Conservation and Climate Change

Over 120 long-term research sites have already been entered into the project's database from 34 US states, 4 Canadian provinces, and 9 Mexican states.
Early outcomes of topsoil transfer in Banksia woodland restoration in Western...
The aim of this project is to restore Banksia Woodlands by optimizing germination and survival of native species from the soil seed bank contained within transferred topsoil. The project is a part of an offset program associated with the development of the Jandakot Airport 25 km south of Perth city. In the first year, key research questions are focussed on enhancing germination by varying depth of returned topsoil, ripping, fencing, weed control and experimental additions of smoke. Subsequent work will examine the survival and persistence of germinants including treatments such as provision of artifical shade. Assessing the efficacy of a spectrum of novel restoration technologies will provide new insights for environmental management of endangered plant communities.

Two field experiments are measuring soil carbon and nitrogen pools, trace gas fluxes, and leaching losses in different crop rotations. Preliminary energy analysis found cumulative input to output ratios of 10 for an extensive organic system and 48 for a medium-scale organic system, with greenhouse heating and refrigeration being large energy inputs for the latter. This document summarizes a study that examined the relationship between farmers having a conservation plan from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and their adoption of conservation practices. The study analyzed survey data from Iowa farmers and found that having an NRCS conservation plan was a significant predictor of adoption for two practices: no-till farming and terraces. However, the most consistent predictor of practice adoption was the number of times a farmer visited a USDA field office for conservation purposes. The results suggest future research should examine conservation plans and farmer interactions with conservation professionals in more detail.
Partnerships to support conservation with organic producers
This document discusses partnerships between Oregon Tilth and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to support organic producers. The number of organic farms and consumer demand for organic products has increased, leading to more interaction between organic producers and agricultural agencies. Oregon Tilth and NRCS established a national partnership in 2010 to share the costs of an organic conservation specialist position. This partnership provides trainings, webinars, and technical resources to NRCS on organic agriculture and helps NRCS better serve organic farmers through practices that support the national organic standards. There are opportunities to better translate organic regulations into conservation language and practices to bridge NRCS support and organic certification requirements.

Kate Boicourt has over 10 years of experience managing collaborative restoration projects between government, academic, and non-profit partners in the New York City metropolitan region. She coordinates multi-stakeholder work groups to implement habitat restoration goals and tracks progress towards regional targets. Boicourt also develops research initiatives by assembling advisory teams and managing projects from concept to completion. She holds an MESc from Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and has authored or co-authored several publications on coastal restoration and climate change adaptation.

Daniele Lantagne has over 20 years of experience in environmental engineering, with a focus on household water treatment in developing countries. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Tufts University, where she teaches and conducts research related to global public health engineering. Prior to her current role, she held positions at the CDC, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, MIT, and engineering consulting firms, working on projects in over 40 countries related to water treatment, sanitation, and hygiene. She has a PhD from LSHTM and MS and BS from MIT, and has advised over a dozen graduate students.

This document summarizes a study that examined the relationship between farmers having a conservation plan from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and their adoption of conservation practices. The study analyzed survey data from Iowa farmers and found that having an NRCS conservation plan was a significant predictor of adoption for two practices: no-till farming and terraces. However, the most consistent predictor of practice adoption was the number of times a farmer visited a USDA field office for conservation purposes.
