The respiratory system brings air into the body through the nose, which filters dust. The windpipe branches into air tubes that lead to the lungs. In the lungs, the air tubes branch into smaller tubes called air sacs where gas exchange occurs. During breathing, oxygen from the inhaled air enters the bloodstream in the lungs while carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the exhaled air. The respiratory system carries out functions like sighing, yawning, coughing, sneezing, laughing, and crying through movements of the diaphragm and other muscles.
