Need help with Blackboard? Blackboard and computer related troubleshooting tips can be found on the Blackboard Help
Desk page; (http://www.utoledo.edu/dl/helpdesk/hlp_index.html) if you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835
(866.UToledo, toll free) or email utdl@utoledo.edu.
    • review the BUAD 2000 syllabus thoroughly, noting any questions or clarification needing addressed—students
are responsible for all information included in the syllabus. Once reviewed, students should accept the Course
       Contract in the Survey Folder.
    • use email through the BUAD 2000 Home Page for all electronic communication related to this class. All
electronic communication must occur through the Blackboard course environment. Other communication can be
managed through Office Hours visits (see page 1) or by telephone. The “Subject” line of all email
communication must begin with the student’s BUAD 2000 section number, followed by the nature of the
message. Your section number may be found on page 1 of the syllabus, at the top of the page. Students whose
messages do not comply with the required format may not be read. For example:

    • open the BUAD 2000 homepage daily in the event announcements are posted in the Discussion Board Folder or
on the homepage—students are accountable for all information posted!
    • attend all classes—in the event a student must miss class, the instructor must be notified as soon as possible, as
she retains the right to grant excused absences (students may always attend another section to make up for the
        missed class)
    • arrive on time for all class sessions and take care not to create disturbances if they are late

                                                               3
“Developing Life-Long Leaders for the World of Business”
• sign their own name to the Sign-in Sheet to ensure credit for attendance (this includes students attending a
section other than their own for make-up purposes)
    • demonstrate respect to the instructor and their classmates by refraining from social discussions in class
    • silence cell phones and discontinue use of any other means of technology during class—the only acceptable use
of technology would be a laptop—days when laptops are required will be noted in the course schedule (see
page 9 for details on wireless connectivity)
    • come to class having read the assigned readings
    • participate actively in classroom dialog and activities
    • complete and turn in all assignments on the specified due date in the specified form (electronic or hard copy)
    • submit all assignments using Microsoft Word; assignments loaded in a format other than Microsoft Word are
difficult to open and cause unnecessary delays in reading and assessing students’ work. This is a critical!
    • accept responsibility for obtaining missed notes or assignments, and subsequently, completing all assignments—
ask your peers or the instructor for assistance
    • engage in peer dialog and review of assignments in- and out-of-class as required
    • adhere to the College of Business Administration’s Code of Academic Conduct
As a student taking coursework in the College, you have an obligation to maintain the highest ethical conduct.
This involves avoiding acts of academic dishonesty. The reason for requiring the highest standards of ethical
conduct is to ensure fairness, honesty and integrity in the evaluation of student performance. Evaluation of
student performance should not be invalidated by students intending or attempting to misrepresent the skill,
achievement or ability of either themselves or others.

To achieve this purpose, the College has enacted a Code of Student Academic Conduct. This Code sets forth
specific types of academic misconduct which will not be tolerated. If there is any evidence of any of these types
of academic misconduct in this course, charges will be filed against the student or students involved. Along with
the Code, the College has also enacted a Student Academic Grievance Procedure. The purpose of this grievance
procedure is to provide the exclusive method by which a student can file a grievance if s/he believes that the
charge of academic misconduct is false or to grieve a final course grade which s/he believes has been unfairly or
        erroneously assigned.

The Code of Student Academic Conduct, the Student Academic Grievance Procedure, and the Student Grievance
Form can be reviewed on the College of Business Administration website.

The Instructor will:
    • arrive for class on time, prepared to share her knowledge in ways that accommodate the needs of the students
(Note: in the event class must be cancelled due to an emergency, every effort will be made to notify students in
        advance of the class meeting)
    • honor her office hours and meet with students individually as necessary
    • apply fair and consistent grading for all student assignments, returning them in a timely fashion
    • help identify resources needed to complete assignments or career-related endeavors
    • do whatever she can to make sure this is a successful experience for all participants
    • amend, adjust or deviate from the syllabus as necessary.

