• One page, or at most 2 pages long. 
• Language is grammatically correct. 
• Spelling has been checked. 
• Formal Style Must always be 100% truthful. 
• Contains no inappropriate personal information. 
• Produced on a computer. 
• Data presented in chronological order
BASIC CHECKLIST 
• Create an effective layout 
• Try to interest your reader visually 
• A clean, professional format with a little style 
Extra white space makes it easy to read – set margins 
 Limit font to two choices 
 Easy to read font 12 or 14 pt. 
 Categorize information
AND FINALLY 
• Have at least two friends proof read and 
critique 
• Run a spell check on your computer before 
anyone sees your resume. 
• Print it and proof read again

  • 3. WHY SHOULD IT BE GOOD? •Your goal is to get an interview •A resume is a window •It’s a brochure about you •The 8 second test •Brevity and readability
  • 4. THE RESUME OF A “RESUME” Heading Objective References Education Activities Related Skills Experience
  • 5. HEADING • Name • Address • Telephone / Cell Phone Number • E-mail address
  • 6. DO’S & DON'T DO DON’T
  • 7. OBJECTIVE  One or two sentences  Type of position (part time, full time, summer internship) What position would you like to find?  Emphasize how you will use your skills, not what you want to gain
  • 8. Educational Qualification • Your most recent educational information is listed first. • Include your degree (B.Sc., B.A., M.B.A etc.), major, institution attended, minor/concentration. • Add your grade point average or Percentage. • Mention academic honors.
  • 9. SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS • What makes you the best person for the job? • List the top four or five skills & qualifications here. • Include skills mentioned in the job posting if applicable.
  • 10. RELATED SKILLS • Hard Skills: Can be taught or certified in.  Software programs and proficiency (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, FrontPage, AutoCad…)  Programming languages (include Visual Basic, HTML, PHP, …)  Abilities (based on experience)  Languages and language ability • Soft Skills: personal attributes – E.g.   • 14. REFERENCES • Provides employer with background information • Should be on separate sheet of matching paper • 3-4 references are enough • Given upon request – usually at interview
  • 15. TYPES OF REFERENCES • Work – most recent job (supervisor or manager) • Academic – professor or teacher who knows if you are capable • Personal/Character – adult who is able to vouch for your good character and desirable personality traits
  • 16. Characteristics Of A Successful Resume • Focuses on skills. Uses action words to define the responsibilities of your job-related experience. • Easy to read and understand. • Visually powerful and free of gimmicks. • One page, or at most 2 pages long. • Language is grammatically correct. • Spelling has been checked. • Formal Style Must always be 100% truthful. • Contains no inappropriate personal information. • Produced on a computer. • Data presented in chronological order
  • 17. BASIC CHECKLIST • Create an effective layout • Try to interest your reader visually • A clean, professional format with a little style Extra white space makes it easy to read – set margins  Limit font to two choices  Easy to read font 12 or 14 pt.  Categorize information
  • 18. AND FINALLY • Have at least two friends proof read and critique • Run a spell check on your computer before anyone sees your resume. • Print it and proof read again THANK YOU
