Hello All! My name is Teauna Upshaw, Founder and Managing Director of Workforce Initiatives. I welcome you to this call and commend you for using your self motivation to evaluate the effectiveness of your resume. As a professional resume writer with experience in the workforce industry I’ve tackled staffing, recruitment and other aspects within the Human Resources environment. What I find most is the understanding of a resume is misinterpreted amongst most. As a candidate you know you can do the job and you are the top candidate, but at times from a recruiters eyes there are many top candidates. A resume is an aspect of the job search that is to be used as your developer. Your resume should highlight your “greatest”………..
A resume is a marketing tool to highlight your credentials, tells your story, a professional book report on you and must distinguishes you from other candidates. Why is your story or book better? Think about when you make a purchase or something grabs your interest. These details are comparable to the hiring official making a decision to consider you further based on your resume. Today we will review the following aspects of a resume. As we move through this brief seminar, you should have your existing resume in front of you, a notepad, pen and highlighter. Use these tools to take notes, highlight areas that indicate “yes” I am on the right page and take notes of areas you need to dig deeper into and revise. After the seminar you will receive a short questionnaire to weigh the impact of your resume. There are going to be two options upon completion. Your resume is working for you or you need to update/revise/develop your resume. Either way, as a the Founder of Workforce Initiatives I want you to understand key points of focus of the resume and it’s role in the job search.
Why do you need a resume? What is the purpose for your resume? What do you want it to do? Once you understand why you need a resume you have set the foundation to develop your resume. The purpose of your resume must speak to your audience clearly on the position or industry you are seeking an opportunity in. If you just want a job, you increase your chances by being more specific on the type of job.
These are the common components of a resume. Each individual will not use all these components. You must use the components that compliment your position/industry in the workforce.
What do you want to do? Why should you be considered on what you do? There are various ways to present your objective through, headers or a professional summary
Credentials include your proudest moments. Did you pass a certification exam? Are you on the board of an organization? Did you graduate from HS, College, etc.? What is the position asking for?
Job Titles – Make sure your job titles can be understood by your audience. At times company job titles fit the company, but may not fit the title of the positions/industry you are applying for. Keywords: Keywords play a big role in your resume especially for scanning purposes. Most resume job boards and companies ask you to submit your resume online. Specific Details: Keywords also include action verbs as to how well you performed the task. These words include efficient, successful, proficiently, timely, etc. Be careful not to bullet point a list on what you did, what’s important is how well you did it. Also, add value with numbers, percentages to weigh in on how well you performed. Dates : Dates are sensitive and must be evaluated accordingly with appropriate formatting. Dates impact your commitment, your ability to stay with a job, dates indicate are you job hopping, are you progressing. Dates are coupled with the job titles they tell a story. Format : Your resume must be arranged to display your true assets that are important to the employer. If education is a requirement, then that should stand out and be first, if experience is important that should be front and center as with the keywords that .are relevent to the position/industry. Relevant Courses, etc.: Be mindful on the data you list on your resume to assure it is relevant for hethe position or industrylyou are seeking. Volunteer Experience: If you’ve volunteered with an organization and have applied skills and abilities that are relevant to your industry/position, they look great on resume. For example, are you seeking an opportunity in accounting and you handle the tithes and offering at church, are you or were you in charge of collecting money at a charity event, etc. For example, if you went to college for chemistry and are seeking a position in management. You do want to display your education but you really don’t have to list that your major was chemistry. Simply list that you attending school and if you graduated list the date and degree you obtained. Also, if you went to school and did not complete a degree program, you can list the courses that are relevant to your position/industry focus. This also includes seminars, workshops or professional development. Have you read any professional development books? List them, if they are relevant.
The economic conditions have transitioned to a more competitive workforce either if you are employed or not employed. Organizations re-organizing to re-look at how to make their organizations stronger to sustain depressions and recessions. This has led to increased competition amongst candidates, hiring hesitation, doing more with less and changing requirements. Competition: Layoffs from business decisions have left the economy with more available talent. This is displayed from the unemployment numbers. Since more are looking for work along with the change in technology such as social media the job search strategy has truly changed. Networking, social media play a key part and benefit in your job search strategy. That’s another presentation but a resume can support your social media profiles, it’s simply can mirror your professional summary. Hiring Hesitation: Organizations have re-organized their hiring and staffing needs. Temporary staffing and temp to hire are common options for employers to determine need and bottom line fit. Does this position need to be filled permanently. More with less : Another impact from economic conditions is the employer seeking to use 1 employee for multiple functions, check your industry what skills are needed. Are you a bookkeeper that can handle taxes as well or do you only know how to handle the bookkeeping. Can you operate a forklift and lead a team effectively or are you solely a forklift operator or manager. Another example, can you sell products and design an effective marketing plan. Evaluate your skills and see what other skills can compliment your prospective roles or how you can bring more to the table in one role. Educational Credential: Some organizations seek educational credentials and some seek actual experience or a combination of both. In this area you must research your industry and positions to see what is priority, your experience, education or both. If you do not hold either or meet the credentials you have to measure your job search success to determine if these credentials are holding you back and what can you do with your existing credentials, do you have to come in entry level? That’s an option to consider or this is where your relevancy of courses take can come into consideration.
Make sure your resume is focused on the industry/profession you want to work in. If you can do that job too and want to be considered you must update your resume to display that.
Your resume will tell you story….in telling your story you highlight your strengths in resume development. The research you conducted in development of your resume in addition to your behavioral assessment allows you to know the “why you are the best candidate” Use your resume to close a conversation. After you meet someone, say, I’ll send you my resume and let me know your thoughts. I would love to work in your field. If you know anyone looking for my expertise, either forward my resume or send me their info”. Connection…..As you tell your story of “why”, you close with, the details are presented on my resume, may I send you a copy”?