COURSE/ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS
    • Assignments are due according to the course schedule, although, the instructor may be able accept early
assignments if desired. All assignment requirements will be posted in the Assignments/Activities Folder on
the BUAD 2000 homepage as soon as requirements are finalized. If you are experiencing difficulty with any
aspect of Blackboard, troubleshooting tips can be found on the Blackboard Help Desk (http://www.utoledo.edu/
dl/helpdesk/hlp_index.html) page; if you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835 (866.UToledo, toll free) or
email utdl@utoledo.edu. The instructor can respond to assignment content questions, not technical questions
        regarding Blackboard access.

                                                               4
“Developing Life-Long Leaders for the World of Business”
• Late work is not accepted. In the event a student believes an assignment will not be completed on time,
communication must occur with the instructor prior to the due date. If the instructor deems the student’s
rationale for late work acceptable, the assignment may be submitted by the time designated by the instructor to
the appropriate location (depending on the assignment requirements)
            • the location determined by the instructor in the BUAD 2000 course environment in Blackboard
            • the Optimal Resume Review Center
            • the instructor’s mailbox in the Management Department Office, ST 2007
    • Students will work individually and in groups or Career Clusters to achieve the desired objectives and to
complete assignments. Participants will engage in active classroom and out-of-classroom experiences to
        complete assignments.
    • Unless otherwise noted, all work must be submitted using Microsoft Word, following the specifications noted on
the assignment requirements. Once graded, assignments should be three-hole punched so they are easily
added to the Career Development Portfolio if students choose to organize their materials this way.

CAREER CLUSTERS
Students will be assigned career clusters based on tentative career direction. These groups are designed to facilitate in-
and out-of-class conversation among peers about career related issues, and to share resources and ideas for researching
and writing about career information. Students will also engage in significant peer review of writing in their career
clusters.

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS (AT A GLANCE)
Full descriptions of all assignment requirements will be available to students in the BUAD 2000 Homepage,
Assignments/Activities folder, Blackboard. (Any login or access issues must be addressed through The University of Toledo
Distance and eLearning Help Desk page. If you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835 (866.UToledo, toll free) or email
utdl@utoledo.edu.

BUAD 2000 Course Contract Acceptance (Due in Blackboard Survey Folder by 5 p.m., 3/27/09)
To ensure students understand the syllabus and course expectations, acceptance of a contract is required to make certain all
class participants are accountable for the expectations outlined in the syllabus, discussed in class, and reiterated in the
contract (Survey Folder).

Data Sheet Survey 1 and 2-5 points each (Due in Blackboard Survey Folder by 5 p.m., 3/27/09 and 5/1/09 respectively)
Students are asked to assess their perceived readiness to explore majors and careers. Quality points are not awarded
for these tasks—when completed, students receive the full 5 points for each. Completion of Data Sheet Surveys 1 and 2
help College faculty determine if they are making progress on the desired competencies necessary for graduation. See
page 7 of the syllabus.

Online Career-assessment/Reflection-20 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m., 3/27/09)
Students will take one of two free online career-assessments, print their results and compose a brief reflection to be
used during the second class session. The completed, typed Microsoft Word reflection will be placed in the Blackboard
Drop Box. No handwritten reflections will be accepted.

In-class Reflections-3@20 points each=60 points (To be completed in class, and placed in the Blackboard Assignment
Drop Box by 5 p.m., 3/27/09)
Students will compose three in-class reflections focusing on interests/skills, values/personal qualities and a summary of
their perceptions about their career profile. The completed, typed Microsoft Word reflections will be placed in the
Blackboard Drop Box. No handwritten reflections will be accepted. Use of a laptop is strongly encouraged during this
class.

VAULT Reflection-15 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m., 4/10/08)

                                                               5
“Developing Life-Long Leaders for the World of Business”
Students will select an article of interest to read from the Career Advice tab on VAULT. Upon reading the article (drawn
from the Industry Advice, Work/Life or Job Search sections) a brief reflection will be composed, copied, and pasted into
the Assignment Drop Box in Blackboard.

