 H.T & L.T Distribution System
 Maintenance of Electrical Equipment
& Coaches
 Control Panel
 Wiring of Cables
 Conclusion
INTRODUCTION
The first proposals for railways in india were made madras in 1832.
 The first train in India ran from Red Hill to chintadripet bridge in
madras in 1837. It was called Red Hill Railway.
 The first passanger train in india ran between Bombay (Bori
Bunder and Thane on 16 April 1853 haulded by sahib , sindh &
sultan
 It ran for about 34 kilometer between these two cities carrying 400
people.
 Indian Railway is the second biggest electrified system in the world
In India 35000 approx KM of total routes are electrified.

SUBSTATION
 A Substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission,
and distribution system.
 Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or
perform any of several other important functions.
Here the incoming supply is 132kv which is further transferred to
25kv with the help of transformer to 25 kv AC single phase
Spacing between TSS is 30km to 40 km depending upon the traffic
(load)
To avoid load on one phase and balancing the incoming supply grid
TSS is divided in to sub sector through switching post
 S.P sectioning and paralleling
SSP sub sectioning and paralleling post
CURRENT TRANSFORER
 Current transformer is used for
measurement of alternating
electric current.
 When current in a circuit is too
high to apply directly to measuring
instrument a current transformer
produces a reduced
 current accurately proportional to
the current in the circuit, which can
be conveniently connected to
measuring & recording instrument.
POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER
 Potential transformers have a large
no. of primary turns & a few no. of
secondary turns.
 Potential transformers are used in
electrical power system for
stepping down the system voltage
to safe value which can be fed to
low rating meter & relays.
CIRCUIT BREAKER
 The function of circuit breaker is to
provide opening and closing the
current carrying contacts.
 Electrical circuit breaker is a switching
device which can be operated manually as
well as automatically for controlling and
protection of electrical power system
respectively.
SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM OF – POWER SUPPLY
CONTROL PANEL
H T AND L T LINE
Low tension (LT) lines have low voltage (less than 1kv) and high current
distribution. (eg 230 /440). The power supplying to our household
applications are at LT. it is used to transmit power at very small distances
and uses thicker conductor.
High tension (HT) lines are using much higher voltages
(11kv,33kv,66kv,110kv).
It is used to transmit power to large distance by increasing voltage and
decreasing current.
MAINTENANCE OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS &
COACHES
 Maintenance of Electrical Equipment & coaches of train
performance in two parts.
a) Train Lighting:- Train Lighting by electricity in practice in 1897 .
There are three types of here
1. End on Generating System
2. Head on generating System
3. Self on generating system
END ON GENERATION
 Supply electricity to individual coaches
a) A 24V, 90Ah Battery is provided under frame along with battery charger to
provide emergency lighting in times of power failure.
b) Mainly used in full air conditioned trains.
 Employ two power at the both ends of train
Power car fitted with 2*750kva Diesel Generator Sets
INSULATOR
 An electrical insulator is a material
whose internal electric charge do not
flow freely & therefore make it very
hard to conduct an electric current
under the influence of an electric
field.
 In railway use two type insulator
1) Pin type insulator
2) Suspension type insulator
RELAY
 A protective relay is a device which
detect the fault.
 It is to detect after their go to
command circuit breaker.
It is provide to safety in electrical
equipments. A protective relay is a
device which detect the fault.
 It is to detect after their go to
command circuit breaker.
It is provide to safety in electrical
equipments.
LIGHTNING ARRESTER
 Lighting arrester provide protection to
all equipment against the high voltage.
 They are connected between the line &
ground at the substation & always
parallel with the equipment to be
protected.

High tension (HT) lines are using much higher voltages (11kv,33kv,66kv,110kv). It is used to transmit power to large distance by increasing voltage and decreasing current.
  • 13. MAINTENANCE OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS & COACHES  Maintenance of Electrical Equipment & coaches of train performance in two parts. a) Train Lighting:- Train Lighting by electricity in practice in 1897 . There are three types of here 1. End on Generating System 2. Head on generating System 3. Self on generating system
  • 14. END ON GENERATION  Supply electricity to individual coaches a) A 24V, 90Ah Battery is provided under frame along with battery charger to provide emergency lighting in times of power failure. b) Mainly used in full air conditioned trains.  Employ two power at the both ends of train Power car fitted with 2*750kva Diesel Generator Sets
  • 15. INSULATOR  An electrical insulator is a material whose internal electric charge do not flow freely & therefore make it very hard to conduct an electric current under the influence of an electric field.  In railway use two type insulator 1) Pin type insulator 2) Suspension type insulator
  • 16. RELAY  A protective relay is a device which detect the fault.  It is to detect after their go to command circuit breaker. It is provide to safety in electrical equipments. • 17. LIGHTNING ARRESTER  Lighting arrester provide protection to all equipment against the high voltage.  They are connected between the line & ground at the substation & always parallel with the equipment to be protected.
