The Rh blood group system is one of the most important in transfusion medicine. It was discovered in 1939 when a woman had an immune response after being transfused with her Rh-positive husband's blood after the birth of their stillborn, Rh-positive baby. The Rh factor is inherited according to Mendelian genetics as either dominant Rh-positive or recessive Rh-negative. Issues can occur when an Rh-negative mother is pregnant with an Rh-positive baby if her immune system is exposed and develops anti-Rh antibodies, which can cause problems in future Rh-positive pregnancies. This is prevented with Rh immunoglobulin treatment.
