What is C2G? Discuss goal of HS so we discuss what it takes to C2G from day one. Our job as counselors
This is proposed but we anticipate to be finalized in coming months.
Two main types of diplomas
Discuss difference between standard and verified credits â in red are new/recent changes
Recent changes â only three social studies for standard
Standard diploma: no World Language requirement
EPF â can satisfy Virtual Course and Industry Certification requirement
Last two requirements are check boxes not credits
Advanced diploma:
World Language requirement, extra year of Social Studies, Science and Math
Honors/AP classes are not required for the Advanced diploma
Colleges do not require the Advanced diploma, but the courses required may align with what colleges are looking for
Wide range of skill levels
Teacher recommendation is critical to finding the right placement
Environmental Science â new 9th grade science offering
More hands on, problem based learning environment
Foundational course that gives additional science preparation before Biology.
Real world science application
No SOL
Biology
Heavier reading course than E.S.
SOL
Biology Honors
Science Honors classes require the Science Fair project (students can still participate in Science Fair in on-level but are not required to)
SOL
Teacher recommendation for upper level World Language courses is important
- You are able to repeat if you are struggling and want to do your current language class again next year.
- Reminder: FCPS requires two years of Health/PE for graduation
AP Human Geography: is available to freshmen but you have to have strong study habits to take an AP course in 9th grade (talk to Social Studies teacher for recommendation if interested)
EPF: available for all grades, but often recommended for 11th and 12th graders or can take it over the summer in the future
Technology Education courses: need solid math skills for these courses
Academy class available to rising 9th graders: Dance 1 (if interested, talk to your counselor â there is an application)
Courses that require application and interview: AVID and Leadership Training
Emphasize how important it is to choose the right courses now â if you try to switch your courses after the school year begins it may not be available
(Provide student with course catalog â includes the course selection sheet)
Course selection sheet is given to counselor during advising meeting
Make sure to select 7 courses and include 2 alternate electives on course selection sheet
Once the school year begins, cannot drop Honors/AP course for the first quarter (importance of finding the right placement now)
