leading cause of death leading to more than 1.2 million deaths and 20-50 million injuries annually. While the situation in many countries in now improving, India still holds the dubious distinction of being only country who faces more than 14 fatalities and 53 injuries every hour due to RTA.
Road Accidents in India: A GIS Epidemiology studyVaibhav Bagaria
A presentation about the epidemiology of road trauma in India. Also how innovative use of technology like GIS when combined with the trauma epidemiology can help prevent these cases in developing countries like India.
Although the road transport sector is crucial for the overall development of a country, if it is not managed in an organized manner, it can have a negative impact. In Ethiopia, fatalities due to traffic accidents is very high compared to the SSA.
Data play a critical role in reducing road traffic accident by identifying the right causes. Ethiopia can use Transport Management System mobile application to empower citizens, acquire real-time data regarding misconduct of drives, overloading of taxis, and traffic accidents. This will help to design policies and strategies to tackle major causes of traffic accidents.
This report includes a focus on seven key recommendations that are both specific and
actionable. A major role of the Task Force work has been to create shared understanding
across many disciplines, that removing obstacles to safe driving is crucial to healthy ageing and
managing our expanding lifespan successfully.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

3. What is road safety?
Road traffic safety refers to the methods and measures that can be
taken for reducing the risk of a person’s life, who is using the road
networks for beng killed or seriously injured. Roads usually have
pedestrian, cyclists, motorists, and passengers in buses, trams etc.
But there is ignorance and negligence due to which there are injuries
and deaths taking place .
Road accident is the most unwanted thing to happen. Though they
occur quite often but still we don’t bother to learn from our mistakes.
4. But, why do these accidents happen?
Most of the road users are well-verse of the general rules, regulations and safety
measures while using the road but it is the laxity on part of the road users which
results in accidents and crashes occurring on roads.
But, the main reasons of road accidents can be listed as follows;
oOver speeding
oOvertaking
oDrunken driving
oDistractions to driver
oDisobeying traffic signals
oAvoiding safety gears; seatbelts , helmets etc.
oUnawareness of rules and regulations
oDisobeying lane driving
5.
6. 1. Approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road traffic
crashes.
2. The2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has set an ambitious target of
halving the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by
2020.
3. Road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product.
4. More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users:
pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
5. 93% of the world's fatalities on the roads occur in low- and middle-income
countries, even though these countries have approximately 60% of the world's
vehicles.
6. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young
adults aged 5-29 years.
ROAD ACCIDENT STATISTICS
7. 7. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many
incurring a disability as a result of their injury.
8. More than 90% of road traffic deaths occur in low- and
middle-income countries. Road traffic injury death rates are highest in the African
region.
9. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults
aged 5-29 years.
10. From a young age, males are more likely to be involved in road traffic crashes
than females. About three quarters (73%) of all road traffic deaths occur among
young males under the age of 25 years who are almost 3 times as likely to be killed
in a road traffic crash as young females.
8. STEPS TO BE TAKEN FOR PREVENTING ROAD ACCIDENTS;
1. Most important method to bring down accidents is strict
enforcement of speed limits.
2. 90% of accidents can be avoided by strict enforcement of speed
limits.
3. Existing speed limits should be brought down further.
4.High penalties should be charged on all those who cross the speed
limits. If this is strictly implemented no one would ever dare to cross
the speed limits.
5. Also high penalties should be imposed on those who disobey traffic
rules or leads to an accident.
