Editor's Notes
Cook basic things (confidence comes when we build confidence)
Not always there to help them
Their own laundry
Know how to drive – they need to pump gas and pay for it
Chores – being part of a community at work or at school (not just me…)
Your student should be e-mailing teachers, counselors, ect. Have them CC you. But through this transition you can help by checking their grades at least on a quarterly basis and encouraging your son or daughter to contact teachers in they have concerns.
Establish a consistent study area (no electronics), study breaks 30-45 minutes, students share grades with you (at least quarterly).
Have conversations AHEAD of time about expenses. – link checking accounts. Student should be responsible for parking tickets, speeding tickets, driving school, and so on. Warning about credit cards.
At 18 – students can go to the doctor/dentist by themselves. They can pick up prescriptions. Make sure they have a copy of their insurance card.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Senior year will fly by. There are 266 days until graduation.
Important to mention that many of the students may already have started down your path through an academy course, etc.
Understanding all these options requires a process. Start researching your plan now and share what you hope to do with parents, family, friends, so they can support you.
4 year schools - Bachelors Degree Public vs. Private; In-State vs. Out-of-State
2 year schools - 2-Year Schools Associates Degree NOVA Pathways
Cosmopolitan beauty and tech school is located in Annandale - Career and Technical School Career Specific Certification (ex. Culinary, Cyber Security, Truck Driving)
Difference Military options – ASVAB is offered at WP on 11/20/19 and 3/24/20. Your score is good for two years. Branches are Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. Other topics to discuss - Military Enlisting, ROTC, and 5 Service Academies
Internship – (example) – Northern Virginia Magazine, a lifestyle glossy covering one of the country’s most affluent regions, offers a hands-on, paid internship for enthusiastic students looking to gain real-life experience in the magazine industry. Internships can lead to - Employment: discuss the importance of upward mobility, benefits that may include education etc..
ACE - Apprenticeships: Very job specific, Journeymen/ Union plumber, welder etc..
Gap Year: Student sought/selected experience to possibly mature or travel. Some structured programs with applications ex: City Year, Year Up. GAP Year fairs also available. George C. Marshall High School Tuesday, February 4, 2020 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Encourage students to finalize their list of possible pathways this fall with different options (i.e. NOVA then transfer; employment; college visits)
Colleges keep track of your interest – call, visit, e-mail your rep with questions

Watch your deadlines!!
Priority Deadline – schools may have this deadline to get your information in to be eligible for scholarships – Priority means MONEY
We want to support but you need to give us time to do so.
Waitlisted: Students may not hear until June, July or never if they are accepted – still need commit somewhere on May 1
Early decision plans are binding — a student who is accepted as an ED applicant must attend the college.
Early action plans are nonbinding — students receive an early response to their application but do not have to commit to the college until the normal reply date of May 1.
Colleges with rolling admissions evaluate applications as they are received versus waiting to evaluate all applications after a hard deadline. Schools will continue to evaluate applications until they've filled all the slots for their incoming class.
Deferred – pushed back to the regular decision pool which means you might be on the “Bubble” and they want to take a 2nd look.
Regular decision or rolling admission deferral – may want to see more information (i.e. additional test scores or grades)
Waitlisted – if a top prospect declines, they start using the list. You have no control on the timing of this decision
Talk about Common APP - students can apply to multiple colleges via the Common Ap portal vs. School Specific Applications. Possible Coalition Application
Fees will range from 25 to 100. Students on Free and Reduced Lunch that have used an SAT wavier will receive 4 college fee waiver codes and forms. Others will need to see their counselor or Ms. Carter if a fee waiver is needed.
All Coalition schools accept transcripts and other documents via eDocs. You do not need to create a separate Coalition account (it is an approved portal) as it will save you a step by utilizing eDocs. Students must tell you that they applied via Coalition (as they do for Common Application) so that Transcript Assistants can change the transcript delivery within eDocs. All transcript assistants have been sent information on how to do so. School Counselors can also change the delivery designation once the transcript assistant has entered in the schools for that student from the Naviance Staff side
Those who still need to sign up see the upcoming dates – if you are eligible for free and reduced get a waiver in CCC
Students must send scores through the SAT or ACT websites
Plug our PTSA Test Prep Program
They have a website on West Potomac’s site
Discuss the importance of “waiving” your right to see your information and that parent/student must sign this form.
Highlight the process, fees and deadlines. Make sure you check to see what the school requires.
Online on WPHS website, google classroom, or see Ms. Hofmann
First ED deadline is 10/15 (Uva)
First EA deadline is 10/15 (University of South Carolina)
Review each column and requirements
Transcript Fees – First 3 are free, everyone there after is 5 dollars and there is a late fee!!! Emphasize deadlines
Transcript Fees – First 3 are free, everyone there after is 5 dollars and there is a late fee!!!

Did you know you get alerted if one of your “colleges I’m thinking about” visits WPHS?
Did you know we log when your transcript was sent and you can see it here?
Have you used the college search engines located here at your finger tips?
Highlight the first session will be on 9/5 that will further discuss the application process.
Financial Aid Champion, Katrina Rowsey (khrowsey@fcps.edu), is available to meet with students and parents/guardians throughout the year in the College & Career Center to assist in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile.
Emphasis on the appropriate amount of schools to apply to (4-6)

Time for questions if there are any and review content of senior handbook.