Information Interview-50 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m., 4/24/09)
Some of the most valuable information job seekers can gather about the world of work comes from the people who are
working in their desired field. Career information is readily available on the web and in hard copy; however, the best
career-related information comes from practitioners. Students will conduct an Information Interview with someone in a
position they are considering. A brief reflection will be submitted following the interview.

Major/Career Exploration Project-35 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m., 5/1/09)
Students will combine their knowledge of self, College of Business Administration majors and potential careers in a
paper focusing on one potential career. Students will access resources via informational interviews, print, web and
personal resources to produce the finished project.

Resume-25 points (Due the last day of class (Monday (012/022) 4/27, Tuesday (032/042) 4/28, or Wednesday
(052/062) 4/29—download and print from Optimal Resume and bring to class)
This summary of your skills and qualifications for employment is a living document that will change continually. We will
spend time in- and out-of-class working on this all important job search tool. Resumes will be critiqued in-class on the
last day of class.

ATTENDANCE-35 POINTS
This class will be highly interactive. Therefore, all participants will need to come prepared to discuss topics and their
individual career development. We will all learn through the experiences of one another; thus, extensive participation is
expected. Absences will be considered unexcused unless discussed with the instructor prior to class. The instructor will
adhere to The University of Toledo missed class policy available at
http://www.utoledo.edu/facsenate/missed_class_policy.html.

PROFESSIONALISM POINTS—AT THE INSTRUCTOR’S DISCRETION
While it is the instructor’s responsibility to attempt to increase your knowledge and provide you with strategies for
enhancing your career success, it is your responsibility to practice professionalism in this class. Consider this a training
ground for your future. Attend class, arrive on time, participate, demonstrate conscientiousness, respect, and a solid
work ethic, and submit written documents that are free of typographical and mechanical errors. Professionalism does
not begin when you graduate and accept a full time position. The impressions you create now will follow you
throughout your experience at The University of Toledo, in the College of Business Administration and in other student
or professional circles. Discretionary bonus points may be added due to exceptional performance and commitment to
professionalism.

throughout the course and posted in the Extra Credit Folder on the BUAD 2000 Homepage on Blackboard. Written extra
credit will be accepted until 5 p.m., 5/1/09 in the Blackboard Survey Folder, Extra Credit File. Currently, two extra
credit options are offered:

Assignment requirements will be available in the Assignments/Activities Folder, BUAD 2000 Homepage in Blackboard. You are responsible for following the

