Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal disorder in premature infants that can lead to vision loss. It occurs when the retina fails to properly vascularize in low birth weight preterm babies. Risk factors include being born before 32 weeks gestation or weighing less than 1500g, exposure to supplemental oxygen, and other medical complications. ROP progresses through five stages, from mild abnormal blood vessel growth to complete retinal detachment. Screening exams are conducted regularly in at-risk infants to detect ROP, and severe cases may be treated with cryotherapy or laser treatment to prevent vision loss from retinal detachment. Complications can include myopia, strabismus, and glaucoma.
