University Grants
Commission (UGC)
 The University Grants Commission (UGC)
of India is a statutory body set up by the
Indian Union government in 1956, and is
charged with coordination, determination
and maintenance of standards of higher
education.

streams through its Country wide classroom
teachings and a four-year old 24 hours
educational channel 'Vyas'.
 The University Grants Commission has
recently launched an 'e-scripting' course in
television for all those students who want to
make a career in broadcast media. The course
is being run by its Consortium of Educational
Communication, an Inter University Centre of
the UGC on electronic media.
INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY
( IGNOU)
 The Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU) was established by an Act of
Parliament in September, 1985, with a dual
purpose - as a National Open University and
as an apex body for the introduction and
promotion of the open university and distance
education systems in the educational pattern
of the country and for the coordination and
determination of standards in such systems.
The latter function is similar to the statutory
responsibility assigned to the University
Grants Commission (UGC) in respect of the
entire system of higher education.
FUNCTIONS
1. Promotion of the open university and
distance education systems
2. Coordination and determination of standards
of teaching, evaluation and research in such
systems
3. Allocation and disbursal of grants to various
distance education institutions in the country
for the purpose of performing the above
functions.

NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL STANDARDS (NOC)
 The national occupational standards for supporting
teaching and learning (NOS for STL) describe what
support staff need to do, know and understand in
their roles.
 They support the day-to-day activities of school
leaders and support staff, and are aligned with
national expectations and qualifications. Information
on how the NOS for STL units link with the
Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) units is
available in the introduction download for ‘Support
staff essential training materials’.
 Although the NOS for STL apply across the UK, guidance
in these documents only applies to England.
 The NOS booklet provides further information on how
the NOS were developed and how they can be used. The
full suite of units can be downloaded from this page and
are split into units according to the corresponding
National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level.

• Realizing the potential and power of television to
act as means of Educational Knowledge
dissemination, UGC started the Countrywide
Classroom Programmes in the year 1984. For
production of educational programmes, initially
Media Centres were set up at 6 Universities.
Subsequently CEC was setup in 1993 as a nodal
agency to coordinate, guide & facilitate such
educational programme production through its
Media Centres. Today 22 Media Centres now
known as Educational Multimedia Research
Centres (EMRCs) are working towards achieving
this goal under the umbrella of CEC
