LinkedIn is the #1 professional online
platform for career growth, networking and
professional reputation management.
Currently 450M members on LI
93% of recruiters tap into LinkedIn to find
qualified candidates
42% of recruiters have reconsidered a candidate
viewed in a social profile, leading to both
positive and negative re-assessments
Four in ten job seekers found their job through
personal connections
There is an endless black hole of online job listings
And hiring managers are faced with a mounting avalanche of resumesThere is an endless black hole of online job listings
And hiring managers are faced with mounting
stacks of resumes
Veterans have a unique skill set & challenges
Challenges;
 Translating military skills to
civilian jobs
 Replacing military jargon with
keyword used by recruiters &
hiring managers
 Veterans are often stereotyped in
the professional world as being
straight to the point or cut & dry
vs. flexible
My goal…
practical steps to leveraging LinkedIn
You Need a Powerful Profile
Why is a powerful profile important?
 Generally ranks in the top Google searches for your name
 Brings you credibility
 Shows you as an expert in your field
 Recruiters can find you based on your skills & expertise
How are you managing your personal &
professional brand?
TIP: Set up a “Google Alert”
LinkedIn is more than an online
resume – and not
“one and done”
MISTAKE #1
Begin with a professional photo
If you are not active duty, than wear
civilian clothes
Dress for the job you want!
Edit your public profile
Create a custom URL for your name
 Use this in your email signature
 Add to your resume
Leverage Your Headline:
Explain what it is you do
show your passion and value combined with
key words!
Give Prospects a Reason to Connect With You
 Have a compelling headline that grabs their attention and
makes prospects want to click on your profile
 Combine an attention-grabbing statement with one or two
keywords
First job out of military: Keep it generic and focus on
the outcome you desire
Product Manager | MBA |
Engineer | Passionate about Big
Data, Cloud and Mobile
His passions are about what
he “wants” to do
Example
MISTAKE #2 – not knowing key words
Recruiters use “Applicant Tracking Systems” ATS
To sort candidates
Leverage your skills & expertise
with the best key words
Know the key words recruiters use
You can learn this by
reading job ads carefully
Example: Find key words in job listings
Key word in job
descriptions:
Marketing,
Advertising.
Communications.
P & L
Management,
Analytical
Example:
Key Words - Be consistent!
Place your most important search or keywords
strategically throughout your profile.
Professional Headline
Summary section
Title Fields – inclu. Current & past work experience
Skills & Expertise
Recommendations
Mistake #3 – translating military skills
Translate your resume out of military jargon and into
language that shows your transferrable skills.
Working in the S-3 shop
of a deployed battalion
Created a unified plan of action, ensured coordination
between cross-functional teams, and provided
feedback to improve the process.

As a logistics officer in Afghanistan, my mission was to
resupply troops across a wide area. I led a training program of
126 soldiers, process improvement studies, and convoy and
supply optimization planning. My difficult work across two
months saved $10 million, 2,450 man hours and reduced
dangerous convoys totalling 1,000 miles. I was recognized with
a military award for my actions.

you are looking for then ask for potential referrals at a meeting.
Example:
Subject: Seeking your advice on my next career move
You’ve always been supportive of me. So I wanted to reach out and let you know
that I’m making a career/job change. I’m transforming my role from sales into
marketing and I’m really excited to make the move!
Would you have time in the next week