  • 3. DESCRIPTION This one-hour course will assist students with self-assessment, exploring career options and developing a resume. Skills in communicating, listening, organizing and supervising are some of the areas required for long-term career success that are covered. (Open to Business students only. Graded A-C/No credit.) Prerequisite: BUAD 1000, business major and sophomore status. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Explore personal qualities, interests, skills and values and how these relate to majors and career choices • Identify the connection of College of Business Administration academic majors to career options • Analyze the components of a major and career to determine fit with identified career interests • Utilize print, personal and computer-based occupational resources to aid in major and career search • Effectively market experience and skills to potential employers • Create an action plan or strategy integrating self-assessment, research and career alternatives COURSE EXPECTATIONS Students will: • Review the BUAD 2000 Homepage to familiarize themselves with the areas/resources to be used throughout the course. The homepage will also be used for general information relevant to class. Areas you will access include: • Email-where all electronic communication will occur between you, the instructor and your classmates • Resources and Help-where the syllabus, useful career/job search resources may be found • Survey Folder-location for Data Sheet Surveys 1 and 2, and other assignments as necessary • Assignments/Activities-requirements for all assignments will be accessed from this folder • Extra Credit Options-requirements will be posted as available • Discussion Board- Announcements and inquiries about the course and assignments (open daily) Need help with Blackboard? Blackboard and computer related troubleshooting tips can be found on the Blackboard Help Desk page; (http://www.utoledo.edu/dl/helpdesk/hlp_index.html) if you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835 (866.UToledo, toll free) or email utdl@utoledo.edu. • review the BUAD 2000 syllabus thoroughly, noting any questions or clarification needing addressed—students are responsible for all information included in the syllabus. Once reviewed, students should accept the Course Contract in the Survey Folder. • use email through the BUAD 2000 Home Page for all electronic communication related to this class. All electronic communication must occur through the Blackboard course environment. Other communication can be managed through Office Hours visits (see page 1) or by telephone. The “Subject” line of all email communication must begin with the student’s BUAD 2000 section number, followed by the nature of the message. Your section number may be found on page 1 of the syllabus, at the top of the page. Students whose messages do not comply with the required format may not be read. For example: • open the BUAD 2000 homepage daily in the event announcements are posted in the Discussion Board Folder or on the homepage—students are accountable for all information posted! • attend all classes—in the event a student must miss class, the instructor must be notified as soon as possible, as she retains the right to grant excused absences (students may always attend another section to make up for the missed class) • arrive on time for all class sessions and take care not to create disturbances if they are late 3 “Developing Life-Long Leaders for the World of Business”
  • 4. sign their own name to the Sign-in Sheet to ensure credit for attendance (this includes students attending a section other than their own for make-up purposes) • demonstrate respect to the instructor and their classmates by refraining from social discussions in class • silence cell phones and discontinue use of any other means of technology during class—the only acceptable use of technology would be a laptop—days when laptops are required will be noted in the course schedule (see page 9 for details on wireless connectivity) • come to class having read the assigned readings • participate actively in classroom dialog and activities • complete and turn in all assignments on the specified due date in the specified form (electronic or hard copy) • submit all assignments using Microsoft Word; assignments loaded in a format other than Microsoft Word are difficult to open and cause unnecessary delays in reading and assessing students’ work. This is a critical! • accept responsibility for obtaining missed notes or assignments, and subsequently, completing all assignments— ask your peers or the instructor for assistance • engage in peer dialog and review of assignments in- and out-of-class as required • adhere to the College of Business Administration’s Code of Academic Conduct As a student taking coursework in the College, you have an obligation to maintain the highest ethical conduct. This involves avoiding acts of academic dishonesty. The reason for requiring the highest standards of ethical conduct is to ensure fairness, honesty and integrity in the evaluation of student performance. Evaluation of student performance should not be invalidated by students intending or attempting to misrepresent the skill, achievement or ability of either themselves or others. To achieve this purpose, the College has enacted a Code of Student Academic Conduct. This Code sets forth specific types of academic misconduct which will not be tolerated. If there is any evidence of any of these types of academic misconduct in this course, charges will be filed against the student or students involved. Along with the Code, the College has also enacted a Student Academic Grievance Procedure. The purpose of this grievance procedure is to provide the exclusive method by which a student can file a grievance if s/he believes that the charge of academic misconduct is false or to grieve a final course grade which s/he believes has been unfairly or erroneously assigned. The Code of Student Academic Conduct, the Student Academic Grievance Procedure, and the Student Grievance Form can be reviewed on the College of Business Administration website. The Instructor will: • arrive for class on time, prepared to share her knowledge in ways that accommodate the needs of the students (Note: in the event class must be cancelled due to an emergency, every effort will be made to notify students in advance of the class meeting) • honor her office hours and meet with students individually as necessary • apply fair and consistent grading for all student assignments, returning them in a timely fashion • help identify resources needed to complete assignments or career-related endeavors • do whatever she can to make sure this is a successful experience for all participants • amend, adjust or deviate from the syllabus as necessary. COURSE/ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS • Assignments are due according to the course schedule, although, the instructor may be able accept early assignments if desired. All assignment requirements will be posted in the Assignments/Activities Folder on the BUAD 2000 homepage as soon as requirements are finalized. If you are experiencing difficulty with any aspect of Blackboard, troubleshooting tips can be found on the Blackboard Help Desk (http://www.utoledo.edu/ dl/helpdesk/hlp_index.html) page; if you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835 (866.UToledo, toll free) or email utdl@utoledo.edu. The instructor can respond to assignment content questions, not technical questions regarding Blackboard access. 4 “Developing Life-Long Leaders for the World of Business”
  • 5. Late work is not accepted. In the event a student believes an assignment will not be completed on time, communication must occur with the instructor prior to the due date. If the instructor deems the student’s rationale for late work acceptable, the assignment may be submitted by the time designated by the instructor to the appropriate location (depending on the assignment requirements) • the location determined by the instructor in the BUAD 2000 course environment in Blackboard • the Optimal Resume Review Center • the instructor’s mailbox in the Management Department Office, ST 2007 • Students will work individually and in groups or Career Clusters to achieve the desired objectives and to complete assignments. Participants will engage in active classroom and out-of-classroom experiences to complete assignments. • Unless otherwise noted, all work must be submitted using Microsoft Word, following the specifications noted on the assignment requirements. Once graded, assignments should be three-hole punched so they are easily added to the Career Development Portfolio if students choose to organize their materials this way. CAREER CLUSTERS Students will be assigned career clusters based on tentative career direction. These groups are designed to facilitate in- and out-of-class conversation among peers about career related issues, and to share resources and ideas for researching and writing about career information. Students will also engage in significant peer review of writing in their career clusters. ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS (AT A GLANCE) Full descriptions of all assignment requirements will be available to students in the BUAD 2000 Homepage, Assignments/Activities folder, Blackboard. (Any login or access issues must be addressed through The University of Toledo Distance and eLearning Help Desk page. If you need further assistance, call 419.530.8835 (866.UToledo, toll free) or email utdl@utoledo.edu. BUAD 2000 Course Contract Acceptance (Due in Blackboard Survey Folder by 5 p.m., 3/27/09) To ensure students understand the syllabus and course expectations, acceptance of a contract is required to make certain all class participants are accountable for the expectations outlined in the syllabus, discussed in class, and reiterated in the contract (Survey Folder). Data Sheet Survey 1 and 2-5 points each (Due in Blackboard Survey Folder by 5 p.m., 3/27/09 and 5/1/09 respectively) Students are asked to assess their perceived readiness to explore majors and careers. Quality points are not awarded for these tasks—when completed, students receive the full 5 points for each. Completion of Data Sheet Surveys 1 and 2 help College faculty determine if they are making progress on the desired competencies necessary for graduation. See page 7 of the syllabus. Online Career-assessment/Reflection-20 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m., 3/27/09) Students will take one of two free online career-assessments, print their results and compose a brief reflection to be used during the second class session. Information Interview-50 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m., 4/24/09) Some of the most valuable information job seekers can gather about the world of work comes from the people who are working in their desired field. Career information is readily available on the web and in hard copy; however, the best career-related information comes from practitioners. Students will conduct an Information Interview with someone in a position they are considering. A brief reflection will be submitted following the interview. Major/Career Exploration Project-35 points (Due in Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 5 p.m., 5/1/09) Students will combine their knowledge of self, College of Business Administration majors and potential careers in a paper focusing on one potential career. Students will access resources via informational interviews, print, web and personal resources to produce the finished project. We will spend time in- and out-of-class working on this all important job search tool. Resumes will be critiqued in-class on the last day of class. ATTENDANCE-35 POINTS This class will be highly interactive. Therefore, all participants will need to come prepared to discuss topics and their individual career development. We will all learn through the experiences of one another; thus, extensive participation is expected. Absences will be considered unexcused unless discussed with the instructor prior to class. The instructor will adhere to The University of Toledo missed class policy available at http://www.utoledo.edu/facsenate/missed_class_policy.html. PROFESSIONALISM POINTS—AT THE INSTRUCTOR’S DISCRETION While it is the instructor’s responsibility to attempt to increase your knowledge and provide you with strategies for enhancing your career success, it is your responsibility to practice professionalism in this class. Consider this a training ground for your future. Attend class, arrive on time, participate, demonstrate conscientiousness, respect, and a solid work ethic, and submit written documents that are free of typographical and mechanical errors. Professionalism does not begin when you graduate and accept a full time position. The impressions you create now will follow you throughout your experience at The University of Toledo, in the College of Business Administration and in other student or professional circles. Discretionary bonus points may be added due to exceptional performance and commitment to professionalism.
